  • Fantastic with Kali Linux and Win 10
Works with Kali Linux (Vbox) and Windows 10. *Pros* 1. 160+Mbps wireless (USB 3.0) 2. Monitor Mode works perfectly 3. Packet Injection is working perfectly *Cons* 1. Mounting device is only a plastic pinch clip, I discarded that dinky thing and just used command strips to mount on the back of my surface. ... show more

  • Can't recommend this right now
I bought this with the hope of replacing my trusty Alfa AWUS036H for use in both Windows and in Kali Linux. I'l divide my review into two sections. Windows: I initially thought this worked great in Windows 10. I did a comparison with my 036H in the same position and the 036ACH was able to pull in more networks, even taking the AC band out of the equation. Connections are stable. However, once I started testing it more I found it to be extremely slow. I was unable to get more than 5mbit down when my laptop's built-in card would get almost 200mbit down. Kali Linux: I bought this as soon as driver support was announced, excited at the prospect of packet injection on AC networks. Unfortunately I think the drivers need more work. Packet injection *does* work - I was able to deauth a computer and capture a WPA2 handshake on my home network. However, it simply does not pick up nearly as many wifi networks in Kali as it does in Windows. I'm seeing a bit more than 1/2 of the networks I see from Windows, whether it's AC networks or otherwise. I also found that more intense usage like OpenVAS would make the device very unstable, often disconnecting it from the network. I was also unable to increase the transmit power in Kali with this device, whereas the same commands worked to boost power on the older 036H. If you are looking to use it for wireless audits in Kali, I'd suggest holding off on this unless you specifically need AC network support despite the caveats above. I did contact their tech support regarding the slow speeds in Windows 10. They told me I may have gotten a defective unit so I'm returning it to Amazon. I will update this review whenever I get a hold of another one. ... show more

If you're going to use these in Kali Linux, as of 01/2018 it's not really ready yet. The best drivers I've found are not the official ones that's included in Kali 2017.3, and the better ones are still having power issues that aren't allowing these to see networks at any great distance. I ordered two of these and I hope they work the drivers out soon. For now I'm shelving them and sticking with the AWUS036NEH. If you're going to use these just as wireless adapters in Windows, they're fine. ... show more

  • How to fix
Got this to work, here are some tips for people that have the problem of it not staying connected: 1. Get a powered usb hub. Read elsewhere that this thing draws more power than it is supposed to, not sure of this but a powered hub seemed to help, connected much faster and stayed connected longer. 2. Most important: stop windows from automatically connecting to wireless networks through the built in windows wireless manager, remove all saved passwords. Not sure why realtek makes us use their own wireless manager but they do, found out it was trying to connect to one network and windows was trying to connect to another, removed all my stored passwords from windows and that seemed to fix the problem. ... show more

  • If you are buying this for penetration testing, installation might take some work.
If you are looking for a great USB wireless adapter with excellent range to connect to networks, this is a great device. Plug and play in Windows 10 means you are up and connected in little to no time. If this is you choice of use, skip the rest, you'll be happy with this wireless adapter! For the penetration testing crowd. Installing the drivers on Kali Linux is a bit of a PITA. For best results, search for "RTL8812au aircrack driver" Git clone and make per the directions before plugging in the interface. Also note that the commands for setting monitor mode are a bit more complex than just running airmon-ng. An easy way to tackle this is to write two Bash scripts, one for monitor and one for managed. However, once you are up and running this adapter performs very well. Also if you are planning to run this connected to a VM, make sure that your VM software is set to use USB 3.0! ... show more
