Description

If you are thinking about cleaning up that old South Bend Lathe that was given to you by your grandfather and has been sitting in your garage, this manual is what you will need to get the job done. " A Guide to Renovating the South Bend Lathe 9" Model A, B & C and Model 10k " is our brand new soft cover, 106 page shop manual which is fully illustrated with over 300 B&W photographs plus step-by-step maintenance instructions for the standard South Bend workshop lathes that were produced in large numbers between 1939 and the late 1980's. As you will notice, this is not a fuzzy Xerox reprint of an older existing manual that you see on line frequently. This newly published book was produced over the last two years specifically with the South Bend Lathe enthusiast in mind and it addresses the most commonly asked questions and methods for how to renovate a used machine tool. Even though South Bend ceased production of these fine quality lathes years ago, there are still thousands of servicable lathes sitting out there in home shops, small businesses, schools and machinery dealers. This book takes the guess work out of what to do if you find one and decide to purchase it. The details include the sequence for disassembling, cleaning, reassembling and adjusting the critical components of the 9" Model A, B, and C horizontal drive lathes plus the 10k (or "light 10" model). Additional infomation is included for evaluating and purchasing a used SBL if you are not lucky enough to already own one and we have a section on refinishing industrial machinery. The typeface of the manual is two points larger than normal for those of us who prefer to work at the bench without reading glasses. The instructions are very straight forward and no prior machinery rennovation experience is required. The manual also includes a list of resources for vintage SBL owners as well as parts references, tool requirements, lubrication guides and material specifications. If you have a Southbend lathe, don't miss your chance to pick up a complete guide for a very reasonable price. PLEASE NOTE: This manual does not cover the 10L or "Heavy Ten" South Bend Lathe since they are two distinctly different designs. If you have a 10L or larger industrial lathe, please check out our other manuals. Read more

  • Great book
Very informative book!

  • Very helpful in rebuilding my model 9-A lathe!
There are many pictures to aid you with disassembling and reassembling the various lathe components. There was emphasis placed on critical areas to watch out for such as left-hand screws. Really well thought out.

  • Some really great tips in the book...
I bought a 1937 South Bend lathe, model 9C for a great price. I am restoring it and found that most of the lathe is pretty simple to take apart and put back together. However, there are a few places that I was unaware of a special tool that is needed or about some helpful hints to make it easier to put back together. This book covered all of that. It also has pointers about repainting. There are some spots of the process that could be explained better; but heck, if you have taken on the project of restoring one of these lathes, then you must be mechanically inclined enough to figure out those areas. Overall I am happy with the book and how it has helped me. It also shows you how to maintain the lathe. The photos are high resolution and show exactly what needs to be done. The text is a large size, so people with some vision problems can read it well. This book was obviously written by people who have rebuilt several of these lathes, so the information is reliable. The same people who provide the book also sell rebuild kits, bearings, and special tools for these older lathes. I bought both the rebuild kit and the spanner screwdriver bit, both were good quality. However, I bought the spanner pin wrench right from Amazon. ... show more

  • good starting point
Its a pretty manual, however I think it would be nice if they covered some of the easy upgrades that can be done to these old lathes. Like replacing the fiber washer on the spindle under the take up nut, with a radial roller bearing.

  • Valuable Resource
Worth every cent. I bought a South Bend 9A that needed to be torn down, cleaned and repaired in some spots. This book has very good pictures with call outs and arrows. Walks through disassembly and re-assembly step by step not just "reverse steps to assemble".

  • Great Book -- Extremely Detailed As It Should be!
Very detailed information that I hope will help me removating my much earlier South Bend lathe. My lathe was manufactured in 1911 (I guess it's a Model 1910?) and is much simpler than the 9-inch lathe covered by this book, but this book is great!
