  • Amazing cooler for roadtrip
Size: 38QT
I purchased this cooler for a 2600 mile roadtrip to Yellowstone National Park. Didn’t want to have to deal with ice. It was perfect. Plugged into my rear 12v port of my suv. App helped me monitor temp. Used in both fridge/freezer mode and all fridge mode ( by removing divider). Kept all food as it should either nice and cold or frozen on freezer side. Easy to move around. Used both 12v and 110 and both worked well. Perfect size. I won’t roadtrip without it. Compressor has some noise when it kicks on but this isn’t loud and is to be expected. Having wheels was helpful for moving cooler when fully loaded. ... show more

  • Great product, sips power, compressor a bit weak
Size: 38QT
Pros: Sips power (see below), quiet and versatile with the dual zone. Mobile app works great, Bluetooth has excellent range Cons: Compressor seems like it may be under powered. Struggled to maintain temperatures below 10F So I ran a few power tests on my 500wh solar generator at 67F ambient temperature. First was a stress test. I put in a few room temperature freezer packs and water bottles. Ran it on eco first with left compartment at 32 and right at -4. It was drawing about 22 watts on eco. After a couple hours freezer temperature had only dropped to around 15 so I changed from eco to max. Power draw went from low 20s to mid 30s. After 4 hours the battery back was at 80% so about 100wh used. Which was consistent with what the power meter was saying at an average of 25 or so watts between eco and max. Temperature only dropped to around 8F in freezer. Water hadn’t iced over yet at this point. Compressor ran constantly all 4 hours. So I could expect around 600wh over a 24 hour period. I then plugged it into AC and left it running overnight to see if I could get it to drop to the set temp. Best I could do was briefly hit 2F but it usually stayed around 10F. It seems that the compressor really couldn’t keep up. It ran constantly during this time as far as I could tell. All water was frozen solid at this point but couldn’t get it below zero. So this is probably fine if you need to keep ice frozen but for something like ice cream (which has a lower freezing temperature due to the salt and cream) it’s probably only going to work to keep it cool for a short period of time before it gets soft. Now it could be if I had both compartments a little more full with more thermal mass it could hold temperatures better. Time will tell. I was able to get it to hold to around 4F if I turned off the left compartment (which you can do by pressing and holding the + and - buttons) and let the compressor focus exclusively on the right side so there are some options there. I then set the left to 38F and bottom to 20F and plugged it back into the solar generator and let it run overnight. I noticed the power draw was around 20 watts this time. And when I checked again in the morning the generator was at 78% after 13 hours running. Ice was still frozen solid. So about an average of 8.5wh during that time. Indicating the compressor was running for maybe 40% of the time or so that works out to around 200wh over a 24 hour period. Now these numbers aren’t 100% accurate as I’m sure the battery meter on the power bank has some play in it but probably a good general estimate as to what to expect. My final test was to see if I could get it down to -4. So I wrapped it in small blanket, being sure to leave the vents unblocked. Set the left to 38 with a 10 degree hysteresis and plugged it into AC. Beginning temp was 20 on right. After about 3 hours it hit -4 and the compressor shut off. So it can be done but it took the right conditions. I probably still wouldn’t trust it to maintain temperatures below 10F in normal conditions. I did just order one of those insulated covers they make for these that just popped up on Amazon. We I’m we see if that helps. Will be interested to see how it works in higher ambient temperatures this summer. ... show more

  • Hit or Miss
Size: 38QT
I’ve ordered this fridge /freezer before. Had no problems, everything worked great. However had to return because it didn’t fit in the space in my truck. Got a new truck, more space, so I ordered another one. It appeared to be fine out of the box, but upon plugging in, the lid WOULD NOT OPEN without Herculean effort!!! Like ridiculously hard. Then control panel wasn’t working properly, couldn’t set temps in each compartment separately. So I returned it. Well unlike my previous experience, where returning was a breeze with no cost to me THIS TIME I had to pay 87.00!!!!!!! WTH?????? Why the issues in function and why the shipping cost??? I had planned to replace and order another one, but that won’t be happening. ... show more

  • Good fridge, but the lid is a real problem
Size: 38QT
Fridge works well though is a bit bulkier than expected. The two-zone mode works (though the freezer side took 48 hours to freeze two half-gallon water bottles.) Not sure why you want a freezer on a road trip, but more useful was setting the right side at 36 degrees for perishables and the left side at 45 degrees for drinks. Noise can be noticed but is tolerable. Bluetooth was more useful than expected (but has no security.) You're always accidentally touching the controls and they beep but don't do much on the first press. The big problem is the lid. It latches by having two tabs that go into a notch by friction. When you get it, it takes two strong arms to open it. Trying to just lift the lid will lift the fridge off the ground! After filing the tabs down it's a bit better but still not great. Forget about easily reaching into the back seat to get out something from the front. A magnetic door like most fridges would be best. Or a latch would be most solid but still easy to open and close. The rest of it was good so hopefully they will make a model with a better door. All these fridges (not just Alpicool) need to do a better job at figuring a way to stay cold when the car is off. (Many cars shut off their 12v port when off, even the Tesla which has tons of battery.) You can put ice in them but that defeats one of the prime reasons to get a fridge. They could be designed with a place to put a special cooling block which it freezes (even in fridge mode) to give it cooling for overnight or at least a few hours. Another useful option would be a port to connect a cheap sealed-lead-acid battery which it would charge when not running the compressor, and use when the power was off. ... show more
