  • I used these to beef up an old wood attic ladder
Size Name: Large
These are good hinges. I chose to use them in an application they aren’t designed for, so keep that in mind. I saw the other reviews where people used these on older wooden ladders. That’s what I did. I looked at options of installing a new ladder. All the aluminum ones in the $300 range are flimsy these days. The wood of my old ladder was in good shape and I wanted to keep what I had. This is not a simple swap out. You’re not going to just drill new holes, bolt these on and be done in 30 minutes. I’m an experienced home DIYer and this took over 6 hours. Why? Because you have to customize almost every place the hinges mount. Between lining the hinges up so they fold the ladder out, and then dealing with existing hardware and stair-tread location…. it takes sorting out the details, drilling custom holes. All while working on the ladder while it is in place, hanging from the ceiling. A big part of the customization is that you need to fill some of the old holes with epoxy or quality wood filler. Some of the old holes are so close to where I had to drill new ones, the new hole would just be an egged-out weak hole. Some tips if I were using these hinges again: - Remove the lower two sections and all of the original hinge hardware on day one. - Fill every hole with epoxy. Yes, all of them, even the ones you know you’ll reuse. - Let it dry overnight. - Fit the hinges with clamps (see someone else’s review for the pics. - Using the clamps, make sure your positioning works both folded AND unfolded - ( the ladder WILL NOT fold flush to itself anymore like it used to. This is not a problem, just something to be aware of). - Drill a couple holes with clamps still in place - Continue assembling The next steps for you will be dealing with how some of the hole locations run into treads… no place for a nut. Decide, maybe you’ll drill new holes in the hinge and the ladder. That’s probably the way to go. I drilled pilot holes and used structural (deck) lag screws and went right into the tread. You also need holes to the tread reinforcing rods. Make sure to like them up well for drilling your hinge. Am I happy with the result? Yes. Would I do it again? No. If I were to do it again, I’d remove the old hinge hardware, epoxy the holes, buy new hinge hardware of the same style as the old and install those. Using the epoxied holes as my new drill location. You can also drill the old holes oversized and dowel them with hardwood. But if you know that, you don’t need my review to help you with this task. Additional tip, having nothing to do with the hinges. Clean and put a light layer of silicone lube on the contact and pivot points of the springs. Then fill the springs with foam caulk-backing (see pic). Doing this will take the creak and “boing” out of the old springs. With the new hinges, and the spring modifications, my door is almost silent to open and close. See one of my pics for the foam pulled through the spring. Now, the only thing left is to get that bottom section to stay locked out straight when no weight is on the ladder. I’ll probably add magnets. EDIT: I added an example pic of the type of hinges I replaced. I didn’t think to take any “before” pictures. ... show more

  • Paint peeling
Size Name: Large
I feel like these hinges are heavy duty and much better than the hinges I used before these. I build my own folding ladder to go into the attic of my shed. These were pretty easy to install. Of course you’ll need your own hardware. They are very “stiff” when trying to fold, so be prepared more a little elbow grease for manipulation. I have noticed that there is some paint people because of just how tight these hinges are. I really like the little lip on these as some more “beef” to keep the hinges from over rotating. Then I’m not just relying on my on two flat wood surfaces. I feel there is enough movement that these do a great job for how I intend to use them. ... show more

  • Fixed attic ladder
Size Name: Large
Encouraged by other reviews, I got this hinge to replace a very worn out attic ladder hinge. I liked that it used a different bolt pattern so I could drill new holes in the side rails. Results were very good, the ladder is stable and opens without any issues. Be careful when setting up the mounting position and I think it would work for most step ladders. ... show more

  • Perfect
Size Name: Small
I installed these on my attic ladder when the cast pot metal hinges broke. Tip: Shape a block of wood and insert it into each ladder leg. Drill through the block and run the attachment bolts (buy them separately) through the block so you don't crush the leg when you tighten the bolts. You'll need 4 blocks. ... show more

  • Didnt hold up to simple use.
Size Name: Large
They seem to be good on texture but didn't hold up to a small person using this on the step latter. I wouldn't trust a baby's weight with these on anything.

  • The cure for rickety attic stairs
Size Name: Small
My attic stairs had gotten a bit rickety over time and I was contemplating a weekend DIY project to replace at a few hundred $. Then I went searching for a vertical hinge to replace old hinges that were loose, thinking that might solve the problem. These hinges did the trick and now my attic stairs are stable again. When they showed up they were near impossible to turn, and spraying them with some lubricant didn't seem to help much. But it was all about leverage. Once installed they turn fine although not loosely like the old ones. ... show more

  • Decent product / Poor paint job. / A bit expensive
Size Name: Small
Granted the product is a hinge; however, at the price these hinges were they should have come in pristine condition and actuated a bit more smoothly. They were bubble wrapped nicely which then leads a person to believe the product was shipped in this condition. As you can see the paint was flaked off and scrapped off, as well as, paint bubbling in another section. The other hinge not much better. If this were a $12 item then I may have expected, - not really. But at over $30 it should have been in much better condition. ... show more
