  • Good customer Service and slight problem.
I just assembled this spreader but have not used it yet. I recieved the spreader on June 1st. I was going to assemble it that evening. I laid out all the parts and found that one piece was missing, the spreader plate! Not something you could pick up at the local hardware store. On June 2nd I called customer service. There was no hassle, they just took the information and sent it out. It arrived June 4th, today! I assembled it this evening. Assembly instructions were easy to follow and the YouTube video was very well done. There was one problem. After putting the spreader plate on, the next step is to put the hopper on and then the Delrin Bushing. Unfortunately, the spreader shaft was not well alligned, see photo 1 and the bushing could not be inserted. Careful inspection showed that the bushing plate, through which the spreader shaft protrudes, was slight bent, just a few degrees. See photo 2. This also put stress on the plastic bushing in that plate which would have worn out quickly if the problem were not corrected. I took a pair of pliers and bent the plate back into place. The spreader shaft lined up and the Delrin bushing fell into place. Also, the bushing in the plate fell in place as well. Someone not mechanically astute might have found this very annoying and a challenge. The rest of the assembly went very easily. Tomorrow I will see how it works and will update this review if I am allowed. Today I spread 250 lbs of bead fertilizer on my 3-ish acre lawn. I only put 100 lbs in at a time. I am not sure the hopper would hold more than 125lbs of 19-19-19. Everything went about as expected. The application rate settings are not an exercise in accuracy so I will have to experiment with my irregularly shaped yard to dial it in. I did notice that the hopper gate would not close completely when I released the handle and a small amount of fertilizer would still come out. I suspect a few beads kept the gate from closing. I could easily reach the gate handle from the seat of my CubCadet riding lawnmower, but it was sometimes a challenge to locate quickly. I will be adding a wider handle to make it easier to grab without looking. I did not experience the problem of the gate setting moving with the reoeated opening and closing of the fliw gate. I found the metal thickness to be sufficient, notwithstanding the bent bearing plate I mentioned earlier. I dont expect it to be a problem in the future.. ... show more

  • Gave it 4 Stars but.....
The spreader is sturdy and well made. Assembly was reasonable and all the parts were in the bag. =) But.... 1.) I don't know what the 185 pound capacity must refer to. I guess in hindsight this must mean total weight of some very heavy material but I was thinking in terms of grass seed and thought I would get 3, 50 pound sacks of grass seed in the hopper and cut way down on the refill stops. But that is not the case, I could only get about 75 pounds of winter rye grass in the hopper and that amount was really an overfill. 2,) Not sure how the manufacturer estimated the settings for different material but I could not rely on the settings. For example, a course grass seed setting of 4 is recommended but I had to set to 8 to even get the right amount of seed to flow out of the hopper. So I ended up calculating the square footage of a section of the yard (in this case 13,000 sq feet) and picked a setting of 4 per the directions and then distributed seed over the entire area and then checked amount of seed distributed. Maybe 30 pounds instead of the desired amount of 75 pounds. The setting ended up being 8. So , my advice is that you take some time and make your own "real world" setting vs delivery for a given product. ... show more

  • Best customer service of any product I've ever purchased!
After assembling and using the spreader the first time a part broke. When I called the Agri-Fab telephone number included on the instructions I was pleasantly surprised to speak with a real person rather than go down the touch tone abyss, as with most companies these days. The representative, Ms Mayra, was very courteous and helpful. She knew all the parts for my specific model and was able to pinpoint exactly what I needed in just a few minutes. I received the part the very next day and even followed up with me to make sure I had the installation instructions. I have a significant vision impairment that made tapping out a pin a hurdle. Not Agri-Fab not Mayra's fault but my own limitations. A few days after learning of my difficulty, Agri-Fab and Mayra sent me the entire subassembly ready to bolt on and go. My Agri-Fab broadcast spreader works like a champ, and I couldn't be more pleased with my Agri-Fab spreader or their outstanding customer service. How a company stands behind their product in the days, weeks, and months after the sale determines value. You won't make a mistake by choosing Agri-Fab. ... show more

  • Works but could be better
I have used this to spread both fertilizer and grass seed on 5 acres. Spreads ok but seems a little inconsistent. The hopper exit jams easily so material doesn't come out. The cotter pins that hold the wheels on sheared off so right now it is unusable. Easy fix but this should not happen on a brand new product. When putting together the handle that controls the hopper opening size would not align with the numbered opening size label. I had to peel off the label and move it. ... show more

  • Disappointed
Poorly designed, shear pin on drive wheel needs to be bigger, it sheared on the first round. I drilled it out and replaced it with a 1/4-inch bolt. Bushing on drive axle is plastic and will fail. I could only put one 50lb bag of fertilizer in the spreader at a time and have it work properly.
