After soaking it, there are leaves, sticks and other random stuff in it that is NOT moss. Being I have no clue what that stuff is, I'm certainly not putting it in my ball python's enclosure. I'll stick with the reptile store.

I got this to use in my bearded dragon's terrarium for use as a cool, moist retreat from the heat lamp. I was amazed at just how much moss was created when I added water. It's worked well for my bearded dragon and I observed him taking shelter within the moss- so he seems to like it too! I recently purchased a snake and read that sphagnum moss would be an excellent tank medium. I nabbed this brick knowing that it would be more than enough once it was rehydrated - a great value. However, the brick did not come with instructions, and I made the assumption that common sense would be enough. Wrong. After wetting the moss it needed to be rinsed, wrung, and set out to dry to become useable. Which felt very counterintuitive in my opinion. Not only that, but in the days following the whole room reeked of swamp, not the moss I was familiar with using for my plants. Which, oddly enough, is also sphagnum. Lesson learned. Wet what you need, store what you don't, wring it good and mist as needed. Any more and your tank will become cold and damp. Will likely purchase again, but will need to do a bit more research first. ... show more

    • A Hit for Reptile Humid Hides and Nesting Boxes

This little pack of moss puffs up into a massive pillowy poof once water is aded, expanding significantly to the point where I could say it could adequately cover the bottom of a 12" x 18" 10 gallon terrarium. I used it for nesting boxes for a gecko and within a humid hide for a snake, both creatures enjoying their lush and natrual bed. Although the moss held moisture well, the smell of the stuff is quite strong after rehydrating and is comparable to sticking one's nose right into a humid forest floor. In a room that might not be well-ventilated, it can quickly fill and be overwhelming for some people, although I like it myself... it smells like a damp fall evening in a Norwegian forest. The moss is also flat-packed in a very natrual state, with some sticks and large pieces that may need to be broken up or removed prior to use for some smaller critters. There is no offensive highlighter green dye in this moss, making it a clean pick for my reptiles. PRO TIP: The package didn't come with rehydrating instructions, but I soaked the brick in a gallon bucket for an hour, rinsed, soaked again another half-hour, and did a second rinse for cleanliness. This had the moss both fluffy and well-hydrated and made it easier to pick out the sticks. ... show more
