  • A basic mini PC for streaming, reading email, and social media
This ACEMAGIC AK1 Plus Mini PC is tiny. It should handle everyday stuff fine but don't even think of 3D gaming or doing anything graphics intensive on it. Video editing - probably not a good idea. Fortnite - questionable performance I'm guessing. Below are the pluses, at least from my point of view and intended usage. - Comes with Windows 11 Pro preinstalled. That's worth at least $100-150. Kudos to AceMagic for including the Pro version and not Home. It's capable of joining a domain if you wanted to for some reason. - 16 GB of RAM. You may see similar mini PCs out there from other vendors or even AceMagic that only have 8 GBs. Don't do it. Spend a bit more for the 16 GB. You'll be able to have more apps open. The Intel UHD Graphics GPU uses shared memory so you're also losing some of that 16 GB for video processing. - The bottom half of the PC is a 2.5" SATA HD enclosure that connects via a USB C connection to the mini PC sitting on top of it. They're held together via 2 clips. I put a 1 TB SSD drive in mine. This saves me from having to buy an external enclosure that hangs awkwardly off the side to expand my storage. It shows up as an internal drive rather than external USB drive, which is nice because that means I can't accidentally disconnect it when removing another USB stick. - Plenty of USB ports - 2 USB3 + 2 USB2 - which is more than I'll ever use - 2 HDMI ports although I can't imagine plugging in more than 1 monitor into it. I'm planning on using this as a media PC for my TV to stream movies from a network share with VLC and watching YouTube TV. - It's very very quiet. - Pretty much stock install of Windows 11 as far as I can tell with no bloatware except for the RGB LED control app. All the useless shortcuts are ones that Microsoft includes in every instance of Windows 11. Now let's get to the not so great stuff - the obnoxious RGB lighting. You can turn it off via an included app. The problem is the system doesn't seem to remember the setting, at least on mine. A reboot and the lights are back on, even if the app says it's off. Looked in the BIOS for a possible setting to turn them off but no luck there. The other problem with the LED control app is that Windows Defender detects it as malware. It disappears from Task Manager after I close it so it doesn't seem to be hanging around. If you're freaked out by this just let Windows Defender quarantine the files. Of course that means you'll have to put up with the RGB lighting. Anyways, the app is useless to me as it can't do its one job and is a completely fail. Googled it and it seems the utility is buggy and it's been that way since 2022. I resorted to opening the case and unplugging the cable for the LEDs from the motherboard. If you plan on doing this you'll also have the opportunity to upgrade the SSD if you're so inclined as it's a removable M.2 SATA drive. Most of the connections, except for the 3 USB ports on the front, are on the right side of the PC instead of the back, which is a bit awkward and makes cable management a bit difficult. Aside from these 2 issues I think this will serve me great as a media PC. ... show more

  • Nice compact PC .. Good alternative to the Intel NUC
I'll start off my review by saying that I'm an IT professional with 20+ years in the industry. I've worked with a ton of different types of computers and accessories over the years. I've been dabbling with Raspberry Pi machines for a bit for a project that I've been working on but recently determined that I really needed a Windows machine for this specific need. I've been interested in this small PC's ever since using the little MAC Mini's to setup display signage for a company I worked for. I really didn't want a MAC though. A friend turned me on to the small Intel NUC machines however by the time I was ready to get one Intel discontinued them. That's where a company like this comes in by continuing to manufacture the NUC style machines. Out of the box I was impressed by how solid the unit felt. I also like the expandability and being able to replace the M.2 drive with something larger. For me a pre-installed Windows 11 Pro (fully licensed) was also a very nice touch at this price point. With Windows pre-installed it was literally a plug-n-play setup. Grabbed a keyboard from my closet and a wireless mouse off my desk and was up and running in minutes. Unfortunately I don't have a 4k monitor to test this out on but my 27" 1080p ASUS is working fine though I couldn't set the refresh higher than 60hz. Not a big deal since i'm not using this for gaming. The video driver is on chip Intel UHD which is good enough for a machine like this. Performance wise the box does well and it's fairly snappy. I have a couple pro level weather applications that I tested out for processing power and they worked fine. Watching YouTube videos, Google Earth Pro use, watching streaming movies, etc.. all work fine. I'm using it to write my review as well. The LED lighting is a gimmick obviously but it's kinda cool and keeps the box from looking like a plain jane square box. A really nice inclusion that I didn't expect though was the VESA bracket to allow the box to be attached to the back of a monitor. That really makes it nice to have the appearance of an "all in one" type machine or if you're going to mount it on a wall it helps with simplifying the mounting solutions. The only drawback for me with this is that it doesn't appear to have any type of cooling fan. Just letting it sit without putting any processing on it (other than a screen saver) caused the temps to hit 160F at one point. Also the side of the unit with all the USB ports gets fairly warm. Not to the point that you can't touch it but it did get pretty warm under load. A small fan would have been nice to be included or an external heat sync. Overall I really like this little box and it's going to get a lot of use. My plan is to mount it on the wall in my garage so I can watch YouTube video's and plug into my test equipment without having to drag the laptop our or finding a place on my crowded workbench for a desktop system. Great unit! Recommended. *Note... this was really nice to get a machine that had absolutely no "bloatware" installed on it other than the basic Microsoft stuff. Also, not knowing who this company was I did a full malware and virus scan after connecting to an isolated network and found nothing. Nice clean machine. ... show more

  • Nice little PC with Windows 11 Pro included
This is a nice little PC that includes Windows 11 Pro although that's not mentioned in the description. Setup was easy using an HDMI-connected monitor and a USB-A-connected mini-keyboard with touchpad. This mini PC is adequately configured for my needs although a more demanding user might want to update it with faster RAM (still limited to its current 16 GB) and a larger primary SSD (up to 2 TB). That entails removing the four foot-pads to reveal the connecting screws to get at the innards of the PC. There is also an easily detachable bay for installing a second SSD or HDD without the need to open up the PC. The PC's ports are adequate for my use cases though I wish it had a USB-C port on the main case. (Detaching the secondary drive bay exposes a USB-C port, though that's inconveniently located on the bottom of the PC.) Because I'm thinking of using this as a travel PC (mostly for email and for backing up my photos each night) I installed Splashtop's free "Wired XDisplay" software on both the Mini PC and on my iPad Pro. That lets me use the iPad as the Mini PC's monitor when they're connected by a lightning/USB cable. And if I end up not needing the second drive for my travels, removing the detachable bay means saving even more space in my carry-on bag. All in all this will be a very useful mini PC, available at a very reasonable price point. ... show more
