  • The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
The media could not be loaded. This wood lathe is similar to quite a few other low-cost lathes of this size that have similar looks and features. It might be the kind of beginner's bench lathe you'd buy to set off on your wood turning journey. It's low in cost, has a three-tier variable speed system powered by a very adequate ¾ HP. motor and it comes with all the basic items to start turning. All you'll need are turning gouges/tools and some appropriately sized pieces of wood. THE GOOD: It's solid....very solid! Weighing around 80lbs., this lathe is a beast to lift and move around. The four rubber feet at each corner of the cast-iron frame makes sure it won't go anywhere. The motor and drive system are quiet and powerful. Speed is adjustable anywhere from 650 rpm to almost 4000 rpm. The thee stages of turning speed – low, medium and high are achieved by manually adjusting the drive belt and pulley system. If you want to move from low speed (650-1450 rpm) you must remove the belt access covers, slacken the belt tension and move the belt onto either the medium or high speed set of pulleys. While running, the speed is indicated on the digital LED speed indicator and the speed is adjustable from slower to faster within esch speed tier you select. This lathe is well machined. Everything is tight fitting and accurate. Parts fit together well. While running, there is zero vibration, shake or wobble. Moving the tailstock to meet the headstock center, the two points meet together precisely. (see photo). The size is perfect for a beginner. It's advertised as being able to turn wood up to 18 inches long and 12 inches in diameter – although in practice, it's probably slightly smaller than that. The head and tail stock are fitted with standard-sized threads and tapers, which can accommodate a wide range of off-the-shelf chucks and faceplates. The price. It's now priced at $305! - Very affordable.! THE BAD: The packaging/boxing!...... Absolutely terribly boxed and packaged for shipping. For the weight, this is the worst way I have ever seen a heavy item being sent out for delivery. It's a miracle the machine I received survived the journey and now runs well. The lathe arrived sitting in a thin styrofoam cradle which was inside a thinish cardboard box. That's it! Who thought that it could survive shipping across country with hardly any protection.... it boggles my mind. Remember.... this lathe is cast-iron which is brittle and easily broken. At the very least, it ought to have been crated or bolted to its own fitted wooden palette. It arrived on my doorstep with one end of the cardboard box smashed and ripped open - the foam cradle was in multiple pieces and parts were damaged. The LED speed indicator box was hanging off by its wires. Its holding screws bent. It took me a while to get the bent screws out, put the unit together and find new screws and washers. THE UGLY: The casting. The main iron frame is poorly casted. It's rough in places and whoever used the angle-grinder to smooth over the rough spots should have kept going. It could have been made to look a lot nicer that it is. Paint didn't hide the poor finish. The parts that matter though, such as the machined lathe bed and stock heads are in complete contrast. The 6 inch tool rest is also very ugly. It's not well cast or finished, It's rough, bumpy and uneven. I plan on replacing it with a set of quality tool rests of various lengths (6, 9 and 12 inches) that have 5/8ths stems. OTHER NOTES: A set of 'instructions' are included that are really just a parts list, safety instructions and a diagram of the belt and pulley system. Also in the box are some allen keys, a tool to remove the tight-fitting taper, a pair of goggles and a wrench to tighten the head stock. Overall, my opinions of this wood lathe from LEUMUAS, now that it is up and running well on my bench, are actually very good. It does work very well, and I'm excited to make some turning projects! I have a number of saved tree branches and boughs from my garden maple, apple and birch trees - just for this occasion. I am very fortunate to be a member of Amazon's Vine Program so I can receive this lathe at no cost to me and comment on my findings. Otherwise I think I would have probably returned it as the packaging was abysmal and it did need repair. Or would I have returned it? For me the fix was easy and after a week of testing it, I am more than happy! It's a very solid, smooth-running machine. To be competitive in the wood turning market though, I hope that LEUMUAS will improve their casting quality control and upgrade their packaging/shipping ! ... show more
