NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • At 95, the legendary Mel Brooks continues to set the standard for comedy across television, film, and the stage. Now he shares his story for the first time in “a wonderful addition to a seminal career” (San Francisco Chronicle), “infused with nostalgia and his signature hilarity” (Parade). ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: New York Post • “Laugh-out-loud hilarious and always fascinating, from the great Mel Brooks. What else do you expect from the man who knew Jesus and dated Joan of Arc?”—Billy Crystal For anyone who loves American comedy, the long wait is over. Here are the never- before-told, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and remembrances from a master storyteller, filmmaker, and creator of all things funny. All About Me! charts Mel Brooks’s meteoric rise from a Depression-era kid in Brooklyn to the recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Whether serving in the United States Army in World War II, or during his burgeoning career as a teenage comedian in the Catskills, Mel was always mining his experiences for material, always looking for the perfect joke. His iconic career began with Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows, where he was part of the greatest writers’ room in history, which included Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart. After co-creating both the mega-hit 2000 Year Old Man comedy albums and the classic television series Get Smart, Brooks’s stellar film career took off. He would go on to write, direct, and star in The Producers, The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, and Spaceballs, as well as produce groundbreaking and eclectic films, including The Elephant Man, The Fly, and My Favorite Year. Brooks then went on to conquer Broadway with his record-breaking, Tony-winning musical, The Producers. All About Me! offers fans insight into the inspiration behind the ideas for his outstanding collection of boundary-breaking work, and offers details about the many close friendships and collaborations Brooks had, including those with Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Gene Wilder, Madeleine Kahn, Alfred Hitchcock, and the great love of his life, Anne Bancroft. Filled with tales of struggle, achievement, and camaraderie (and dozens of photographs), readers will gain a more personal and deeper understanding of the incredible body of work behind one of the most accomplished and beloved entertainers in history. • Mel Brooks is a national treasure!
I've always loved Mel Brooks movies and thought the book was very funny. I learned a lot about the man before he became the household name he is now. It's a great read!

  • It's MEL BROOKS.
Very entertaining. Making movies is hard risky work and he made the best of it. His devotion to his wife is heartwarming. Especially in a city known for squalor. A good read about a good guy and his journey from "how will I pay the rent" to the top of the pile.

  • The Mel Brooks You Know (and Maybe Didn't!)
Who better to write about the life of National Treasure Mel Brooks than the man himself? Nobody, we knew that already! This is Mel's voice, written in the rhythm of his speech, absolutely fascinating. Buy it, read it, and send the man a thank you note!

  • Hilarious
Mel Brooks was my Dads favorite. I got to know his films at a young age. Absolutely frowned upon in todays world. At 51, I'd like to think without them, I wouldn't be as funny or have the great sense of humor that I do. The stories are so good. You can hear Mel's voice as you read. I recommend this to the known universe. ... show more

  • Read this book just for a laugh!
Anyone who has ever seen any movie or interview with Mel Brooks knows that he is a comic genius with a very quick mind. His comedy is zany, infectious, inspired and at times crude and anarchistic. All of those elements make it great fun and he captures all that fun in the colorful stories in this book. Its a pleasant read and satisfying. He provides a master class in how to develop creativity and every aspect of this autobiography highlights his unique talents. We will have other comedians and comic filmmakers but none will be like Mel! ... show more

  • fairly interesting autobiography
Mel Brooks This book is much like almost every other autobiography that I’ve read. It is much more interesting in the beginning than it is in the later portions. Mel came from a poor background in which his mother was forced to raise her sons alone. He was the youngest and the darling of the family. His oldest brother realized that he had a special ability and said that he was not going into a trade but to college. He was blessed to have a loving and supporting family. The later portions of the book I had to skim because they are replete with name calling , ad nauseum, about “ wonderful, talented, (insert your superlative)” people who helped him with his work. I came to realize how hard it is to have to write the material for 1.5 hours of TV each week. It is truly a herculean task. I find Mel’s humor to be very funny and have enjoyed his work. The book is average and hence it gets 3 stars. ... show more
