There is an easy way to cut spirals or "ropes" with a router using a legacy device called a router crafter. Using this router bit in it, it could cut spirals in the wood. Some sanding was required but the routing work was as easy as turning a crank handle. The device will cut spirals at multiples of 15 degrees. The maximum stock size is 3x36". Amana Tool is the only one that I have found who sells these center cutting bits. The 3/16" radius will create approximately 3/8" width spirals. Of course, the point is fragile, so don't drop it! The section of wood that will have spirals can be rounded on a conventional lathe or smoothed out first with an appropriate straight router bit using the router crafter. ... show more
