  • I have the darndest time transferring measurements around a corner. Not any more! See why...
I keep bumping into situations where I need to make a mark on material for further work, but can't put the mark on the face where it's needed. I am able to put a mark on another face, but then I have to figure out how to make a corresponding mark around a corner where needed. I typically use a T-Square, but that often is a disaster because I can't keep it from flopping around, especially when I go to make the needed mark, and that ruins an accurate transfer of the mark. Let me give you an example. I had to mount a good quality bathroom cabinet to the wall, and make holes to let the plumbing through. This cabinet had a back. I'd normally measure the plumbing on the wall, then measure the cabinet, hope that I took into account concerns for the floor, then I would make a template, use the template to make some marks on the cabinet, then drill some small holes and put the cabinet up to the wall to see how close I got to what's needed. I would then make corrections, enlarge the holes, then fix the enlarged holes, then... well, you get the idea. When I saw this 3D square was available for review, I figured I would give it a try. I checked that the floor was flat, and that the angle of the wall was the same all across where the cabinet was to go. Both were good enough. Then I placed the cabinet beside the protruding plumbing, and marked on the side of the cabinet where the plumbing touched. I did this on the right side of the cabinet for the hot water, on the left side of cabinet for the cold water, and I eyeballed where to make a mark for the drain. Using this square, I confidently transferred the marks on the sides of the cabinet around to the back. With a level I then snapped chalk lines and I had the heights of the centers of holes I had to drill. I made a template by shoving paper onto the copper stubs, so they punched right through, and used a pencil to make a rubbing where the gaping maw of the drain line was. Then I taped the template to the back of the cabinet, using the snapped chalk lines to align the centers of the holes. I then drilled 3/8" holes where indicated, lined the cabinet up in front of the plumbing for the first time, and eyeballed my accuracy. I was well enough on center, and all this got done quickly, too. I know this 3D square can also be used to quickly and accurately draw angles for assured mitering without need for a miter box. It also has holes that make it very easy to scribe lines parallel to a straight edge, to mark where stock or an edge needs to be cut down to. For my use these are bonus features. Being able to quickly and accurately transfer a measured mark from the side to the back of a cabinet was enough for a 5-star review. That a mechanical pencil with a 30-piece pack of 0.7mm lead is included is yet more of a bonus. A small hex key is included to help you assemble this 3D square, but I found it unnecessary because mine came completely assembled. I was going to throw out the box it came in, but it won't be convenient to store without a box to hold the somewhat odd shape, and the box keeps the square safe from falls where an impact could dent the aluminum it's made of. The square is 5" long in one dimension, 4" long in another, and 3-1/2" long in the third. It's small but very useful. When transferring a mark around a corner, like I described above, you will use the 4" and 3-1/2" dimensions. This square hugs the cabinet's edge, wraps around the corner from side to back and holds its posture firmly, making transferring a mark effortlessly accurate. I hope my success in using this 3D square has been of help to you in your selection, and I wish you luck in work you do. ... show more

  • I love it
4 x 5 Inch 3D Multi Angle Measuring Ruler, Aluminum Alloy 0-90 Degree Protractor Woodworking Square with 0.7 mm Mechanical Pencil and Quick Angle Pin for Layout Measuring Tool It can be nearly impossible to accurately transfer lines around the edge of a board using a traditional carpenter square. Not anymore. This protractor woodworking square makes it a breeze. I’ve used it to help cut some 6x6 posts and now I have nice, accurate lines to follow. The included mechanical pencil is an added benefit. I usually use a carpenter’s pencil, but they are pretty thick and are not very accurate. The mechanical pencil is much more accurate with it’s 0.7 mm lead. I’m very happy I ordered this square. ... show more

  • Brilliant design, well tooled shop accessory.
BEST THING ABOUT IT: allows for 90 degree line continuation around corners ADDITIONAL LIKES: vertical edge provides better pivot point, 1/16th inch increments, easy read, built-in pin storage WORST THING ABOUT IT: lacks case ADDITIONAL DISLIKES/CONCERNS: only 4” in length, little challenging to find good storage location since it is “3D” CATEGORICAL GRADING Presentation/Packaging: A Quality/Craftsmanship/Materials: B Price/Value/Worth: A Functionality/Utility/Versatility: A Instructions/Ease-of-Use/Comfort: A Marketing vs Reality: B (Where “C” = Average) As many others have commented, this device is great from continuing marking around a 90 degree angle It has many other uses, however, which the manufacturers do a good job of itemizing in. the ‘Application’ section of their instruction booklet (which itself is unusual these days): 1) Draw vertical lines on 2 adjacent faces (excels at this) 2) Scribe parallel lines in 1/16th increments (excels at this) 3) Quickly draw 90 and 45 degree lines 4) Marks 25-80 degree angles at 5 degree increments 5) Use the angle pin to scribe 22.5, 30, 45, 60, 67.5 and 75 degree angles 6) Ruler 7) Square It does all these with ease. IS IT WORTH IT?: Given its versatility, I’d say yes. If they’d make a larger sizes, I’d buy one of them. *PRECISE RATING: 4 RECOMMENDATION: If you ever have need to mark around corners/on two surfaces, I’d feel comfortable recommending adding one of these to your tool collection/workbench. (As always, I will report back if there are any durability issues with additional use.) PHOTOS: 1) Measurement accuracy compared to gold standard 2) Assessing squareness 3) Confirming 45 degree angle *Rating scale: 5 = definitely buy again, happy to have it (exceptional in several characteristics,) 4 = probably buy again (decent job of doing what I need, excels in one or two characteristics) 3 = perhaps buy again after researching options (functions OK, looks OK, decent quality, average life expectancy but no outstanding characteristics) (in other words, average) 2 = would not buy again (low end/below average merchandise and/or service, but not totally worthless) 1 = sorry I bought it the first time (poor performance in several characteristics, no redeeming characteristics) Characteristics considered: Presentation/Packaging, Quality, Craftsmanship, Materials, Functionality, Utility/Versatility, Instructions, Ease-of-Use, Comfort, Value. ... show more

  • a nifty, niche tool
4 x 5 Inch 3D Multi Angle Measuring Ruler, Aluminum Alloy 0-90 Degree Protractor Woodworking Square with 0.7 mm Mechanical Pencil and Quick Angle Pin for Layout Measuring Tool This is quite a niche tool. At first I thought I could get away with using a typical carpenter’s square. After a few days I realize how nice it would have been to have a third angle to the tool. This one makes line-making on corners so much easier. The slots with different holes for drawing straight lines at 1/16 inch increments simplified a lot as well. Those holes won’t work with every pencil out there, thus the mechanical pencil or a drafting pencil would come in handy. I am using this to build a bookcase and all my corners are perfect 90s. I do wish this came in a 6 inch version but the 3 inch for now works fine. Overall I don’t think it is a tool everyone needs but those making simple DIY work at home with wood may find this really helpful. I find I use it more often than I expected. I recommend this. ... show more
