Description

For whisky makers, choosing a cask is crucial : its size and wood type determine the smell, the taste, the attack and sustain of the whisky. This explains why there are so many varieties of whisky. At J.N Guitars, we believe that producing whisky and making a guitar are similar crafts as the shape of the body and the selected wood species give the instrument a specific sound and character. CASK therefore emerged as an obvious name for our Cigar Box Guitars.

  • Great Sound, Great Build Quality
Style: Puncheon
I am very satisfied with my new JN Guitars Cask Puncheon. It played great out of the box. While other people have complained about the build quality of the Cask Puncheon, I had no issues. All of the frets were smooth, and there were no blemishes on the body. The action seems just right. It was very playable right out of the box. The sound quality is fantastic! With the resonator it’s about twice as loud as my baritone ukulele. It sounds great either strummed or finger picked. The sustain on it is unbelievable. The neck is as wide as that on my baritone ukulele, which was a relief since I was expecting a narrow, guitar-width neck. Not mentioned anywhere that I’ve seen is that the neck is radiused. The slight curve makes it easier to barre chords. I wholeheartedly recommend the JN Guitars Cask Puncheon. ... show more

  • Fun but very stiff action
Style: Puncheon
The media could not be loaded. I can’t complain too much about the action though because it is a pretty inexpensive instrument which means that it will be cool to take places I wouldn’t want to take my nice ukuleles. It actually sounds pretty good and holds its tuning well. It sounds very banjo like and It’s also really loud so even though it doesn’t have any electronics, it would only need them in the loudest of situations. I was going to return it because since it doesn’t have a way to plug it in I really can’t play it professionally but my husband was annoyed that I bought it and doesn’t like the way it sounds but I enjoy playing certain songs on it (see my video) so I decided to keep it! About my only real complaint is that being of the female persuasion the square pointy upper left corner digs into a tender area, if you know what I mean. Overall it’s a pretty cool instrument. ... show more

  • Not real thrilled with this guitar
Style: Hogshead
First off, the guitar (J.N. Cask Hogshead model) came well boxed. It also came with a nice padded black soft case. What I didn't like is that this guitar is made in China... says so right on the tag. The "J.N. logo looks to be handwritten on with a metallic silver sharpie. Also, right out of the box, the action on this guitar was SUPER high! UGH! Intonation on all four strings was way off. Guitar does not resonate very well, has a more muted tone... could be just poor quality strings, or something going on at the nut. Bridge is floating, NOT fixed. I removed the cover to adjust the truss rod to try and correct some of the extreme bow in the neck, but the truss rod was set in crooked and getting the hex rod in there to turn it is all but impossible, as the truss rod opening is partially covered due to the crooked placement. Wood cavity looks rough and like someone had previously messed with the truss rod. Fretboard is bone dry. You can see this in my photo. One last thing: alternate tunings on this guitar sound horrible... it has a VERY narrow tuning range. All in all, I'm really disappointed. I absolutely DO NOT recommend this guitar. ... show more
