First, there is a angry review here that says the keys don't open. There are little rubber stoppers that hold all the keys closed during shipping. These can all be removed and the instrument functions just fine. I am a multi-instrumentalist with a long history of playing (apropos to this flute review) clarinet, sax, and pennywhistle. Back in college I learned flute in order to play in the sax section in jazz band; they called it "doubling" on flute. I kept it up for awhile, and was given my high school girlfriend's flute, which eventually went into storage. I brought it out after a recent move, and of course it doesn't play at all, it needs a total re-pad and overhaul. Which will cost more than buying a replacement. So I started jonesing to play flute again... Enter this Chinese-made, budget- and entry-level ZEFF brand flute, which I was excited to receive and try out. I didn't need a pro model, I just wanted something to be able to play, and I figured at the price point it would probably be a terrible experience. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised. Once I got the pieces out of the plastic and the rubber stoppers removed, I was able to produce a decent tone almost right away, and was very surprised at how smooth the key action was. Almost every note was significantly sharp, however, well over 40 cents sharp (for the non-musician, that means that if you play with an orchestra or band you will sound very out of tune). I helped this by pulling the mouthpiece section out by about 1/4-1/2"... but in playing around with this, there was some pitch variation from octave to octave. This tuning issue won't be noticeable when playing alone, but even if stocked with better-quality instruments, beginning bands and orchestras struggle with intonation thanks to players who haven't yet learned how to control their instruments. It's made with cupro-nickel, an alloy designed to be moisture-resistant, and it comes a cleaning rod and rag (please wipe out the moisture after every use!) as well as a little pair of gloves, and a decent little carrying case. It would have been nice if it came with a basic "welcome" pamphlet that includes care and maintenance, assembly instructions and a fingering chart, but I guess you can't have everything. One of the hardest things for a parent wanting to introduce their children to playing music when it's time to get an instrument for them. You don't want to blow a bunch of money on something great, only to have the kid lose interest after 3 months... and you don't want to buy a cheap-o instrument that works so poorly that it kills their interest. This Zeff flute seems to be a great way to start your child down the road to flute playing at a budget price. If they seem to really enjoy playing, I'd recommend after a year getting a recommendation from your band director for a better model. ... show more

This is, in my opinion, a nice looking and nice working beginners flute. I got a different one to try awhile back and this one just seems to work better to me for some reason. I'm not a trained flute player so I couldn't tell you what the difference is but I have an easier time getting a better tone out of this one. I think it looks really good and comes in a nice little carrying case with white gloves and a cleaning kit. I guess there was supposed to be a flute stand included as well but I did not have one in my case. If you or your child is interested in learning to play the flute I think this would be a pretty nice starter instrument. You wouldn't break the bank buying it and I think it's good enough to get you a nice start at figuring out how serious you are about the instrument. In other words I think it's a nice stepping stone to an eventual upgrade and I recommend it. ... show more

I have played for 12 years and have my preferred brands but sometimes pick up beginner flutes to test and donate to my local band. This is an excellent starter flute. It comes with a carrying case, cleaning cloth and has wonderful tone. Would really serve a new learner well as it is easy to get a sound on and will last years before needing to upgrade to an intermediate instrument. ... show more

Not the most exceptional flute i have held or used but it is absolutely a beginner practice flute. I cant place my finger on exactly why but it just doesn't feel right. Its entirely possible to play this and learn. If i were buying this for a child it would absolutely be a good starting instrument for anyone who has developed either a passing interest or is beginning to embark upon learning wind instruments. You will save money then buying it from a school, or getting a professional quality one, in the time you use this you will discover if this is the right sound for you or decide to move on to something else. ... show more

I have never played a flute in my life. This one looks nice and seems well made from a novice eye. I do have musical experience with wind instruments. It sounds pleasant enough when I can get a clear note. It fit together easily. Comes with a case and a stand. I have it out for decoration along with a clarinet. I received this item as part of the Amazon Vine program. The flute I received is pretty good. It is well-made and has a silver-plated finish. I have played a few musical instruments (violin, trumpet, piano, etc.) but have never played a wind instrument. The silver-plated flute comes with a decent case, stand, cleaning Kit, gloves and tuning rod. Make no mistake, this is for beginners to help them train and discern if the flute is for them. It works fine but is not made for anything more as it states.
