Sound quality is excellent; the piano & other patches are solid. Key action is in between a keyboard & hammer-action; good spring action. It's full-size fun. At 15 pounds, it's solid and doesn't slip around, it's built strong and sturdy. I've been a lifelong keyboard player, since my Roland D-50 and Alesis HR16/MMT8 in the 80s (all of which still work fine). I was looking for a starter digital piano, and this one is a new release. I normally never buy new-release Anything with no reviews. but I thought I'd take a chance on this, and I'm glad I did. Just got it today and thought I'd write this to help anyone on the fence (and as a thanks to Alesis, I've enjoyed the HR16/MMT8 drum mach/sequencer for decades). The 2 main criteria I wanted are: a) piano sound: how realistic, the timbre and depth? This one is as good or better than my $1k pro keyboards. I'll likely make a review video soon so you can all hear. Much better than expected piano sound; pro-quality at a consumer price, super value. b) key action: how solid, responsive, playable? I'm impressed, very pro build quality, solid and fun to play. I've just played it 2 hours today and am thrilled. Solid, responsive and sounds great. And I really like they are full-size keys, a must. I like the ease-of-use in layering 2 patches (like piano/synth), for different sounds; for variety, though mostly all I care about is the piano sound, which is superb. . Walter, your product review video sold me; thanks Alesis team for an affordable high-quality dp. Also the velocity sensitivity is excellent, a must-have for a digital piano. I thought it had more voices when I purchased it, so I was disappointed that it only had 5 voices. But the sound is phenomenal it has a true deep piano sound and the keys have excellent response and feel, they have true piano-like resistance making it feel like you're on a traditional piano.     • Which $200 keyboard is better? William Legato < Alesis Recital

Arrived late and the packaging was damaged... still worth every penny. I tried the William legato and I wasn't very impressed. Although I have to admit I'm only a beginner/mediocre song writer. This was perfect for taking to open mics. The features seem thin but are actually very abundant. Like I said I'm a beginner. Not a very talented one at that. There's an advance mode that imitates the sustain pedal. This was a great unexpected feature. Less equipment I have to bring to open mics the less things ill lose O . O The demo sound wasn't very impressive. My super basic casio ltk? Sounded better imho. It actually feels very similar. But somehow my lack of talent and skill shows less with the recital. After playing around with the reverb, chorus, volume etc. In Advanced features for about ten minutes.. I went from meh to LOVE <3 although it only comes with a few sounds, you can really adjust it to your liking. The sound is very full and the reverb is great. My favorite thing about this keyboard is kind of shallow. I liked how it looked compared to williams legato and alesis coda. Alesis coda looked much too bulky for me... lol that's a terrible reason I know but this keyboard is so sleek and beautiful lol. If i was a talented professional pianist or a very serious pianist. I'd definetly go with the Alesis Coda hammer action/fully weighted version. It seems like all you really need in a keyboard. But for my needs this one is perfect and easy to play. I do wish that the semi weighted keys could be more weighted.. but that's just me being Nick picky. My casio ltk? Is less weighted than the recital. So this is a great enough upgrade for me atm. The recital is also more weighted than the legato which was one of my reasons for choosing it over the legato. For the price, I feel with Alesis you get more bang for your buck. Which for someone on a budget like me is super important. On my casio ltk? My favorite sound was the muted, mellow piano sound. I wish the Alesis recital had an option to sound more muted but it's full and realistic sound is a winner. It sounds much better than the Yamahas in a much higher price bracket. Ahh technology. I must apologize - to the manufacturer and to those who read my first review. In that review, I heavily criticized the lack of volume when playing several keys at either end of the keyboard. The apparent fault was not actually a fault at all. I simply was not striking the keys hard enough. It seems to me that the keys at either end require a stronger strike than the other keys but, with that being accomplished, the volume is quite comparable with all others. The edit to this review: Just so you know……this electric piano is, in my opinion, a very good selection as a beginner’s model. It’s not “perfect” in all respects, and for the money it is well worth it. However there is one fault that seems to be present with this model. When the organ voice is selected, the volume of the lower keys is very much lower than that of the higher keys. So much so that when lower and higher keys are played at the same time, the lower keys are virtually unheard. At first I thought I had received a defective unit and I returned it. (Marie at customer service was extremely pleasant to speak with and went beyond my expectations in the help she provided). The second unit arrived and it also carries the same fault as the first. All other voices operated well. My personal desire is to learn how to play piano so this fault, while irritating, is of little consequence in that respect. ... show more
