    • Wow, what a machine!
I call my Ariens Snow Thrower "The Beast", for a beast it is. Strong, sturdy, and able to be handled by me, a little ol' lady. It has changed my wintertime routine here in the Colorado mountains and offered much independence from being "snowbound" or having to rely on someone to plow my long driveway.     • Very good unit, with one caveat...
This is a great blower that is crafted in the USA. I believe the engine is a Subaru, but someone might correct me on that. Assembly isn't too bad if you just follow the instructions. Same goes for operation. Don't try to be a cowboy and go all commando without having read the owner's manual. There are multiple switches and shutoffs for the engine alone, and you need to make sure you know where the fuel shutoff, kill switch, and ignition switch are. (I used it for the first time today, but I had to tramp back into the house and try to figure out why the engine wouldn't start. Forgot to turn the gas valve on, but I couldn't see it with all that flat black paint. Operator error. Never assume anything, right?) This is a tough unit that should last most anyone for years. Ariens is basically the Cadillac of home-size snowblowers. But it does have one little bug I don't like: The low speed ratio wants to move the blower way, way too quickly. Even at the lowest speed setting possible, if you are trying to chew through 18-24 inch drifts you'll have to feather the drive control very, very slightly to reign it in or it simply feeds too much, too fast. You'll get a feel for that after the first few minutes if you are running it in heavy snow. I think down the road I'll eventually tear it down and try to replace whatever pulley/belt combo that drives that low speed setting with something more appropriate. I really wonder sometimes if the people who design things on their CAD systems ever take their creations out and actually use them in real world conditions. I see and hear about stuff like this all the time on new equipment. The little engine is great and no complaints whatsoever, although I've just started using it. Good knobby ATV style tires for traction, which is another huge plus. About the only way you could do better here would be to step up to a trac-style drive unit and they cost considerably more. My old blower wasn't that bad mechanically, but it had an awful traction problem that rendered it basically useless. Electric start plus reverse are a nice benefit, although nowadays it's definitely expected on a larger blower like this. The pull start cranks pretty easily if you want to use that instead, and it won't give you a heart attack to start it if you shut it off out in the middle of the yard. This unit costs more than a lot of the competition, but it's much heavier constructed than most. It's a tank, and with good tires that extra weight definitely helps in slippery snow. I'd say pull the trigger and get it if it's something you possibly can spend the extra money for. Definitely worth that extra money when the driveway is full of white stuff and you need to get it cleared out in a hurry. Does a good job throwing snow, if it starts. I bought this Ariens Deluxe 28 three years ago from another big box store. Which no longer carries Ariens. Carburetor has been changed twice. Once under warranty, once not. Arien claims it is because of 'bad gas.' Funny that my 18 year old snow blower, which sat for two years started right up with the same bad gas. Big snow storm coming, put new gas in the tank. Arien will not start. Junk. Save your money. ... show more

    • Save your serial number!
I much prefer my old no-name snow blower, the damned "auto steer" makes this want to take off across my lawn if I am clearing the driveway and the blower gets even an inch over onto the grass. BUT the reason for the strange headline: I found that to see some repair manuals I needed to get my model and serial numbers. I found online a picture of where they would be. I went out to the garage to read them and found they were printed on a stupid paper label that was falling off! If I had used the blower before looking, that label would have been long gone! Any reputable engine maker would stamp or cast those numbers into the engine, not put them on a fragile paper label! So find your numbers and record them somewhere in case you ever need them! ... show more

    • Solid, Reliable, snow eating monster
Bought a rural property 2 years ago, which included about 300 feet of uneven, rutted muddy gravel driveway. Against my intuition, was told yes, indeed you can use a snowblower on gravel. So relieved I bought this machine! Plenty of power and durability. It's actually enjoyable hitting that hard packed snowplow pile at the end of the driveway - you should hear that throaty motor hogging through it! I've hit rocks, sticks, bolts, and even bent an intake auger. Replace shear pins, bend intake back to some semblance of shape, and it's ready for more. The electric start is handy, especially since I kept it outside first two winters. Bought from a local dealer who noted best way to deal with modern gasoline issues is to simply shut off gas tank supply valve and let it burn off what's left in carb vs. turning off the ignition key. This way, even if gas gets a little tacky, it's not gumming up the carburetor. Never had starting issues at all following this method. Wanted to save money by purchasing a department store cheap-o for half the money, but refused, knowing what I'd be putting this machine through. Also, local dealer indicated he's the authorized service center for those off brands, but if you buy his brand direct from him, guess which machines get serviced first... Well worth the $ - easy to run, easy to maintain, well thought out, super-strong motor, upgraded/smoother control systems (lots of cables triggers and levers moving on a snowblower). Even the headlight is actually useful! Hands down, a get what you pay for situation. This is one of those that will deliver LONG after the half price competitors have landed in the dump.
