Top Amazon Reviews

  • Excellent clarity and blazing speed; a worthy upgrade.
Color: Metallic Jade Option: Without Kindle Unlimited
The screen has excellent sharpness and contrast, the best of any ereader I've ever seen in person. It brings to mind another device that featured strikingly good sharpness and contrast despite the layers over the screen: The Voyage. I don't have one on hand to do a direct comparison, but it certainly seems to have that same sort of secret sauce going for it. I'll be very interested to see some direct comparisons from people who still have a Voyage on hand. It's not as apparent in photos, but I'm surprised at how much sharper it is than my 2021 PW. I knew from the early reviews that it would be better, but I wasn't expecting it to be so noticeable. Even my beloved Oasis comes up short in a direct comparison! Much has been made of the speed of this iteration of the PW, and it's not just empty hype. I never thought the word "fast" would ever really apply to an e-ink screen due to the limitations of the technology, but the Kindle team has made that a reality. Pages turn as quickly as I can tap the screen, and while I've never cried out to the heavens about page turns being too slow, it's impressive to see such responsiveness on an e-ink screen. The true benefits of this speed come into play when navigating menus, adjusting settings, and especially when typing. I honestly did not think it was possible for an e-ink screen to be so fast and responsive. This is truly impressive. The speed in itself is not a reason to upgrade to this model, but if you're already considering an upgrade, it is definitely an extra enticement. Despite the larger screen, it's very nearly the same size, measuring about a millimeter taller and wider. Annoyingly, it's just enough that the device won't fit in cases made for the 2021 model. (At least, neither of the ones I have.) The back of the device feels very similar, just a bit slick. I still have no difficulty holding onto it. The power button is still on the bottom, and though I understand why some are annoyed by this, it's never been an issue for me. I've been using Kindles for thirteen years, and while about five of those saw me primarily using an Oasis, that's still a good eight years I used various basic and PW models. In all that time, I don't recall ever pressing the power button by mistake. So I get why it's a point of irritation for some, but it's not a mark against the device for me. I have a Colorsoft on order, and this PW was intended as an early Xmas gift for my mom. While I set it up for her, I just couldn't resist playing around with it a bit, and it has really won me over. If I wind up not keeping my Colorsoft, I'll definitely be getting one of these for myself. The improvements are mostly small, but those little things add up to a noticeably superior experience. Despite the lack of page turn buttons, which I truly love, it just may supplant my Oasis as my main reader! ... show more

  • A Fantastic eReader!
Color: Metallic Black Option: Without Kindle Unlimited
This review is from the perspective of someone upgrading from the Kindle Oasis. Pros: - USB-C!!!! I finally threw out my mini-usb cable that I only needed for my Oasis. - Faster and smoother experience than my previous Kindle, the Oasis. - Far better battery life than the Oasis. Seems like this might actually be a week or more of battery life for reading 1-3 hours per day. My Oasis seemed to need to be charged after two to three days. - Very light. Not sure if it's lighter than the Oasis but it's definitely easy to hold. - Crisp anti-glare screen. - The color of the screen seems more page-like than the Oasis' overly blue-like screen. I like this much better. - Cool page-turn animation you can enable in the settings that the Oasis didn't have. - No ghosting of text. When I first got it there seemed to be a bit but after enough page-turns it went away and hasn't come back. - Cool art is shown when it's in locked mode. Cons: - Not sure if this is a con for everybody but it doesn't have page-turn buttons like the Oasis did. At first I was worried about this but now I don't really care as it allows you to have a smaller kindle which makes it easier to hold. The matte screen finish means touching the screen doesn't really get fingerprints all over it anyway. - Needless 32gb edition forced on you. I'd prefer to save some money and pay for 16gb instead since there's no way I'll ever need 32gb of space for books. - Auto-brightness seems kind of finicky, though it works well enough. ... show more

  • Have an Old Kindle and wondering if it is time to upgrade?
Color: Metallic Jade Option: Without Kindle Unlimited
My old faithful Kindle Touch with it's special cover that includes a pop-up lamp that runs off of the Kindle's battery let me see it's screen in the dark but it bothered my sleeping wife. So, after many useful years, I decided to upgrade on this past Black Friday when the latest 2024 Special Edition 32 gb Kindle hits its lowest price of the year. First, I had thought I'd trade in my old Kindle touch but $30 hardly seemed worth it since it is in Like New condition and works great for days at a time. So, I've decided to keep it as a backup. Second, one surprise was that the Kindle books that my old kindle refused to read (ones that I paid for!) still don't open on my new Kindle Special Edition? Even several of the current Kindle Unlimited books cannot be read on either of my Kindles but I can read them on my Macs and iPads??? No clue why this is. But the key question is was the upgrade worth it and the answer is YES! The new Kindle has a screen setting called, Dark Mode. It does what it sounds like ... makes the screen dark and the text light. In addition, I've turned on and raised the backlight color to a mellow yellow color which is both easy to see AND won't wake you up if you read into the night, as I often do. I leave both of these setting on constantly! I find them to make reading much more enjoyable and very different from when I'm using a bright computer screen. I've also added a cover which I can highly recommend! One warning is that the heavy covers block the wireless charging but a light, shock absorbing one that I found works perfectly with my Kindle wireless charging stand. The one that works with the wireless charger is the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition Case Cover, NOUKAJU Case for Kindle Paperwhite 2024 (12th Gen). The wireless charger I'm using is the Made for Amazon, Wireless Charging Dock for Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. Not only does it work with the cover but it also holds the Kindle in reading position on my small desktop ... a perfect marriage! But currently, that isn't a problem since the battery lasts for several weeks for me! One other caution is that it will play audiobooks over bluetooth devices but most of my bluetooth devices don't appear in its Bluetooth menu? Besides, audiobooks just take up too much space do download many of them. For example, my Kindle library has about 500 ebooks which only take up a small amount of the storage but when I accidentally added my 800+ audiobooks to the download it filled the new Kindle and hadn't finished loading them so, it was just easiest to erase the Kindle and start again! My advice is that if you do want SOME audio books then just download a few of them. If you are new to Kindle, I will warn you that the included manual is a must read and is short. Unfortunately, the on board Help really stinks and short of making notes and then a phone call to Kindle support, I've found that it is MUCH easier just to ask GROK ... Xai's GROK is free to use by anyone using X and it knows all about, not only this Kindle but all previous models and it uses plain language to answer questions IN FULL! It only takes me seconds to get answers so, given a choice I used GROK instead of Amazon support to get my new Kindle fully working ASAP! My final warning is that this new Kindle is a great, time suck! I find myself reading more and longer than I ever have, before. Obviously, that can be taken either way but it is truly meant as a compliment! I find reading to be useful and relaxing. My only regret is that there isn't a GROK button in the Kindle app? It's free to use so, why not? I hope you've found my heart felt review useful? ... show more
