  • High-quality and comfortable
Color: Black
I spent a decent amount of time researching chairs, as I'm one of the masses that are now working from home full time throughout the duration of the contagion. Bonus points, I also spend probably way more time than I should playing video games and needed (desperately) a better chair for that. My criteria were as follows: - Had to be cloth. I have 2 cats that *destroy* leather and PLU. - Had to be comfortable for long periods of time. I'd be sitting in the chair for up to 10-ish hours on any given day for the foreseeable future between office work and gaming. - Had to be ergonomically adjustable to my comfort level. I'm a control freak and need to be able to adjust the height, back angle, and arm rests. That last one can be a pain to find at a decent price. - Had to be affordable enough that my wife wouldn't be angry. See above for conflicting priorities re: arm rests. This chair ticked all the boxes, based on reviews, so I bought it. I've been using the chair for 2 weeks now and I'm very pleased with my decision. (EDIT: I've now been using the chair for ~3 months and it's still great. Read on, dear Amazon customer.) ~~~Material/Build~~~ The cloth fabric on the chair is quite nice. The chair comes out of the box feeling quite sturdy and in the 2 weeks since has held up fairly well. The foam is a nice balance of firm to support and soft to comfort. My rear has not been sore sitting in the chair yet, and I've done a 12-hour day or two in it. It's so far retained its shape (2 weeks is *not* a valid testing period for this; if it was already losing its shape I'd be livid). (Update - 3 months in all is still fine. Shape has retained nicely, I've pulled more 12-hour days in it and have yet to have issues) The cats have explored the chair but I have not yet seen them try to claw into it. I pray this good behavior lasts, though I know in my heart of hearts it's only a matter of time. The chair does hold onto cat hair, so be advised that if you want a perfectly clean chair you'll need to keep a lint roller nearby. I have only 2 complaints about the build quality: 1) The plastic pieces that guard the joints for the back are cheap looking & feeling, and I'm confident they'll be the first pieces to break. 2) The arm rests can be a little wobbly. The mechanism to change the angle and the forward distance is simply moving them - there are no buttons for those dimensions. It takes enough force that you won't be accidentally shifting forward and back, but the downside of that is that there's a little wobble in resting positions. It's easily looked past in my experience. Looks-wise, I got the black chair and it is sleeeeeeeeek. There are only a few logos on it, there are no gaudy bright cushions; I can be in this chair on a webcam and not feel self-conscious that someone is judging my professionalism. That said, my wife's first impression was "whoa, talk about your typical James Bond villain." So there's that. ~~~Comfort~~~ I'll be totally honest, the chair took a day or two to get used to. I had been using fairly flimsy/cheap chairs with little to no support. This chair sits similarly to a car seat, which makes sense given its "racing roots." The seat sort of hugs your thighs, and there are metal supports within that part. If you have wider thighs, I'd recommend looking into the wider version of the chair. For reference, I'm a 6'0, 220lb man. This chair comes with adjustable/removable lumbar and head pillows, which I immediately put to the side thinking "I'll never actually use these." Boy, golly was I wrong. Within the first couple of days I had found my groove on ways to sit while working or gaming and those pillows are *clutch*. The lumbar one especially has improved my sitting posture and comfort level. The back has about 90 degrees to play around with, and locks into place about every 10 degrees or so. I tend to hover in the 20 degree range for working and the 40-50 degree range for gaming. Both are comfortable. I've tried leaning all the way back and decided I would not opt to do that again without proper support structures in place. YMMV. ~~~Value~~~ The cost was apparently within bounds of acceptable per my wife. I've sat in several-hundred dollar office chairs (>$500). This contends with those on comfort and build quality, for the most part. I've sat in several-thousand dollar sitting chairs. This isn't going to be a revolutionary experience for you if you've been sitting in chairs that have an extra 0 in the price tag. For what I paid for this chair, I would 100% recommend it on a value basis. For those of you searching relentlessly for a decent-quality, not-exorbitantly-high priced chair for long gaming sessions or your home office, I'd definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • Update: Base completely broken after less than 2 years. Ghosted by AK's warranty team.
Color: Black/Blue
Edit September 2020 #2: Chair is completely broken. The cracked portion of the base mentioned below completely broke, leaving a huge hole in the frame. The chair is basically unusable now. Still no response from AK's warranty team. I don't mind supporting a product that could use work as long as a company stands behind it, but I'll never recommend that someone buy anything from a company that is dishonest with their warranty. 5/10-year warranty? Yeah right. Go buy a SecretLab for just a little more you'll be better off. Edit September 2020: Chair is failing unfortunately. It is incredibly wobbly and creaky on the base, so I took the chair off to look at it. The metal portion of the base part that connects to the bottom of the chair is actually cracking. Not sure how long before it breaks entirely but I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy a Secret Lab. The chair hasn't been moved, tipped over, dropped, or anything. I reached out to AKRacing's warranty team and they asked for a receipt and photo of the damage, which I sent a couple weeks ago and never heard back. On top of the failure of the base the fabric is very worn as well, and there's all sorts of lumps underneath the surface of the fabric. Overall the chair is looking quite ragged after less than 2 years, which is disappointing, especially considering AK's longer warranty is the reason I bought this chair in the first place. Edit March 2019: Chair finally started emitting a faint squeak when rocking. Very impressed with how long it held out. I pulled off the star base and lubed up the bearings with some white lithium grease, and let some thinner household grease seep into the tension spring while it was upside down. Squeak is now gone again! Edit Jan 2019: I've decided to update my review from 4 to 5 stars. The one reason why is because this chair after almost 4 months of daily use is still just as solid as the day I bought it. That doesn't sound like an achievement but it is for me, mainly because of two reasons - I adjust the chair a lot, and I rock back and forth in it a lot. The I put the chair and armrests in a different position depending on whether I am gaming or not. When I'm not gaming and just lounging watching YouTube or movies, I channel my inner grandpa and use the chair almost everyday like a rocking chair. Every single chair I have EVER owned, including $600+ leather office chairs at work start feeling loose after a little while, but worst of all they start to SQUEAK. This chair still is not only solid with no wobble at all between the cylinder and the seat itself, but it is still silent as the night. Every other chair I've ever owned lasts maybe 2 or 3 weeks or less before they start to squeak, but not this thing. So despite my few reservations listed in my original review below (sub-par assembly instructions and no physical attachment between the chair and the base) I think for the long term this chair is going to be well worth the purchase price and those two small caveats. I highly recommend it. Original review: There are a few things in life that I believe are worth spending the money to get good quality instead of looking for the budget option. These often are the things that will be used for many years on a daily basis, such as furniture, appliances, a mattress, etc. A good office chair falls into that category for me. I would much rather spend a little extra now to get a good quality chair that will last for 5 or 10 years rather than find something cheap that I'll have to shortly replace. While this isn't the top of the line, it's certainly much more expensive than all of the most popular chairs on Amazon, but there's reasoning behind that. The frame and base are all full metal, and the gas shock and wheels are likely better quality than what you'd find in something cheaper too. Overall the build quality and materials are very good, and don't pretend to be anything more special than they are. Many of the "budget" chairs have plasticky fake leather material, which after a year or two is going to start wearing and peeling. I speak from experience! While that looks fancy, it doesn't last. This chair thankfully is all cloth, which will wear much better than the cheap chairs over time and has the added bonus of not being super cold if you sit in it without pants on. Don't ask me how I know that... The other big plus for me is adjustability. Not only can this chair's backrest tilt waaaaay back (much like a car seat), but the armrests are very adjustable too. They can be moved up or down, pointed straight, outwards, or inwards, and even be moved forwards and backwards. This is a big deal for me since I'm very picky about making sure that the armrests are at just the right height and position for my desk so as to not strain or aggravate my shoulders and elbows. Overall I'm happy with this purchase. I'll be happier if the chair still is equally solid in 3 years or more. The only reason that it has 4 stars instead of 5 is because: 1. There is no way to fasten the chair to the gas cylinder, and no way to fasten the gas cylinder to the base. This means that gravity and your own weight are what hold the bottom half of the chair together. It's not a huge deal, but something to keep in mind if you're planning on picking the chair up to move it around, as that big heavy metal base might come off in the process. 2. The instructions are not the worst I've ever seen, but they're not the best either. I was able to put it together without any difficulties, but less-assembly-savvy people might have a little trouble. What I DID struggle with for just a moment was trying to figure out how in the world the two pillows should correctly attach to the chair. This is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions, and there are no completed photos of the back of the chair, so you're left to pretty much figure it out by yourself. Overall I do recommend this chair. It's a little pricey for the final product, but if it lasts the test of time it will be worth it. ... show more

  • Painful and to small for bigger men even with a 330lb rating
Color: Black/Red
Package arrived on time and the box was in pristine shape. I ordered this specific chair after researching different chairs by different companies. After many options I decided on this one for a few reasons. I'm 6ft tall and 270 lbs. This chair is rated for 330 lbs. Steel frame. Non leather. And great reviews. Adjustable arms and reclines. Loved the color. The chair I received looks and feels just as I hoped. Amazing support. Easy to assemble. Doesn't get to hot. Easy to adjust. Now I rate this chair 5 star in support because its amazing for my back. 5 stars in assembly. Really easy. 1 star for comfort though. The chair has small leg support flaps by the thighs. I get why. And they would be great but 2 things. If anyone is over 250 lbs(less maybe) or has thicker thighs as I do, the flaps dig in painfully. BUT I ordered 2. 1 for me and 1 for my son. And after sitting in my sons. I realized my seat part of the chair is some reason narrower and the flaps are bent more in. Like extremely noticeable. I tried to sit in it anyway, but it's so painful that after 30 minutes I have bruises forming on the sides of my thighs. So i tried my sons. It's better, but for someone thats on the larger side, it's still uncomfortable. The flaps are just too narrow and worse when they are bent in to far. I believe it's a manufacturer defect with mine. And will be contacting them. And depending on how they respond I'll be happy to update this review. ... show more
