  • Need to re-drill holes.
This is an excellent bookcase when you don’t have too much space on the floor but you can go up and take advantage of dead air space 6 ft. above. The quality is excellent for its price but expect some “minor” scuffs, varnish runs, and light shades of color on some pieces (nothing major). The material is particle board with quality laminate and tinted to color. However; once built, and filled with books (or media) it looks great and only you will know about the imperfections you saw while putting it together. Putting this shelve together requires patience and some skill because the instructions only have two sentences (literally) of information and the rest it’s all drawings in the 6 step process. (Get a helper to hold things). All fasteners are included but you need a Phillips and flat head screw driver, and maybe a small rubber hammer (I did OK with only the Phillips). However; one of the imperfections happens to be with the holes that the removable shelves have and the book case has where the “L” brackets fit to hold the shelves in place. I didn’t find this “error” until I finished putting it together and tried to fit the shelves into place. The small “L” brackets would not fit the holes (without any effort) and thus the shelves would not “sit” flush unto the brackets. If some fit too tight into the shelves and others only go in halfway, when you want to remove the shelves, the one that fits to tight might chip the board when forcing it out. The solution to this problem is getting a small low power (cordless if poss.) drill with a 3/16’’ drill bit and re-drilling all the holes on the removable shelves. You can do this to the removable shelves after putting it together but an even better option is also re-drilling the holes on the 6 ft. boards before you put the case together (test holes with bracket). This will save you grief and give you satisfaction when you put the shelves into the case. Remember that you are only making the holes slightly bigger, just so that the small “L” brackets fit with no effort at all into the holes so be careful not to overdo it. Also, this bookcase comes with a wall safety catch that uses a zip tie so that the book case is “fasten” to the wall and won’t tip over. This safety mechanism must not be ignored since the footprint of the bookcase just over a sq. foot. And it could tip over with little effort. I tried pulling the case towards me and it does tip much easier than it seems so think smart and tie it up to the wall. ... show more

  • Looks and feels like something that cost twice as much
What a gorgeous -- and very sturdy -- bookcase. I couldn't be more pleased. The finish (I got medium cherry) is luscious and flawless. The materials are heavy-weight. The holes line up and the parts fit well together. The parts are also clearly labeled and well-packaged. I assembled the bookcase by myself in less than an hour with no problem at all. As others have noted, the instructions aren't great (but then, don't most furniture-assembly instructions suck, these days?). The main thing to be aware of is that the "C" parts and the "B" parts form a locking system. The "C" pieces must be turned a certain way in order for the "Bs" to fit into them. Then you tighten the "Cs" down and -- voila! -- your shelf unit is very sturdy. It's a clever system that makes for a sturdy finished unit. The manufacturer just needs to explain that better and they'd have more happy customers. But I am 100% delighted with this bookcase. ... show more

  • The hardware was great and so nice it came with a packet of ...
I just installed this recessed into my bathroom wall. I'm very impressed with the sturdiness of this product, the finish and everything about this product is heavy duty. The hardware was great and so nice it came with a packet of spares, which I needed. I wanted something an inch narrower, but this was the narrowest suitable piece I could find. I had to cut out part of stud to make it fit, a big chore, but I'm glad I did it. It helps to have some experience assembling this sort of furniture, which I do have. Directions were correct and complete, If you don't use power tools, (the directions say not to for good reasons) it will take you at least an hour to assemble this, but all parts are labelled and cuts are done well and fit right on mine. ... show more

  • Amazing quality and value
This is the second Alera bookcase I put together as with the first I was expecting typical MDF wood dowel and cam fastener type furniture but these are a very significant cut above. The finish is "real wood" veneer not a plastic laminate with a photograph of wood. The finish is a very smooth hand rubbed look. More amazing is that both sides of all visible boards have the same finish. Even the back is wood veneer on both sides with the smooth furniture finish on one side. The middle shelf is part of the structure and thicker than other parts so the cam lock has to be driven about 1/8" below the surface so the cams engage the screws. One minor complaint is the plastic caps that cover these cams are too small so they won't stay in place. Perhaps glue would help, I just left them off since they don't show anyway. Since it is particle board it may not hold up to constant moves but it is a bargain for the very nice high end look you get. A nice touch is they included a bag of extra hardware parts in case you lose a part. So good that I bought 4 more. ... show more

  • Assembly takes two people
I found that the instructions rely only on the pictures could have been better to relay the proper sequence of assembly. I am handy so it was not too difficult to put together with my friend helping. Also it is made with veneers on compression board (very heavy) which can be seen on the not veneered back edge. Overall I am please with the cherry finish and the rich look it has given the reasonable price. It came packed in a box with good protection and nothing was damaged. If you have young children attach the top to the wall to prevent tip over. I am pleased with the purchase. ... show more

  • Perfect for a narrow space
I needed a tall but narrow bookcase that would complement my larger bookcases, fit in one of two possible spaces and enable me to store an overflow of books stacked on top of my existing bookcases. Assembly was easy - attractive and sturdy appearance; fits nicely in a 19" recessed space between window and wall. I would not hesitate to purchase this item again when I need more space for books. ... show more
