  • Great set with lots of flexibility to configure
I got this set with the expansion pack which was well worth it to me (the 4th Tom has a rim effect that sounds a bit like a tambourine and the second Crash has a different sound than the standard one.) It was relatively easy to put together but in the end it took me 8 hours to play around with things to get them to where I wanted. Then theres the wires which they don’t show in the product images… The drum heads are solid but small, especially the snare. The Kick drum basically needs 20+ pounds backstopping it or to drill the base into something. The frame is pretty sturdy but the two shorter end posts will tend to lean in for me (I did put more than intended on them and only have two Toms on the front bar. (I’m going to put something to lock the rubber bottoms of the rail stand in place.) The choke feature on the Crash & Ride Cymbals is a little sketchy. Theres about a 2” section dead center on the edge that controls it but if you miss the exact spot, no Choke which may not be the end of the world but is annoying when you expect it to work like grabbing a regular Cymbal only to find you were slightly off. Another plus is that it’s easy to fold the sides in and pickup and move. It’s surprisingly light while still sturdy overall. The components to setup each head or Cymbal all have three points of adjustment for tons of control. I would try to get it setup how you want it in terms of height, spacing, angles etc. before running the cables and the leave enough slack to make adjustments without having to reconfigure any cables. Because I knew I would have to screw the Kick pad into something I set up the set on a piece of 2’ x 4’ plywood which is great with something underneath to protect the floor which then allows you to slide the set around easily. I’m very happy with the set and the only additional thing I’ll get ag some point is a double-base pedal. This is a perfect set for a beginner and with the expansion pack it really looks impressive with four Cymbals and four Toms. Overall, great set for a beginner or anyone who doesn’t want to spend $3k plus on a professional digital set. ... show more

  • Great value!
Obviously this isn't a high end piece of equipment. But, for the price, definitely 5 stars. Came in perfect condition. Everything functioning as intended. A pretty large bank of sounds for such a cheap kit. Drums are responsive and the kick is especially sturdy and has good response. For peeps in an apartment, like me, you can't go wrong with this kit. Also, seems like you could record pretty easily with this thing. There are a couples downsides (but because of price, I still think 5 stars): as others have noted, the rims are really high. Even experienced drummers will have to discipline themselves with this to not accidentally rim-shot. Since it sits relatively low (and I'm only 5'6") it helps with the rim-shot issue a little bit. Also, the high hat pedal is not as responsive as I would like. You simply cannot hit it will closed then open to reverberate. It will make a closed sound or open sound--you cannot get both in a single hit, which pretty much eliminates any jazz drumming. Perhaps I just have a faulty hi hat pedal, because it also just tweeks out and makes a static sound sometimes when opening and closing repeatedly. Overall, a little disappointed with the hi hat sounds in general too. Lastly, the sound output is very very weak. If you plan on plugging in headphones, max volume does not even come close to drowning out the sound of you actually hitting the drums. I plugged into a g-boom boombox style speaker--much quieter than the headphones. Definitely consider getting an amp to plug into, even if you just want to use headphones, run the sound through the amp into the headphones. That's it. Despite the things I mentioned, this is still very satisfying to practice on and potentially record. ... show more

  • Good practice kit, although the high-hat lacks nuance
I've been learning drums over the past year and in the process I drove everyone in the house crazy. It literally became a very divisive issue. So I looked around, and this looked like a very good deal, so I said why not? Set-up and assembly is a bit precarious (hint: leave the legs and support beams in their plastic wrappers until you're ready to use them, as the wrappers have the part id's on them "A", "B", "C" etc.) You tighten some of the bolts with an included allen wrench and others with a standard drum key -- it would be cool if you could use just the drum key. Other than that, set up is fairly straightforward. The pads are fairly adjustable and have enough play so you can adjust them without having to use the key. The drums samples sound very nice, and some nice programmability options. The mesh and cymbal pads are very responsive and -- to me at least -- feel very realistic. The kick drum which has an actual striker is really nice so you get a good feel for how it rebounds. The cons: the high hat has very little nuance. It has 3 sounds: closed, open, and pedal tap. There are no real in-between sounds. This was the most disappointing thing about this kit, because playing a real hat is such a joy for me with all it's subtle sound coloring. But, the hat in its 3 positions is very responsive to how hard you strike it, so I think beginners could still get a lot out of it. My only other complaint is that the kick drum rig -- which is very sturdily built -- is held down onto the rug with a strip of poorly adhered velcro which is continually falling off (I just glued it back on with epoxy, so wish me luck). It also comes with 2 thumb screws, but the points of the screws are not sharp enough to dig into my rug so all they do is elevate the rig such that the velcro no longer makes contact. It's a real mess with the kick drum assembly migrating around my living room as I try to play it. I hope Alesis can come up with a better hold-down system. All in all, at this price point, this is a great buy despite its flaws. Perfect for beginners, and I'd imagine great for intermediate players looking for a quieter practice alternative. Edit: gluing the strip of velcro to the kick assembly with high strength epoxy seems to have done the trick. I've put in a couple of hours of playing and it's staying in place. ... show more
