Description

The Cole jaws are a very versatile set designed primarily for the re-chucking of bowls to remove chuck marks or to re-shape the bottom of bowls that have already been turned. The Cole Jaws come with a set of extra long mounting screws, which enables you to mount the 50mm, Step, and 100mm jaws onto the face of your Cole jaws, allowing you to do you bowl from start to finish with out changing jaws. All the facilities of the other jaw sets can be fully utilized in conjunction with the Cole jaws. These jaws more than any other really begin to explore the tremendous versatility of the Nova Chuck. However we all know too well that in removing a tenon from a workpiece the jaws tend to mar the surface but with the bumpers on the Cole jaws those hard marks are a thing of the past. The best thing with jaws such as these is you can use both compression or expansion to chuck a workpiece without spending time having to change jaws, readjust the bumpers and so forth.A special woodworm screw (optional) can be used for initial bowl mounting. With this combination of holding methods, it is possible to turn a bowl from rough blank to a completely finished smooth bowl with just this one jaw set. The Chuck Cole jaw combination is the only chucking system to allow such a complete facility without any complex jaw changes or different set ups. There are a number of re-chucking options; false wooden jaws can be added, wooden dowels used or rubber stoppers which are provided with the basic kit.

Just what I needed. Fit my nova chuck perfectly. Item is just as good as any name brand Cole jaw set out there. As others have stated it may not be shiny like name brands but who cares as long as it does what it’s intended to do who cares about whether or not it’s shiny. It’s a tool it’s going to get used and abused. Have not had any issues with those Cole jaw set since I’ve purchased it. I’ve put it through some abuse and it’s still perfect as the day it was made. I highly recommend this set if your looking for cole jaws to finish bowls. Extremely pleased with it. It’s just like Nova jaws but much cheaper. I love it. ... show more

In the interest of full disclosure, as a trusted and unbiased amazon reviewer, I was able to request this product free of charge. I have to say I was a bit hesitant to request these after seeing the 1 and 2 star ratings. However, I am always a bit suspicious when I see a rating w/o a review or a 1 line review. First the stuff I don't like: As mentioned the jaws appear to be cast aluminum. not the nicely machined jaws you usually find. However, this does not affect the functionality of the product. My second gripe is the cost. I feel the current price is too steep given how these appear and how they are made. If the price were lower, I would give them a higher rating. The good stuff: Other than what was already mentioned, I can't find anything wrong with these jaws. I am surprised by the low ratings. They fit precisely on my G3 chuck. When fully closed there are no gaps. There are 8 rubber bumpers which seem decent and that is also a good amount especially for jaws of this size. There are plenty of mounting holes to accommodate all bowl sizes within the maximum capacity of the jaws. I measure about 1/64 of an inch run out from the point of the jaw furthest away from the lathe center. There could also be some run out from the chuck that is contributing to this. I consider this amount of run out to be reasonable. I used about an 8 inch bowl to take these jaws for a spin (apologies for the bad lathe humor). All bumpers gripped the bowls with no gaps. The bowl felt tight. I had a gouge on the outside of the bowl from a bad catch. I used a spindle gouge with a finger nail grind to make gentle shearing cuts which worked just fine. I also ran the lathe at 500 RPM which is the stated maximum speed for the jaws. I did not use tail stock support for this operation. This is not good practice and is not recommended, but I didn't have any problems. But, please don't do this. I then used tail stock support and removed the tenon. Again, I took gentle cuts. When I was down to a small nub, I removed the tail stock and gently cleaned up the bottom of the bowl. I lowered the speed to about 250 RPM and then used a drill with pad sanders of varying grits to finish the outside of the bowl. Everything worked as it should. The quality of the bumpers and attachment screws are good. The jaws positioned easily on the chuck and tightened securely. The very low ratings do not make sense to me. Just some miscellaneous items here that are more of a general nature and not product specific: You have to be very careful with Cole jaws - one slip and you could wind up with a broken finger. Those large areas between the jaws can be problematic. This is something that is true with any jaws of this type. An alternative to Cole jaws would be a Longworth chuck. If you have the time, a router, and a faceplate you can make one very inexpensively. All you need is some plywood and bumpers and fasteners which you can get at any big box store. In my opinion these are a bit safer - you basically have 2 plywood disks that are sandwiched together. If you accidentally hit the rotating edge, you will get hurt but not nearly as badly when compared with the Cole jaws. Another benefit is that you can make these any size you want - you can easily match the size to your lathe capacity.     • Quality compromised slightly in favor of price
The casting is a little sloppy and the plastic bosses are sort of cheap, but it mostly does the job. Things come flying off sometimes, but that may just be the way these sorts of jaws work.
