  • True value beyond FL Studio
(Read the last paragraph for the TL:DR) I’m new to Fruity Loops, having traditionally regarded it as subpar as compared to other flagship DAWs (Ableton, Logic Pro, and Protools to name a few). However much time has passed and the wider adoption of music production has seen the incorporation of further capabilities across more DAWs. As a creative seeking inspiration, I decided to finally give Fruity Loops a more in-depth examination, and continue to be impressed with its capabilities. Part of facilitating that process is having Chris’ book. It’s been a boon to helping me become acquainted with the workflow, which as it turns out is quite intuitive. I also appreciate that the book isn’t just a dry dictionary listing of DAW capabilities. Chris takes the time to educate about content as well. For example Chapter 2’s “Understanding music theory in modern pop music” spells out how to make ear-catching chord progressions and even includes piano roll examples with variations. A great complement to this is Chapter 5 which dives further into music theory and composition. Chapter 3: “Creating Your Signature Sound” provides a necessary context to music production that most books neglect; asking simple yet necessary questions like “Why should you create a signature sound?” And then following it up with actionable methodology with “Crafting you signature sound with FL Studio’s stock sounds” set the book apart. I also appreciate the interactive nature of the book with exercises after each chapter to facilitate and reinforce what I’ve read. This book is also valuable outside of simple production. Chapter 8 “How to Get Records Placed So They Land on Billboard Charts “ alone is worth having this book in your library. It includes life advice on how to navigate the industry and protect your most valued asset: your music catalogue - as well as discussing best practices for developing a network with “Two Approaches to Success”. Chris’ high - level view of the music business is unique and without it could take one years to acquire similar understanding. In conclusion, if you’re looking to dive deeply into FL Studio, or seeking deeper understanding of Music Theory, or of the ins and outs of the industry you will find true value in this book. ... show more

  • A great guide for a newcomer to FL Studio
I've been a FL Studio user for nearly 20 years now, and this book covers all the essential workflow elements that you would normally pick up along the way through the natural learning curve of your journey with this DAW. It's very extensive and in-depth, but in a way to where you won't get lost along the way. Anybody new to digital composition and wanting to start with FL should have no problem finding their footing with this guide. I'd also like to note that if you are decently seasoned with FL, a lot of the DAW specific things here will probably be second nature to you and going over things you already know or figured out. However, it can be a sort of "short cut" for the learning curve to a newcomer. The non-specific things discussed can be applied to your workflow regardless if you're a FL user or any DAW user at all because it covers the philosophy of the fundamentals of music making. Overall, a great way to become knowledgeable on this DAW if you've never tried before! ... show more

  • Good--looking forward to the updated version for FL Studio 2024.
Not the publisher's fault that FL Studio has already upgraded to a new version. Most of this information will work perfectly well with the FL Studio 2024. If you're the type that likes to know what you're going to do before you do it, or if you're the type of person who jumps right in but then wants information on what they did after the fact...a book like this has your answers. ...except on the changes to the new version. ... show more

  • Fresh ideas. Excellent information for everyone.
I love learning everything I can about each DAW out there, and I have to say I enjoyed following along with what the author had to teach. From start to finish, I was happy with the information and attention to detail. Learn how to stay organized by building templates and get a better feel for your plug-ins as the author works to give you everything necessary to create and mix music. When you get into the book's heart, much of the author's ideas come to life, and you can feel the plug-ins work to your advantage. You can take everything you learn and then expand onward onto other DAWs. The limit to how much you can learn from this informative book depends on the person. Take advantage of how much information you will receive by adding this book to your collection. Much love to the author, who adds a little extra at the end for anyone wanting to learn how to be heard. Getting your ideas out to the masses will take time and effort so make sure to check this one out. ... show more

  • terrible illustrations
I'm only a couple of chapters in. The book is well organized and the author has a very intense style that I kind of like. But the illustrations (which appear on every page) are of such low quality that it's often impossible to clearly make out what the author is referring to. Everything is rendered in washed out shades of grey, black, and grey/black blues that make it extremely difficult to see quickly as you read( some items referred to will be two to three millimeters large). The references to various drop down menu's etc. are especially distressing because it's impossible to read what's actually written on them. It's absolutely ridiculous that a book written by an author so obsessed with doing meticulous high quality work is printed like a cheap comic book. ... show more

  • Mixing Music for success.
One of the main differences between this book and others is the emphasis on production success. It details how to use the studio to mix music but leaves out some of the basics in favor of professional production. This is not a fault, just a recommendation that you should have some experience with FL studio before moving on. The emphasis is not on the original creation of music within this venue but through taking items that exist and then modifying the digital structure for best success. The author includes a lot of his own personal success trips and practices, I always find this type of information immensely helpful. ... show more
