The patented AquaClear re-filtration system allows you to control the flow rate without compromising filtration efficiency. When the flow rate is reduced, up to 50% of the water within the filter chamber is processed multiple times.CycleGuard Multi-Stage Filtration System Provides optimal mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. A healthy aquarium requires "beneficial" bacteria. Invisible and harmless, beneficial bacteria are essential in the removal of toxic ammonia and nitrite. With cartridge filtration systems, when you throw away the cartridge, you throw away beneficial bacteria. It can take weeks for the bacteria to re-colonize, resulting in a stressful environment.Typical Filter Media Placement:BottomAquaClear Foam Insert, which does the following: 1. Helps with debris removal and provides optimal water distribution patterns, allowing subsequent filter media to perform at full efficiency. 2. Biological filtration, due to the porous structure of foam, providing surfaces for beneficial bacteria.MiddleAquaClear Activated Carbon Filter Inserts contain 100% premium research grade carbon. Premium research grade carbon provides large amounts of surface area for adsorption of undesirable impurities.TopAquaClear BioMax Filter Inserts contain BioMax ceramic rings. The surface of BioMax is made up of a complex pore system that allows bacteria to thrive.AquaClear Power FiltersPower Filter MaintenanceFor maximum filter operation and efficiency, regular cleaning of the filter and its parts is recommended every two weeks.Always unplug the Aquaclear Power Filter prior to cleaning.First you want to remove the cover, filter basket, and discard water remaining in the filter case. Thoroughly rinse collected debris from the case, impeller cover and impeller assembly using clear lukewarm water. Then intake "U" tube and extension tube can be cleaned with a filter stem brush to remove any build-up of deposits. When all parts have been cleaned and thoroughly rinsed, reassemble filter and replace any scheduled media. Install the filter once again back on the aquarium making sure that the filter is tipped slightly forward. Then fill the AquaClear filter box with aquarium water. Finally plug the filter into an electrical outlet and the AquaClear will self-prime and begin running in a few seconds.Media ReplacementAquaClear Foam Filter Insert: Replace Foam Filter Insert every two months. AquaClear Activated Carbon Filter Insert: Replace Activated Carbon Insert every month. AquaClear BioMax Filter Insert: Replace BioMax Insert every three months.Warranty The AquaClear Power Filters are guaranteed against defects in material or workmanship under normal aquarium usages and service for as long as you own the filter. • Works fine - Like all the Other Aquaclear Filters I run
Size: 10 to 30 Gallons - 30 Style: Fish Tank Filter
All my tanks have Aquaclear HOBs. Quiet, filters very well. Contrary to reports, I have seen them keep prime for 3+ hours and start up with no problem. BUT i do keep my water level at the black rim piece. Some parts are interchangeable, no need to buy replacement cartridges. I run sponge filters on the intake tube, this keeps fry from getting sucked in, add reduces the need to clean the internal filter media greatly. The next best thing to a canister. Tidals appear to be great also, but for the fry situation, I would be closing some pathways off with aquarium silicon, and they are more expensive, so that puts me in the Aquaclear camp. Sometimes the cover rattles - or maybe echos somehow - I place a rubberband holding the cover down and the noise is gone. These are also fairly easy to clean. I am always left with a sense of "that wasn't so bad'. The re-usable media is a big plus. ... show more

  • I own 4 of these - oldest is 14 years old and still working fine
Size: 40 to 70 Gallons - 70 Style: Fish Tank Filter
The old version of the AquaClear 70 was the 300 (new rating is for aquarium size, old rating was GPH). The one I purchased in 1998 is still working fine. I bought a second AquaClear 70 (as well as an AquaClear 50) filter in February 2012 - runs fine and you can't beat the price for these on Amazon. I just bought a fourth AquaClear in October 2012. They can be a little noisy - the splashing water is generally louder than the motor. If you keep your aquarium topped off, it tends to be quieter. The filtration system is excellent and is cheap to maintain. #1 - Rinse out the sponge every 2-4 weeks (bottom of filter). I've used the same one for years depending on the type of fish in the aquarium. They are very inexpensive if you change them out every couple of months. #2 - Change the carbon filter - this can vary depending on your aquarium's population (about once a month for me). $ Saving Tip: I don't purchase the replacement "pads" - I make my own using bulk carbon/ammonia blend (i.e., Marineland 50 oz. jug) and nylon hosiery (buy a box of "knee-high" stockings at your local dollar store and they will last you a very long time as you can cut and tie them off). #3 - The BioMax level - This stuff RARELY (if ever) needs changed if everything else is maintained properly (including regular water changes). I have a beautiful 72 gallon bow aquarium with Lake Malawi cichlids w/ a pair of AquaClear 70's and a power head w/ an AquaClear quick filter. My 60 gallon tetra aquarium uses an AquaClear 70 - just set up to keep tetras. My 36 gallon bow uses an AquaClear 50 and a power head with a Marineland sponge pre-filter and it will be the "winter home" for 7 goldfish that will come inside from their outdoor water garden (until I expand it to a depth that won't freeze in the northeastern Ohio winters). The water in each of these is crystal clear. Another tip: This filter ships with a new sponge, carbon pad, and BioMax. If you already have one of these filters up and running on an established aquarium and you want to start a new aquarium... Take the old sponge from your established tank and put it in the new aquarium's filter. You can jump start your beneficial media and establish your new aquarium sooner. Put the new sponge in the old aquarium's filter. Again, these are very INEXPENSIVE filters and function very WELL - they aren't silent (if you want silent, drop about $250 into a Fluval and install it on a PROFESSIONALLY drilled aquarium). I've read a couple of reviews that state the top doesn't fit on theirs (it should if the intake tube is seated correctly) and a review that states that it didn't fit an aquarium (I've custom fit these to my 72 bow by cutting a couple small shallow notches into the plastic top of the aquarium - very simple to do and it doesn't hurt the structural integrity of it). If you prime the reservoir (pour water into your empty filter) before turning them on they should start up fine for you. The only time I've had problems with them "self-priming" is after a power outage and the aquarium water is somewhat low. ... show more

  • AquaClear: nice and simple, good product
Size: 20 to 50 Gallons - 50 Style: Fish Tank Filter
Just received and set up the AquaClear 50. I’m impressed. We have a 29 gallon freshwater tank. I’ve always used MarineLand filters. Why? I have no idea. I just started with MarineLand when I set up my first tank and was familiar with its operation and cleaning. I had no idea there were superior products out there. My MarineLand Emperor 280 lasted a good 8-10 years and was a workhorse (n.b. when I make comparisons to the MarineLand filter below, I am talking about the old MarineLand Emperor, and *not* the MarineLand Penguin that they sell now. I have no idea the features/quality of the Penguin). During the last of countless cleanings of my MarineLand filter, one of the plastic pieces where the impeller meets the intake tube finally broke, prompting me to buy a new filter rather than attempt a fix. I figured I would just buy another MarineLand as I always had in the past. But I read the reviews of the MarineLand Penguin, and I saw too many comments about “too loud” and “cheap plastic” ….. so I shopped around for other brands and stumbled on the AquaClear. It’s more expensive than MarineLand, but it got great reviews, so I figured I’d try it. Initial setup was a piece of cake and took 5 minutes. Most noticeable things to me: 1. The mechanical parts and operation are much simpler than the MarineLand. Fewer plastic parts means fewer possible points of failure. 2. It has the same three-phase filtration, including a foam pad, a charcoal insert, and some kind of biomaterial pellets in a pouch. These are comparable to the mesh filter insert, charcoal insert, and “biowheel” of the MarineLand. 3. The water flow is great. It seems stronger than the MarineLand, and it’s infinitely adjustable (compared with the 4-position adjustment on the MarineLand). 4. It is QUIET, to the point of absolutely silent. Even when I try to listen, I can’t hear it running. My old MarineLand would oftentimes sound like gravel in a blender, and the MarineLand had an ejection tube with tiny holes in it that shot water at the biowheel to make it turn .... and those tiny holes would always get clogged, thus preventing the biowheel from spinning. The AquaClear more simply forces the water from the bottom of the filter, up through that white foam pad and black charcoal pouch and biomaterial and ejects it back into the tank at the top. 5. Although I haven't done a first cleaning of the AquaClear, it was immediately apparent to me that it will be infinitely easier to clean the MarineLand. All of the filter materials get lifted out of the unit in a tray. Once the tray is removed, the entire inside of the unit is visible and has fewer nooks and crannies where algae/gunk can accumulate. Thus easier to clean. As of Day 1 of operation, I’m quite happy with the AquaClear. Will see how it performs as the weeks and months and years (hopefully) tick off. One final note: The Q&A for the AquaClear mentioned that it’s not UL listed. It’s not. It instead has an ETL mark (whatever that is). For comparison, I checked my MarineLand filter. It’s also not UL listed. It also has the ETL mark. I never had any electrical issues with the MarineLand after nearly a decade of use, so I figure it’s a non-issue. ... show more
