This is my first experience using a laser engraver, and at this entry level price point/power level I anticipated some hiccups. This anticipation was based on my experience with budget-friendly 3D printers that work well but need some tinkering/tuning before achieving reasonable results. This laser engraver comes 99% assembled. No belt/rod/tram mounting or adjusting whatsoever. Slide the laser module into its mount, plug in the connection and this thing is ready to rock. The software is likewise incredibly intuitive and user friendly, again based on a comparison with 3D printing. I'm using Lasergrbl which is free, if you have a Mac you will need Lightburn. After importing an image, there are only a few variables you'll need to set - engraving speed and power. The manual gives you a general idea for engraving/cutting various materials, but Lasergrbl lets you run a simple power vs. speed test (see last photo) that runs varying speeds/power levels automatically in a table of squares. This takes the guesswork out and saves a tremendous amount of time tinkering. Last, I've been an electronics hobbyist for some time but only recently started making my own PCBs. I didn't expect PCB etching to go well, but the results were incredible. The artifacts in my final copper trace photos are all user error - it was the 2nd PCB I've attempted, the first being a free hand drawing. I plan to decrease the engraving speed and increase the number of passes for my next PCB tests but am beyond thrilled with how this first attempt came out.     • Great Entry Level Laser
This is a great entry level laser. It is very capable of doing all kinds of cool small hobby projects. I love that it came assembled, and ready to use right out of the box. I own another slightly larger 5w diode laser, and I run it on Lightburn, so I kind of knew what to expect with this unit. It did not disappoint me in the slightest. If you are wanting to try your hand at using a laser engraver, this is a great unit to start with. I've always used Lightburn, and it works very well for me, but I know many folks that use GBRL, and that is free software. It's price point is amazing, and I would absolutely recommend this as a first unit to learn on. ... show more
