  • Simple and accurate
Ever drop your car off for an oil change or brakes, or whatever, and then get that guy on the other end of the phone telling you that you need new tires and he can get you [insert tire name here] for only [insert amount you don’t want to spend here]? Well, these gauges can help with that. They are super simple to use and accurate based on my comparison with a digital caliper. The numbering on the gauge is small, BUT, small writing notwithstanding, it is also color coded - so if you are in the red, ya really don’t need the number, you need tires. Else, take a photo with your phone and then zoom in (just sayin’) - but what you don't need to take is the word of the dude on the phone. ... show more

  • Does its job easily
What is there to say? It measures your tire depth. Very easy to use, and the different colors can help you tell if your tires need to be replaced or not. Be sure to check your tires before you bring your vehicle in for service, as they may say you need new tires when you actually don't!

  • Clever design, and easy to use once you know how
This is a mechanically simple and effective tread gauge. You get two of them in a package. Overall, I like it a lot, and for the price, it's an unbeatable value. The color coded depth indicator bar tells you at a glance if your tires are good (green), are ready for replacement (yellow) or are dangerously worn out (red). There's just enough resistance to hold the bar reading in place as you remove the gauge from the tire to get a better look at the measurement. The readings are shown in 1/32 increments all the way up to a full inch of tread depth. Note that It's harder to read the numbers than it would be on a gauge with a digital display. That's partly because the text is small, but also because the manufacturer chose to print black text on green and red backgrounds. The markings would be a lot easier to read if the text was white. The legibility of the gauge is why I deducted a star. According to research from the NHTSA, vehicles with 4/32 or less of tread depth are significantly more likely to get into tire related accidents. The legal limit for tread wear is 2/32. With these two data points as our anchors, here's some quick guidance on how to properly read the gauge: The green zone extends from just above 5/32 to a full inch. So as long as the gauge is showing green, your treads are good. The middle of the yellow zone is at 4/32. So the yellow zone is really the point at which you should replace your tires. The red zone extends from 0 to 3/32. If you're anywhere in the red zone, you're either very close to, or have exceeded, the legal limits for tire wear. Get those tires replaced now! ... show more

  • A good check on the mechanic who always wants to sell you tires
Just as the price would suggest there is not much to these. One would think that the wear bars would be sufficient to judge when to replace tires, but they never seem to fully level out with the tread. As someone who replaces my tires one at a time and generally pushes the wear as far as I am comfortable, I thought that this tool would be a good double check. It is nice to be confident that I am being safe without wasting additional useful life of my tires. ... show more

  • Great gadget for quick measurements...
This is a nice, cost-effective set of depth gauges for tires and a variety of other shallow channels. The measurements are easy to read, accurate, and each tool is nice and compact to fit in a glove box or tool box drawer. The depth gauge may have a tendency of shifting up or down while you're measuring, if you're not careful...but, with a couple tries and a gentle hand, they provide consistent, accurate measurements. Altogether, these are a good find for all of a few bucks. ... show more

  • Works as described ... but...
It works exactly as described/intended, and I would give it 5 stars, if it weren't for an issue that's not solely mine. The numbering on this is Extremely small... for my eyes... and although I'm absolutely certain it will be a perfectly acceptable solution for most... there are a LOT of us out here that require a 'crutch' when it comes to reading text this tiny. I like the overall size but I would gladly sacrifice some additional space in my tool box for something that doesn't require another device to use. I Hope this Helps. ... show more

  • Great value! Confirmed it was time to rotate my tires!
I knew I was nearing the routine maintenance interval to rotate my tires on my new F150 Lightning. Using this gauge, I was able to quantify the difference in tread depth. Basically confirmed that I needed to slow down in corners lol, and that it was time to rotate the tires for sure to even out the wear! Since it was a 2 pack, put the other one in my wife's car. ... show more
