Description

AKiTiO Node - Finally an affordable eGPU box The Thunderbolt 3 eGFX box is a low cost expansion chassis designed to house an external graphics card. Connected to the computer via Thunderbolt 3, the additional GPU power instantly upgrades a regular laptop or a mini PC and makes it possible to do things that would normally require a high-end workstation or gaming computer. For video editors and colorists, the dedicated GPU reduces the time it takes to render the footage, a computer that was not powerful enough for a VR headset is now potentially VR ready and for those that like to play games, these can now run at much higher frame rates than before. Features Thunderbolt 3 for lightning fast transfer speeds up to 40 Gbps 1 PCIe (x16) slot supporting full-length, full-height, double-width cards Spacious enclosure for use with standard and large sized graphics cards PCIe x16 slot supplying up to 75W of power Built-in 400W SFX power supply to provide extra power to GPU 4 lane PCI Express 3.0 compliant interface Removable back panel for double-width cards Carry handle to easily transport the device The power of external GPUs Thunderbolt 3 brings Thunderbolt to USB-C at speeds up to 40 Gbps, creating one compact port that does it all – delivering the fastest, most versatile connection to any dock, display, or data device. In combination with the AKiTiO Node, this makes it possible to instantly upgrade your regular laptop or Mini-PC and achieve a performance that usually requires high-end workstations or specialized gaming computers. Supports standard and large sized PCIe card The PCIe (x16) slot accepts full- length, full-height, double-width cards with enough space available inside the enclosure for both standard and large sized graphics cards. Read more Extra power for graphics cards The built-in power supply provides enough power for the AKiTiO Node (~10W) as well as for graphics cards. If the standard 75W through the PCIe slot is insufficient, two extra pairs of 8-pin (6+2 pin) power connectors are available inside the AKiTiO Node that can be connected to the GPU, providing a total of about 390W. 40Gbps bandwidth of Thunderbolt 3 The four PCIe Gen3 lanes and the Thunderbolt 3 interface are capable of transfer rates up to 40Gbps, providing enough bandwidth even for the most demanding PCIe cards. • Akitio Node - The missing link.
The Node was literally plug-n-play for me. I popped in a GTX 1070, plugged in the provided T3 hobbit cable (it's necessarily VERY short), hooked up the HDMI between Node and TV, plugged in the power, turned everything on, and voila! It all just worked. WIndows 10 did its job- installed the driver, rebooted, and all was perfect. I haven't had a single issue yet (at 1 month now). Others have complained of the fan noise but I fervently disagree. My old gaming desktop fan system was much louder. I hardly notice any noise at all unless I stop to pay attention and listen for it.Playing games or music or a podcast- I am not bothered at all by fan noise. Based upon reviews, I was prepared to swap out the fan and the PSU, but have found neither to be in need of replacement. I expected a four star product but I am elated to say that the Node is 5 stars all the way. I love it! I'm playing my games at the highest settings and getting, at least, 60fps. Originally, this was just going to be a bridge until I built a new rig, but now I might just stick with my Node-laptop setup. Just FYI for those thinking about buying one- I am using a Yoga 720 13" 81C3000LUS (with the 8th gen i5-8250U, only 8gb ram, 256gm SSD). Again, even the Yoga was a bridge pc until I built a new rig. Now I might just upgrade the ram and ssd with the Node. I can't emphasize enough- you MUST have a Thunderbolt port on your computer! Also, you really should have a separate charging port. While the Node will provide some charging power, it will not be enough to keep your laptop charged while playing games. ... show more

  • Works Perfect!
Took a little bit of work but was able to get my this working on my Mid 2015 MacBook Pro OS X and Windows 10 BootCamp using a NVIDIA GTX 1080 a Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and a standard Thunderbolt 2 cable. About a day of install to work out the kinks. For BootCamp Windows 10 turn on metered internet connection to prevent auto updates from breaking the configuration. ... show more

  • Easy to use and powerful
It is expensive, but will hold basically whatever graphics card (GPU) you put in there. I am not using this unit for gaming, so my review is related to an uncommon use case. I have a 2013 MacBook Pro that can run up to two external displays, but I have four on my desk right now. So I had two options, buy a new laptop or attempt to use an eGPU. I went for the eGPU option because the MacBook Pro that can run four external displays is really expensive and you end using all of the Thunderbolt (TB) 3 ports. So I bought this unit and put a reasonable cheap GPU that can run 3 external displays and connected it to my MacBook Pro using an Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter (since my MB Pro has only TB1). Initially I was concerned that bandwidth of T1 would not be enough for 3 displays but at the resolution that I am running the screens at the office (1680x1050), this is not an issue. To sum up, I can happily confirm that you can use this unit on machines with TB2 or TB1, with the corresponding limitations in speed, not noticeable for what I do, but I can imagine that will multiple 4K displays, this might be an issue. Finally, it is expensive, but you get what you pay for PROS: - Easy to use. Thunderbolt is pretty much plug and play, especially with the eGPU support that will come with macOS High Sierra. - Big, can hold a full sized GPU CONS: - Fans are somewhat noisy (I will attempt to replace them at some point) - I would have expected better finishing in terms of paining, but that doesn't affects its functionality. - Big, it is difficult to hide ... show more

  • It wasn't what I expected, but it works as it was intended.
Using External graphics isn't a turnkey solution. Some of my experience. I bought the Node to get better performance using VR with HTC Vive and my 980Ti with intentions to upgrade to 1080Ti or 1180(2080?). My ASUS ROG laptop didn't have Thunderbolt software pre-installed or configured. Laptop doesn't use eGPU by default. Set eGPU to be used in NVidia control panel. GPU-Z shows load in internal GPU for most applications/games. Some games use internal GPU, some use eGPU. Attach external monitor, disable internal laptop display. Works better than internal 1060, but there is a ~ 20% - 30% performance drop from desktop. I bought the Node to make portable laptop VR Performance = Desktop. Taking an external monitor with a laptop and eGPU sucks! Bought a Headless DisplayPort adapter connected to the GPU. Works without carting a monitor! External 980 Ti is slightly better than the 1060. 1070 Ti is very close performance to 980 Ti, so I need a 1080 or 1080 Ti for good VR or 4K performance. New NVidia cards are expected to be announced in March 2018, so better performance with less power is expected, so now it seems wise to wait. I hope this informs expectations. ... show more

  • Excellent eGPU!
Fantastic. Works great with my MacBook Pro 13 (2016) and my Dell XPS 13 9360. Mac OSX requires an enabler script available at egpu.io. Windows is plug and play! Running this with a 970, and I've tried my 1070 in it too. Both work great, although there is no pascal support in OSX.
