  • Great Product - Should have purchased long ago!
Installing your own water softener is not for the faint of heart. I have to confess I was intimidated by the cost and complexity, and delayed replacing by old softener much longer than I should have. The Fleck 5600SXT by Pentair is the Toyota Camry of water softener controllers - it is widely used because it is economical, and it works. Two concerns remained: 1: Is this softener package any good, i.e. the tanks and the media 2: Is installation of a water softener a DIY project that I am capable of? First, some background - we live in northern California and use well water. The water is hard and has high concentrations of iron and hydrogen sulphide. Water ph is fine. Our old system used a calcite filter and a water softener, but it was old and ineffective. I got 3 quotes from professional installers, $3900, $5600 and $8400. The spread was a red flag. So I went to an analytics lab and got great advice. First, I was told that it's unlikely that my well is very different from my neighbors' wells, so don't do anything strange. Second - Iron and Hydrogen sulphide are symptomatic of infestation by two symbiotic bacteria. The first piece of advice translates to: buy a generic filter plus softener. The second - regularly shock your well with chlorine. So I generously chlorinated my well, and after 6 hours ran the sprinklers to clear the chlorine smell from the water. This improved the water quality going into my filters dramatically. The garden hose bib water no longer smells like rotten eggs. This also reduces the amount of filtering that the softener plus filter have to do. I plan to shock my well on a regular schedule. Next, I chose this softener, and and an air injection filter https://www.amazon.com/Air-Injection-manganese-Removal-Oxidizing/dp/B004FVZHLC/ref=ice_ac_b_dpb?ie=UTF8&qid=1538581570&sr=8-1&keywords=air+injection+iron+sulfur+and+manganese+removal Installation wasn't exactly easy, but you can always get the help of a plumber. I decided to do the job myself, and after a few fits and starts got it all done. I recommend the use of Sharkbite fittings like this: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sharkbite+female+adapter++1+inch&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Asharkbite+female+adapter++1+inch, and https://www.amazon.com/SharkBite-U260LFA-Plumbing-Connector-Fittings/dp/B0031118WO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1538582278&sr=8-3&keywords=sharkbite+1+inch+elbow A tight spot copper tubing cutter similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=node%3D3741181&field-keywords=1+inch+tubing+cutter&rh=n%3A2619525011%2Cn%3A3741181%2Ck%3A1+inch+tubing+cutter&ajr=2 was a great help getting everything cut to size. The instructions that came with this softener are not good. However, the supplier has outstanding technical support, with real live people that answer the phone. I recommend that you google and download an installation guide for the Fleck 5600SXT controller directly from Pentair the manufacturer. You will find several helpful 3rd party installation guides, but in my opinion, the Pentair guide is the best. I had one minor issue after installation - the check valve at the bottom of my brine tank allowed water in, but blocked brine draw. It has a little ball float that is supposed to open when there is brine in the tank, and close after its all been drained out. The little ball was getting stuck. I removed the brine pipe from the controller. Sucking on the pipe confirmed that the valve was stuck. Blowing air down the pipe freed the ball. I reconnected everything and it's all working great now. I am delighted with this water softener, and the air injection iron and sulphur filter system. My only regret is that I should have installed this years ago! Now that my water is soft and iron free, I'll have to figure out how to remove the old lime and iron rings in the toilets, basins and bathtub... ... show more

  • great deal for my needs, easy enough diy install
no tech support at all, called a dozen numbers and got no help. I just stopped and took a few to figure out how to install the salt tank, wasn't like the pictures. The tubing went in a weird spot. But i had the whole thing installed in under a hour. I used water heater flexable aluminum hosing to attach it. Its been going for a few months now with no issues. It did soften the water, im on well water and it made a huge difference. Now if it last more then 5 years it'll be better then my 6000 dollar Calligan. That thing was 🗑. I hope i can just order a brine tank loaded like this one came when i need one. My water makes the life of those 2/3 what they should last. Hope this helps someone ... show more

  • Reasonably Good quality, design could be better.
I’m an engineer and do most household repairs myself. This unit has well-made tanks and a good controller. I was and am still a bit concerned about the plumbing interfaces. The interface uses and plastic adapter to provide the pipe thread interface, and this adapter seals with radial seal o-rings, which is excellent modern design practice. Also, the plastic is glass filled resin, making it very strong. It’s not cheap plastic. However, the 1” NPT male threads are cut into the plastic rather than molded in. This makes the threads very rough. Also pipe threads are tapered, which is obsolete sealing technology that persists due to tradition. The problem with these facts is that the plastic pipe threads leaked when initially installed with the proper Teflon sealing tape. I had to tighten and tighten and tighten some more to get it to finally stop dripping. And this high torque applied to tapered threads risks cracking the fittings and a catastrophic leak under full supply pressure (70psi+ in my house). The adapter should be metal for use with tapered threads. ... show more

  • Very happy! Very Large - watch Youtube videos for easy install instructions
Very happy with my purchase. I combined this with an Aquasana whole house 3 stage filter (Particle filter, main carbon filter, post filter). We live in the country and have well water which is surprisingly clean to begin with. It is very hard and almost acidic. However, we do not have to worry about iron. The recommended installation was to install the softener first and then into the filter. The backwashing is supposed to take care of smaller sediment that gets trapped in the softener - hopefully that way, the filter will last much longer. I installed the system in the crawl space under my house. I have about 48" from ground to the floor joist. However, I failed to read the dimensions of this 5600SXT - it is a total of 63" tall. So I had to dig... not a problem, but be aware that this thing is LARGE. The fittings of the top unit fit together quite well and nothing needs to be tightened much - hand tight is all it takes. The instructions are garbage but there are some great videos on youtube that walk you through the process. The only downside was that hoses for the 1" connectors for inlet and outlet were hard to come by at my local hardware store. So I had to use some transition pieces down to 3/4" - I have 3/4 pex anyways, so the flow rate did not change. Overall, great softener - can't compare with any other product, but it has been working flawlessly. Only done one backwash right after installation - have yet to reach the water usage for another backwash. We are 2 adults and 2 young kids with 3 full bathrooms. ... show more
