  • Lamp cord for the win! lol
Size: 12AWG Color: 100 Feet (White)
I just received a 100 foot roll of white 12 AWG speaker wire. If you include the two rolls of black GearIT 14 AWG I purchased last year, along with 16 and 18 AWG rolls of speaker wire from othe brands, including Amazon, I want to take a moment to get real. 1. Copper Clad Aluminum (CCA) wire, from an engineering perspective, is a lower cost alternative in comparison to pure copper wire. It's not necessarily better or worse, because it's all about the application and installation. If you aren't going to push a lot of current through your speaker wire, bigger won't guarantee better sound quality. If you compare 12 AWG Romex solid conductor, this GearIT 12 AWG CCA wire, and OFC stranded conductor 99.9% pure copper, at 10 watts RMS? The copper may sound better, but not simply because it's copper, but because of the multiple fine strands wound together to create 12 AWG in diameter. I've never seen "The Skin Effect" occur in speaker wire, since it is more relevant in higher frequencies, like radio frequencies. However, playback of audio is in essence multiplexed, and fine hair-like strands can sometimes be beneficial. Since my wire is for a Class D 50 Watt RMS per channel amp, which is 100 Watts Peak, or 5 Amps Peak at 4 Ohms, CCA works for me. 2. In general, speaker wire is an industry-wide con game. You have to pay a factory extra to re-tool their equipment to meet true American Wire Gauge Standard Diameters. China uses the Metric System. Most countries use the Metric System. Companies who don't want to pay extra, pay for a Metric diameter that is close to the AWG target diameter, and then round-up. They never round-down, because, again, they're paying extra because the Metric size is bigger than the target AWG size. Unfortunately, too many manufacturers will offer a Metric diameter around 13.4 AWG, and then thicken the insulator. It is what it is when you deal below a certain price point. 3. Before you choose CCA for its price, or OFC because you like to crank things loud, you should go back and look at the technical specifications of your speakers. Some expensive loudspeakers claiming flat frequency responses may have a sensitivity rating of 83 dB. Some of more affordable speakers for casual listening may have a sensitivity rating of 88 or 89 dB. If you're speakers have a low sensitivity rating, then you either want, maybe, 10 AWG CCA, or just buy OFC. My cheap-o everyday casual listening speakers list 89 dB, and the slight increase in resistance from CCA can help improve the amp's dampening factor. Resistance is NOT the only variable you should be focused on when choosing the best speaker wire for YOUR needs! 4. CCA wire can be installed successfully outside, but you must take precautions. Grab some silicon caulk, or self-fusing waterproof tape. It's not just water or moisture. Humidity is not your friend. Copper and aluminum are dislike metals, and when exposed to moisture or humidity, the two metals will experience a galvanic reaction, or response. Aluminum is pretty reliable outdoors, since the outer surface oxidizes to act as protective armor. Moisture, along with copper and aluminum touching each other, and the aluminum will corrode into a powder-like substance. Seal the speaker terminals after connecting the wire, and seal over every clamp or staple, in case you may have unintentionally broken through the insulator. Generally speaking, not just the GearIT speaker wire that I've tested, but pretty much all low-priced CCA speaker wire... kind of sucks. The GearIt relies upon a few, thick strands of CCA, which makes the wire stiff, and not even a decent quality CCA speaker wire. Only Amazon's CCA speaker wire used finer strands. In the early 90' I used to buy and re-sell rope braided OFC speaker wire, and CCA for people on a tight budget. Pyramid's 12 AWG was actually 14 AWG with a vey thick clear insulator around each conductor, so on the outside it would be similar in size to other brands. I have, I can, and I do, solder CCA speaker wire when necessary. It's not hard, or that complicated. There are two options for the same trick, solder flux, or rubbing alcohol. You can buy solder with flux inside it, but it by itself takes too long. You're heating two different types of thermal masses, without melting the insulator. Extra flux, or first a wipe then dip with rubbing alcohol. The cleaner the exposed surfaces, the better, and quicker, the flux and solder will adhere. Outdoors, buy the thinnest solder you can with flux inside it, and wind the solder around the joint you are trying to solder together. You will drip and waste solder, but plenty of flux to solder the wires quickly together. Even solder, especially solder with lead, will corrode from moisture or humidity, so remember to seal anything exposed when installing CCA outdoors. So, I bought the white 12 AWG, which is disappointing with all the black lettering and the black stripe down one side. If they had kept the lettering just on one side, you could ide the srtipe while running it along white walls or ceilings. Then again, I expected the wire to be closer to 14 AWG than 12 AWG, stiff, and something I may have to eventually paint over if it irritates me. I am disappointed, but not even the least bit surprised that the wire I received lived up to all my negative expectations. For two 8 foot and 14 foot runs to rear and side surround speakers, and I don't crank up the volume, it works. See, the hippie generation during the time of Woodstock had it right all along. If you wanted stranded copper speaker wire cheap, just buy lamp cord. Then double or triple it up to make it thicker. lol ... show more

  • Great audio cable for the price
Size: 12AWG Color: 200 Feet (Black)
I used this cable to run speakers in my home theater. I decided on 12ga over 14 due to the bigger speakers that I have along with wanting to be able to fish it inside of the walls. I had to pull fairly hard on the cable to get it where it needed to be and there was no damage, or fear of it snapping. So far it has been great and has done everything that I have wanted it to. One thing to note though is that the cable has a thick sheath and there’s a lot more wire than your standard 14 gauge. If your equipment has the spring connections this might not be the best choice. All of my speakers and the receiver use the screw down terminals or banana clips. ... show more
