    • You need to balance your blades!
If you want to stop the shaking and shimmying of your riding mower every time you engage the blades, you need to balance your blades! Even if you don't care so much about how sharp your blades are when mowing, you still need to sharpen and balance your blades for the sake the longevity of your mower so it doesn't shake itself into an early mechanical grave. Using this tool is very easy. Remove and clean the blade with a steel brush, then lay the blade flat on this tool and it works as a balance. Whichever side of the blade sinks lowest is the heaviest and that's the side you need to grind. Repeat until balanced. Simple as that. I tried these out today and they worked very well. I like this method much better than the old redneck method of balancing the blade on a nail. This tool is much more accurate and much easier to use with blades that have non-round holes. My mower has the star shaped holes and this tool works much better than trying to balance them by any other means. You have to admire the genius of this simple and inexpensive tool when you take into account that there are exotic tools of this sort that have expensive bearings and cost upward of one hundred dollars. These little blade balancers are really cool. Such a simple concept that is so easy to execute but works great. Balanced blades are a must if you hate unnecessary vibration. It’s also hard on your deck bearings on a rider. This nifty little device makes it easy to balance them when sharpening blades. Its use is pretty self explanatory so I won’t go into all that here but I will say that this thing works great! My neighbor had some blades that have been bugging me all season when he mows. It sounded like the deck was about to fly apart so I offered a free sharpening and used this little balancer and like magic all that rattling went away. He was majorly impressed and had no idea a blade needed to be balanced. He was just using a hand grinder without taking them off. One other thing this balancer does is it makes a nifty little bell to play with. When tapped it rings out loud and clear with a sustained tone that slowly drifts away. These are made of metal so they should technically last a lifetime or more if you can keep track of the two pieces. They are separate and one of them could be misplaced easily enough. So save yourself some aggravating vibration and wear and tear on your deck bearings and order one of these today. Great product. ... show more

Works well enough for the job. The accuracy can vary depending on the inside of the cone, so some slight adjustment or note of this might be necessary. As another reviewer pointed out, if you are trying to balance the star shaped blades, which does work, you need to be extra precise when you lay them down on the edge as there isn't a whole lot of room for error. ... show more

Balancers work great for keeping blades balanced while sharpening which keeps down blade vibration while cutting. Very nice that you get 2 for your tool box.

    • Perfect solution for often overlooked problem
I mow about 2 acres with a zero turn commercial grade riding mower. Commercial means the blades are thick and spin at some crazy rpm to cut grass at higher ground speeds. Thick blades times 3 means they aren't cheap. Last 3 were just over $80, so resharpening saves money. And because of their high speed rotation, balancing the blades makes as much sense as balancing you car's tires. If you've ever experienced a out of balance tire, you know it makes for a loud, shaky and potentially unsafe ride. Kinda works the same on your mower, except you feel the resulting vibrations from unbalanced blades in the steer handles, and in the seat of you pants. I imagine it's also not good for the spindle bearings, or the rest of the drive system either. So sharpen the blades, use these handy bells and grind off a little more as needed so your blades are balanced good as new. My blades have a star shaped hole at the balance point, and these cones work just fine with them. Worth the purchase price. The 2 pack also has each in its own box so they're less like to lose when stored in the box. ... show more
