Description

The ASI178MC is a versatile and highly sensitive monochrome astronomy camera for imaging solar system objects and deep-sky objects through a telescope. The camera incorporates an advanced 7.4mm x 5.0mm CMOS sensor with 6.4 megapixels and 2.4-micron pixel size to help you extract fine detail in astronomical images. This camera is ideal for capturing images of the Moon, Sun (with a safe solar filter, not included), planets, and deep-sky objects. The USB3.0 port offers a fast capture rate of 60 frames-per-second at the full resolution of 3096x2080, and much faster rates at lower resolutions. This is the non- cooled version of this camera. Cooled/pro versions are available separately. NOTE: This camera is best used with a refractor or reflector telescope mounted on a solid equatorial mount that can accurately track the motion of the sky. It is not intended for taking images through the eyepiece of a telescope. This camera produces color images without the need for additional color filters, but you may require additional accessories such as an autoguider, focal reducer, or barlow lens to get the best results. All software and drivers for this camera are available from the manufacturer’s website.

  • Great Astrophotography Camera
Great camera! Even though It’s mostly for planetary, you can get some pretty amazing pics of the brighter DSO’s.

  • Should have bought the more expensive one
I wish I would have bought the higher megapixel model. I thought since I was just starting out, I didn’t want to get too expensive but the more expensive the better quality. Both photos were photoshopped. Also, these images were captured in town, so a lot of light pollution.

  • This seems to be a very good astro camera
I bought this to replace the Sbony 205 camera that I purchased a month ago because the Sbony added false green and red tints to photos of the Moon, and even worse, discolored all but the center of photos of the Sun with a pinkish hue rather than show the orange that actually was and did show in the center of the photo. It wasn't related to edge-darkening of the sun, because that same thing happened even if the edge was in the middle of the frame. After all the rain this last several days, I was finally able to use this camera and am quite happy to report tha the 178 takes nice pictures of the Sun, orange throughout. Have not yet been able to try it on the Moon, but assuming it's going to not have any false color tinting and will complain here if I am wrong! The sensor in the 178 appears to be quite sensitive, At 1/10 of a second and minimal (no) gain, I see Jupiter's moons in the photo with Jupiter itself being a white out. It's either that I have to learn more about using the camera and taking planetary photographs, or I simply have to dial back the exposure some more, I also was able to take a good photo of Sirius. I'm quite happy with this camera! Also...the ZWO ASIstudio software is quite easy to use on my Linux box. ... show more

  • Agena AstroProducts Have to be take off Amazon
Please stay away from this seller, if you ever have to return any item you purchase from them, they will send you an email where they put you in a my word you word position after all threads on all CHARGES they will apply. I have canceled the return and taken the loss, learning the lesson to not to trust Amazon on the product search engine and to take more time reading the previous victims posts on the items. We can loose focus on the reality that we’re really becoming a third wold country. As far as my experience with the product, perfect with the native lens, challenging on the telescope. ... show more

  • Received a Defective Product and Charged a Restocking Fee
I have ordered products from Agena AstroProducts directly and now through Amazon, but no longer will I give them my business. The camera I received was defective with a severe plaid pattern in the images, but to my disbelief, they charged me a restocking fee of $40 when they said they wouldn’t if a defective unit was returned. They say they will test it when received, but they didn’t, but since it was “used” one time, they went against their word. I will no longer do business with a company who disrespects their customers. P.S. I have several astrophotography cameras and know when one is defective. ... show more

  • Do not buy from this seller!!!! Misleading and horrible customer support!
misleading product description and horrible support software on the camera, looked like it was made by a 3rd grader. Had to return it, they charged bogus restocking fees saying there was a fingerprint on the lens when we checked to make sure the item was still brand new and pristine not our fault if you manhandle it out of the box, it was literally put directly back into the box, we opened the item and found it incompatible with our telescope due to misleading information from the seller, buyer beware!!! I would avoid this seller at all costs horrible experience ... show more
