  • Strings are Too Short
Size: A608(5)-Medium
These strings have a short 36.5" winding length which is good for the basses that I own. The problem is that the overall length of these strings is way too short. On a Music Man Sting Ray 5 that I own, the D string wasn't long enough to wrap around the string post enough times to prevent slipping. These strings are so short they simply won't work on any standard long scale (34") bass, so don't waste your time buying them unless they start manufacturing them longer. ... show more

  • Good Strings --
Size: A608(5)-Medium
***Make sure that you have authentic Alice strings --- their ball-ends have the logo on them to prevent fraud. Just put these in a 5-string. They sound just fine. They don't feel like other strings do but I use Ernie Ball or Fender usually. The feel doesn't bother me. The string tension in the 45-65-85-105 set is similar to Fender and a bit stiffer than Ernie Ball. I have a bass that has had a string-through-body or through the bridge option. I chose to string through the body. That method uses more string-length. These strings are a little shorter than others and if you have a long bass scale or if your tuners are longer than found with a normal Fender, Gibson, or Ibanez type of headstock, you may need to change the way that you wind the strings around the tuning post. I do a reverse locking wind that anchors the string against the tension of the tuning post I don't need to wind the string around more than once to get it to stay in place. If you do it another way you may find that there is not enough length for the string to grab. The technique I use is the same recommended by Enrie Ball for there Ernie Ball Flatwound strings If these strings don't last or if I have an issue, I will update my review. So far, they are good They may turn out to be 5-star strings. ... show more

  • Fine in my cheap bass
Size: A608(4)-Medium
I ordered the four string set and the five string set . They seem to be the same except (obviously) that one set has an extra string. They're both getting the same review because I used the five string set and problems with the four string set should also be in the five string set. I put the five string set in an old squire jaguar that has spent a lot of time on the wall. During that time, the old strings got crusty and yanked around a bit while moving furniture. Yeah - I should have taken the guitars/basses of the wall before moving furniture in that room. The result was that that bass felt gross to play and one of the strings was wonky. These strings fixed all that. They feel fine and play fine. They play and sound like good quality new strings. Who knows how long they'll last or if they'll get all stretchy and lose tune. They've been OK for a few weeks now. ... show more

  • Solid performance
Size: A608(4)-Medium
Basic packaging but strings are individually wrapped / sealed for “freshness”. Certainly came tarnish free. Each string is numbered for reference, although not with the actual string gauge. Decent amount of excess for wrapping around the tuners. Had to trim short. The heaviest string (.105 gauge) actually tapers down in thickness towards the end of the string, so there’s the unwound tip, a thin wound section for the tuning head, then it fattens up to full gauge before it passes over the nut. Well thought out. Installed, the strings feel slick and have the usual new string brightness to them. No dead spots or tonality concerns, they seem like really decent strings. As primarily a guitarist, the cost of bass strings generally horrifies me. The Alice Bass strings are actually reasonable and undercut most bigger brands by a good $5-10. I don’t feel like they offer less performance and l’ll make sure to update on their longevity if there are any issues. But based on initial impressions, these get 5/5. ... show more

  • Bright, smooth, and perfectly to specs.
Size: A608(4)-Medium
These are nice and snappy, bright, and smooth. I installed these on my 2001 Jazz Bass, and there are a few things about these that I noticed liking immediately over my usual brand: 1. The tuner ends aren't wrapped in nylon. So, there seems to be a bit more sustain due to the 'metal on metal' contact, especially when playing open string notes. 2. The ball ends are sightly smaller in diameter, so they aren't rubbing right up against my intonation screws (please see photo for detail). 3. They are sized perfectly in length, and wound almost all the way to the end. When I clipped the ends after gauging the windings on the tuner posts, I had almost exactly the same length left over. So, less fussing in the future, because I know that I can pre-cut and install. Overall, I'd match these up against any of the non-coated strings I've used over the past 45 years, and wouldn't be able to tell the difference in feel, and possibly in tone. Yes, 'newbies' always sound snappier, but these are nice and 'throaty' as well. These are well-made, and I think these are also a good value. ... show more

  • Great strings
Size: A608(4)-Medium
These strings feel the same as the slinkies I usually use. I can’t complain. There seems to be slightly more residue on my fingers after playing than I usually get from new strings but I could be imagining that. I don’t change strings in my bass nearly enough. They sound great, made the slaps come back to life. Very bright. ... show more
