  • Great fire starters, whether for regular use or for camping or emergencies
I'm always looking for good fire starter to keep in an emergency kit, as well as my usual camping tool bag. At 19 cents per piece, I was excited to give this option a try. The fire starting pieces, which I'll call spools since they appear to be made by spinning wood strands together and coating them with way, are somewhat large, about the size of two marshmallows (another camping must-have for many) stacked end to end. The spools are light, solid in the core but a little compressible on the outer edge. They shed a bit, though if you keep them in a bag you'll be able to contain any pieces that fall off. Overall, while a little large, they should be good additions to a fire kit. The important question is how well they start. To test them, I went straight to a challenging test. I soaked a spool in a cup of water for an hour, using a scrubber pad to keep it underwater since it floats. I then attempted to light it with paper matches, since they have a shorter burn time than wooden match sticks or a lighter. The long soak time and the paper match were intended to simulate a worst case scenario of getting soaked and then trying to start a fire. I shook out the spool and tried to light it. The loose strands burned fine, sizzling along the way, but with three matches I couldn't get the whole thing to stay lit. If pulled apart and shaken out more, it probably would have worked better. I moved to a lighter and gave the flame more time to dry out the water that had made its way into the spool. Eventually it stayed lit and completely burned over the course of several minutes. It would definitely get the job done if you needed to start a fire in wet conditions. Overall, these are pretty effective fire starters. They don't work well when wet, but they are waterproof in that the wood is protected and will stay dry if submerged due to the wax coating. They did well enough in my extreme test that I'm confident they'll work well for any normal use. Recommended. ... show more

  • Must have for a Gravity Smoker!!!
I own a gravity smoker that uses a charcoal chute and wood chucks to cook with. Starting the gravity smoker needs to be lit from the bottom of the charcoal chute, which can only be done though a few certain different ways. I use wood chunks and tumbleweeds to light my smoker and these tumbleweeds do the job perfectly. These tumbleweeds light up quickly and burn for a good amount of time to allow everything else to catch. I have never had a problem lighting any of these tumbleweeds from this seller and can recommend them to anyone looking for a clean burning fire starter. ... show more

  • Long Burn Time, smaller than I expected, but very effective.
I have only tried these in a rocket stove. They should've burnt away quicker if anything. However, I found they lasted a very long time and lit some relatively damp and kindling that is 17 years old very quickly. The kindly was stored under the edge of a shed on the shore of a lake in Maine. I used two of the fire starters and I wasted one because it was not needed. The images in the rocket stove show where I placed them, The burn after 1 and 5 minutes. They were still burning after 10 minutes plus. I was kind of surprised how small the package was for 100 of the Firestarters, but they are very well packed and in a sliding zipper plastic bag. They are made of compressed wood shavings with more wax than wood and are quality fire starters IMHO. ... show more

  • Work great and don’t cost too much
These fire starters work and don’t cost as much as others I’ve used. Very easy to light; caught fire as soon as the flame touched them. At around 18 cents each, I figure starting my charcoal costs me under a dollar. The box of 100 will probably last me a year, since I sometimes cook on the flat-top and it doesn’t need starters. I plan on keeping these inside my shop, because it gets hot enough outside (I’m in Louisiana) that I think these might melt together. All in all, very happy and would certainly buy another box. ... show more

  • Quick and Easy
The only heat in the wintertime here is a woodstove and when it is cold outside you want to be able to start a fire fast! These little tumbleweed bundles are perfect for just that. They burn hot and last long enough to get the kindling going. I love the fact that they are compact and take up little space. In the past I have used brown packing paper to catch my kindling on fire ( and I store the paper in big garbage bags which takes up alot of space) but I think I am spoiled now! Recommend these cool little fire starters ... show more

  • Works great! Compact and easy to pack for camping
These work just as advertised! I had a good fire going in about two minutes in my solostove with two of these in the bottom of a stack of kindling. I wasn't especially careful to cut the wood very small and had no additional tinder, just two of these firestarters. Everything got going nice and quickly! Next time I'll try to use only one and see if I get similar results, that way I can stretch a pack farther, but two of them worked really well. ... show more

  • Works
My husband has been barbecuing for the family recently quite bit. Realizing that using lighter fluid, the fumes and material in that fluid is not very good for your food. He wanted to try a firestarter product but is a little bit more chemical free but effective. These little tumbleweeds definitely helped start the fire. They are about the size of a golf ball each one and we put it close to the top of the charcoal we did used to because it was a very windy day, but the fire started and was up and running within 10 minutes or so. This comes with 100 little tumbleweeds for a little under $20. I do think it’s kind of expensive and I probably will look to see if I can find a better value for my dollar but if not, this is a great option. ... show more
