    • Versatility in such a small package!
The Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 Card Reader is an interesting device in that it allows for a wide range of SD cards to be read, without taking up much space as opposed to a larger, wired SD Card Reader. "What does it do?" This small, unimposing device has two "sides": the side that plugs into a USB port of your choosing, and the side you insert an SD card into. Once plugged into your computer and equipped with an SD card, the device acts as an incredibly versatile USB drive, giving you the ability to format said SD card as well as read and write data on it as you would any other drive worth its salt. "What types of SD cards are supported?" According to the item Description, the following cards are supported: SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, RS-MMC, Micro SDXC, Micro SD and Micro SDHC. PLEASE NOTE: In order to use the Mini SD variant, you need an adapter that is sold separately. "What is this UHS-I?" UHS-I stands for Ultra High Speed, and the I means Speed Class 1. "What does this have to do with anything?" Some SDHC and SDXC cards support transfer speeds of up to 104 Megabytes per second (MB/S). When a card is rated for UHS-I speeds, it can take advantage of these transfer rates. Please note that not all cards support UHS-I. "Are there any special features of the Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 Card Reader I should know about?" As the title of the device points out, this is compatible with USB 3.0 ports. This port is the most recent update to the USB architecture at the time of writing, which allows for users to transfer data at relatively high speeds, and is a necessity to take full advantage of UHS-I rated SD cards. "How can I tell if I have a USB 3.0 port?" Usually USB 3.0 ports are blue, but I do not know if port colors are industry wide or not. Side note: There are plans to update the USB 3.0 architecture to support speeds up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gb/S). This means that sometime in 2013, USB 3.0 ports could be made to support transfer speeds up to 1.25 Gigabytes per second (GB/S) (1 byte (B) = 8 bits (b). So, 10Gb divided by 8 makes 1.25GB. "Is there any more technical information I should know?" There is no need to install any drivers. Your operating system of choice should be able to detect this as a standard USB Card Reader. However, the packaging only mentions working on Windows and Macintosh platforms. No word on if it works with Linux or not. "Why give it five stars?" The quality of the product is extremely high, it doesn't feel cheap, it is easy to use, doesn't get unbearably hot during heavy use, and it has no problem detecting a moderately wide range of cards for how small it is. The only complaint I have about this is that the reader does take up a little room, which is to be expected. Unfortunately, it make it hard to plug in another device to an adjacent USB port, but this is something that can be easily rectified. In fact, I could have fixed this situation in the time it took me to write this section! "What card did you use this on?" I used a SanDisk SDHC 32GB with a transfer rate of 5.3 MB/S on a USB 2.0 slot. "What comes in the package?" 1 USB Card Reader 2 Interchangeable lids (can be used on both ends) "Any final words?" Considering I have never bought an SD card reader before, it looks like I won't have to buy another for a long, long time. "Is there any Engrish?" Towards the bottom of the packaging on the backside, you will see the following: "Visit (website) for more information and the latest product." Product as opposed to products? How about...     • New to Anker, gave this a shot and didn't disappoint
So I wrote a different review about a power strip I bought. I bought this AFTER I bought the power strip because I was very impressed with the tech, clean layout, and it seems very stable. I had a malfunctioned Samsung microSD card that nearly started a fire and/or burned my laptop motherboard (no joke, literally burned me trying to get it out) so I went with a SanDisk microSD card and needed a reader so that I don't risk that ever happening again. Since the Anker platform strip that I bought was really good, I stumbled across an Anker brand reader and decided to get it. It was really easy, just plugged it in and immediately recognized the SD card. I've used it a few times now and no issues. It's USB3 and I was able to pop over a few gigs of music quickly - the reader seems to process data fast. Since I'm new to microSD card readers I don't really have anything else to say. If it's anything like normal data transmitting with USB sticks then I would say it blazingly fast. I will contest that if anyone IS having issues with copying over files quickly, it would be the motherboard (and that just comes from knowledge of computer building over the years). As an example, I plugged this into my laptop and it dipped a couple of times - meaning it will stay consistent rate of MB/S and then all the sudden drop for no reason. Nothing major, but I have been struggling with processor and heat problems on this laptop. On another computer it doesn't do that. Mild dips at times, but that's it. Overall I'm just putting a tech-wise disclaimer in defense of the product that if you have a slower bus speed on your motherboard or a laptop that's under 1,000$ more than likely it's just a normal power problem with dips. This is also not even a real issue anyways considering it doesn't effect much of the speed process. I think I transferred 12 gigs in a couple minutes - I don't fully recall but it wasn't like 10 minutes or something - I just let it do it's thing and it was done. So it's very good quality. I think I will be continuing purchasing things from Anker. Like I said in my other product review I'm new to Anker so I didn't know what to expect. So far so good.     • A Laptop Must
Apparently like a lot of newer models, my wife's laptop doesn't have a SD card reader. It was a real problem, since she uses them on a regular basis. So I got to be the hero by getting this for her. And it just works, like every Anker product we've ever owned. It looks and feels well made, and the price was more than fair. So far it has read every card that's been tried, including a few from many years ago. I would not hesitate to suggest this reader to anyone. We also appreciate the compact size.
