I haven't tried them yet but I'm sure that they will be great.

  • Surprisingly good for an unknown brand.
Size: Strength 3.0
I’m a world-traveled professional musician as a pianist, but an amateur reed player since I was in grade school. I play 2.5s and 3.0s on clarinet, and usually 2.5s on soprano sax. Because of my amateur level of playing, I’m not as good at noticing poorer reeds in a batch. In a box of 10, I usually reject one or two, and I only rejected one from the batch of ten Sovvid reeds I received, so that’s within my standard statistical model. I have trouble with low Bb on the horn, so that’s a good test for me, and I did as okay as I usually do with most of these reeds (I tested six). Throughout the range, my experience was as good on typical mass market reeds. So base your decision on comparative price and Amazonian convenience. ... show more

  • Surprisingly Warm and Responsive
Size: Strength 3.0
I’m a professional reed player (clarinet, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, concert flute, traditional (keyless) Irish flute). While I have been playing reeds from a mainstream manufacturer for over 50 years, I’m often curious about other sources. I normally play a moderate (3) reed, adjusting as needed. My first impression of these Soviod reeds is that the stock seemed somewhat old and dried out, since two arrived with split tips, not an impressive start. Next, I sorted out the reeds based on the symmetry of the cut. I examine this by holding each reed up to a light and looking for a smooth transition from center to outside. Most of these reeds were cut fairly consistently, but several had dark veins running from base to tip, which usually result in a lack of control, increased tendency to squeak. Also, the cut surface is unfiled, which the manufacturer lists as a feature for ease of playing, yet every reed that I have ever played from any other manufacturer has been filed. It’s not a big deal, since I have a reed file for adjustments, and always could smooth this out. Still, I hope that I don’t get any splinters! I selected one for a tryout. My next test is to see how well sealed the reed is, by putting the base in my mouth and trying to suck air through it. Why do this? Well, saliva actually digests the reed material, and also transfers mouth fauna. The better sealed the reed’s cut surface, the longer the reed is going to play. Surprisingly, the selected Sovoid reed is rather tight, better than many of my usual reeds out of the box. Or maybe that’s because it’s older and dried out? Well, the next step is seal the reed, same way that I do for all my reeds. I soaked the reed in water for a few minutes, then hold the flat side of the reed against an acrylic sheet (happens to be a coaster—I used to have a 2x4 inch glass plate, but that got lost years ago—and gently smoothed the cut side of the reed with my finger. The reed is allowed to dry thoroughly, and then the suck test is repeated. If I still can pull air through the reed, the whole process is repeated until the reed is well and truly sealed. The Sovoid reed only required three cycles to be reasonably well sealed. I usually restrict playing a reed the first time to the low register, but in the interest of getting on with this review, I gave this reed a thorough tryout across the entire range of the instrument. I actually was pleasantly surprised with how well the reed performed. The response was adequate, except for a little hesitance in the low register below G, but that’s also rather normal on my instrument. The reed also allowed maintaining tuning across the entire range. The overall tone was actually rather warm, and wasn't raw in the highest palm notes. Of course, I can’t comment on how long this reed will remain playable, even after my careful preparation. At about $1 per reed, these are a reasonable choice even if only 2 or 3 out of the box of 10 reeds turns out to play as well as this reed that I selected carefully, as described above. ... show more

  • Very good and consistent !
Size: Strength 3.0
I’m a hobbyist and admit I con’t play soprano often. So when I picked up my horn again, I cringed at the boxes of poor reeds I’ve collected, because they are so difficult to play. Then, I got these Sovvid #3 reeds. I was surprised that they were so easy to play. And even though I haven’t played for a long time, these reeds allow me to sound good ! I noticed these reeds worked immediately without having to sand or pre-soak them. They are very consistent. Apparently, the manufacturer has mastered the machining procedures to make excellent reeds with little variability. I would dare say these are even better than the Vandoren reeds I used for various clarinets and tenor sax in the past. ... show more

  • Great for student use.
Size: Strength 3.0
My wife and I are involved with our high school daughters marching band and decided to start buying some "backup" reeds for the students. We gave one of these reeds to an experience student and the feedback was these are good reeds! The student liked this brand better then the brand he has been using for a few years now. Later that same day, the band director heard about the backup reed and he decided to give it a try as well and he is now also a fan of these reeds. I don't know much about reeds for instruments, but if two musicians tell me to get more of these reeds because they like the performance, then they must be good to go! ... show more

  • Plays fine for me
Size: Strength 3.0
These reeds seem to be on the soft side in my opinion. These are size 3 and they feel more like 2.5. Of, course, I could also be off a little. I'm used to size 3 being just a tad more stiff. I just slapped one on and it played freely with little resistance. I like to work my reeds just a tad so I like to get them just a little more stiff so I can shave them down a bit for a perfect setup. I feel like I can take off the roughness and still have a great reed that's not too soft. These also wet real easy so one might not have to soak them for long periods. So far I like them and I can definitely recommend for most any player especially students. I really like the cost to benefit. ... show more

  • Nice Reeds
Size: Strength 3.0
The media could not be loaded. The reeds are good. The sound is stable. They feel good. I filmed a little movie of me playing on one. I'm just a hobbyist, but I've been playing for 48 years. I hadn't heard of the brand, but they make some good reeds.
