  • It works better than expected for picking up leaves
It works better than expected for picking up leaves. Have to empty the 2 bags every minute - literally - because of 3 years of non-picked up leaves. But the blade basically shreds the leaves and it makes excellent compost material. I/2 acre cleared, composted in 2 hours. Beautiful and totally worth the price which I still think is BLOODY TOO MUCH. Couple of problems: the bottom chute, where it attaches to the mower is not all that good. Big rubber band holds it in place. but during operation it jumps out and grass goes everywhere. Fixed it by drilling a 4mm hole through the plastic and into the top of the blade cover, then put a 4.5 mm self tapping pan head screw to hold it in place. Works fine now. Also the pipe in the middle sometimes pops out - fixed this with the supplied plastic screw thingie. Note I had 2 bolts and 1 nut left over after it was all done, but I don't think those parts relate to my problem. Ease of assembly - clear enough. If you can put together an IKEA thingie then this will be fine for you. DO IT. BUY IT. ... show more

  • Worth the expense
I was worried that this unit would not fit my Toro 38" mower but had no problems installing it. It fit perfectly and is actually well designed and very well made. All steel parts are heavy guage steel and are powder coated. Fasteners are all anodized and 100% nylon lock nuts are used. Packaging is well designed and the assembly instructions are clear and easy to follow. The design is very clever in that the whole unit can lift off the tractor by removing one cotter pin and one rubber strap end. It works great but the bags fill up pretty fast if your grass is long. ... show more

  • A Great Bagger after an initial small problem.
This bagger works great when it is connected and fits properly. I have two separate homes and an mtd riding mower at each location. I talked with MTD on 2 different occasions with my Model and Serial number on the rider I was initially buying this for. I was told this is the proper one for that rider. Unfortunately it did not fit with the supplied parts and the directions were not compatible with that rider. I would have given a very low review, but even thought this was very inconvenient and time consuming, I was able to get on the phone with a technician and they were able to figure out the additional brackets that I needed for that rider and sent them to me free of charge. While waiting for the brackets I installed this on my other rider and it was very easy to install and fit perfectly and has worked flawlessly so far. I have the brackets they have sent me and I have decided to eventually buy a second one for the other rider. This one has worked so well I do not want to remove it now. Something to note for potential buyers***Check with MTD or your local Dealer and inquire if your rider has the proper cutting blades**** baggers do need to be used in addition with what they call "Lift Blades" and there are some riders that come stock with regular cutting blades and they will not lift and throw the cut grass as efficiently into the shoot. Fortunately both of my models have Lift Blades stock. I have used this bagger now multiple times and I am more than pleased with the results. Make sure after each mowing to clean out the large plastic screen that is attached inside the big lid to ensure proper flow. ... show more

  • Flimsy chute where it meets the mower deck.
The discharge chute lasted two mowings. I hit a tree root and the bounce made the chute dislodge and it went into the blade and chewed it up. The unit overall is good, except for the thin plastic chute. It needs to at least doubly thick where it meets the mower deck. Now I have to see if I can fabricate or salvage the piece as the replacement piece is around $132.00. No way. It’s now 4 months later and no warrantied chute replacement. They said the serial number on the kit I bought doesn’t exist. I’m thinks that next season I’ll upgrade to a non-MTD mower. It will be worth the money upfront. ... show more

  • Despite what MTD says, it does not fit older mowers without modding
I have a 1996 MTD mower. Having trouble finding a grass collector for it, I contacted MTD on the subject giving them both the model (136O675G336) and serial numbers off of the mower. I was told that the model OEM-190-180A replaced the original model of 190-163, so I ordered it. I saw in the description where it says fits MTD 38" and 42" lawn tractors, 2002 and after, but figured MTD built the thing so they know what they were talking about. It arrived when promised and in basically good condition with no damage to the box and all parts intact. Installing it is when the issues began. There are 2 shoulder screws that are suppose to go on either side of the body under the seat. This was impossible on mine as the speed shift lever is right where the shoulder screw is suppose to go. I thought of drilling new holds for the shoulder screws but further examination showed this to be futile effort as their was no way to get around the shift leaver and furthermore the metal is pretty thin. After studying the issue for awhile, I decided to use the brackets that are for the 700 series. I bolted the brackets to the top four existing bolt holes on the back plate. Because two pieces of metal overlap at this corner, it is stronger than the aforementioned sides. Using this method, when the bracket sits flat on the hitch plate, the hooks pop off the shoulder screws due to the back plate being slanted. I got around this by slightly tilting up the bracket and using bolts through 2 existing holes in the bracket to hold it in place. This keeps the hooks of the bracket on the shoulder screws. The rest of it goes together fine until you get to connecting the discharge chute elbow to the mower deck. Because of the tilted bagger, the rubber strap is very hard to secure. I had to use some muscle and a screwdriver to slip it over the pin. Once I got it on though the bagger worked very well. I could have sent this back, but really wanted a grass collector and was doubtful I would find one that exactly fits my mower. I do not recommend this product to anyone with an older mower who is not mechanically inclined despite what MTD says. While it works just fine once installed, it took a bit of modifying to make it work. ***UPDATE*** I found a conversion kit (Service Kit 753-04374) that is used to upgrade an OEM-190-063 Grass Bagger to an OEM-190-180 FastAttach GrassBagger. I did not order the kit ($149.88 on Amazon) which I do not think would help me anyway, but did download the pdf instruction manual. In the manual is a list of the parts included in the kit and diagrams of their installation. Among the parts listed are 2 brackets (783-04137 and 783-04132) that attach to the slanted back plate of the mower. Studying the diagram, I concluded that using these brackets, I may be able to attach the shoulder screws to it enabling my bagger to sit properly on the mower. A further search on-line located the parts at mtdparts.com. The original part numbers have been superseded by parts 983-04137A and 983-04132A and cost $9.48 each. I have placed an order for the parts and will do an update on if they solve the problem. *** SUPPLEMENTAL UPDATE *** In short it works with the new brackets. I had to configure the hitch bracket and hitch support for the 700 model series mower. Once this was done, the bagger fits exactly like it is supposed to. I wish there were separate ratings for installation and functionality. I would give this bagger 5 stars for function because it worked perfectly once I got it installed properly. However I have to leave it at 3 stars due to the fact that it does not install properly out of the box even though MTD says it should. The solution I found, to me was something I think someone at MTD should have come up with already. I have notified MTD about this issue and how I resolved it and can only hope they include it in information to the customer should someone contact them about it. ... show more
