  • Love.
I bought this as a gift, and they absolutely loved it!

  • Disappointment
Looks nice, almost like an antique. Now the bad. 1) Not sure how - but the adjustment changes while using, very aggravating. 2) The grind size is inconsistent _ which may be due to adjustment movement. 3) The handle is not nearly as functional as a standard mill with a rounded hand grip. No comparison to Peugeot which are my go-to grinders. ... show more

  • A little hard to turn. Some observations about some of the comments in other reviews.
Weighing in as a counterpoint to some of the comments. Mine came wrapped in foam and looked perfect. It also had some peppercorns in it. But I really think that they were there as part of a final test. If you look at the second photo of the manual, they even show where the peppercorns come from (Vietnam). I threw them out before putting putting in my own. The other photo shows that the grinding mechanism is made in Germany. The manual says there's a 25 year warranty on the grinding mechanism. I've only had it for days, so I can't comment on the longer term reliability. But it clearly grinds well as much as I've used it. This has been my experience. ... show more

  • Overall a good buy. Beautiful, but inconsistent grind. Not good for salt.
Owned for around 5 years. One of the reasons I chose this over other mills was the ability to grind continuously, and because of the ceramic grinder for sea salt. It works great at grinding continuously, and the ceramic grinder is usually satisfactory at grinding, but the top brass has pitted because of the salt, and I wouldn't recommend buying this for use of salt. Sometimes the grinder doesn't work properly if the pepper has been overloaded in the hopper. The size of the grind isn't always consistent, and there are times the grinding mechanism gets stuck and doesn't adjust when attempting to resize the grind. Lastly, I wish it was bigger and held more pepper. I own two (one was supposed to be for salt, which I no longer use it for), and I constantly find my grinders are empty even with two! Maybe I use an excessive amount of pepper, but just beware you might find you wish you bought a bigger mill. Overall, I do love these and would recommend them for anyone who wants solely a pepper mill. However, don't buy them assuming you can use them for salt. It will ruin the metal at the top of the device. If you use a lot of pepper, you might want to find a bigger mill. ... show more

  • Came with pepper in it? Also grinding is a bit harder than I expected?
I must have gotten one that someone returned, because it had pepper in it. That makes me worried they do not adequately clean their products when someone returns one. I washed it out. It seems to be working okay, but the grinder is a bit harder than I thought it would be. I bench press 300+lbs, and even for me this grinding was not easy. Given the hefty price I expected something smoother. Still, it's a beautiful grinder and does its job. ... show more

  • Great looking grinder
Honestly, I bought this grinder for it's looks, and I love it. In use though, the crank doesn't turn as smoothly as I would like.

  • The Pepper Lovers' Grinder
This is one of the few items I'm willing to slap a full 5 stars on since it met or exceeded all my expectations. As others have extolled repeatedly, this thing smashes the competition in grinding speed and efficacy. I note sporadic complaints about small reservoir size, but it's actually about the same as most other similarly sized grinders, it's just that people don't realize they're actually consuming the pepper that much faster due to the grinding rate. To illustrate, I now have home recipes that call for 2 full tablespoons of fine (particle size ≃0.5㎜), freshly ground pepper. I challenge anyone to use a different grinder to produce that quantity within 5 minutes (without arms falling off). The materials and workmanship are solid, with hard ceramic for both parts of the grinding mechanism, hexagonal metal drive shaft, metal crank and screw-on cap, two thick plastic collars (inside) supporting and aligning the shaft, plastic coarseness control at the base, and wooden outer body and crank knob. After almost 1½ years of use, this grinder still works like new. A few tips: ・Because the mechanism is so effective, grinding will take considerable elbow grease, depending on what coarseness you set. Improve your leverage by holding the grinder body as close to the top as you can without touching the metal crank baseplate. ・The crank baseplate turns directly against the wood body, so don't tighten the top cap, just screw it down until it meets the slightest resistance. This will lower grinding friction and improve longevity. If you find the screw cap loosening over time, simply make a habit of screwing it back down before grinding. ・You probably won't be able to target your ground pepper very accurately. If you need to measure it or dispense it accurately, grind into a cup or saucer and shake/dump from there. ・To prevent steam and moisture from clogging up the grinding mechanism, do not grind directly over hot or cooking food. Grind into a cup or saucer and shake/dump from there. ・The loading opening is not big (maybe a little over 1 inch). To avoid peppercorns skittering across the counter, get (or make) a funnel that's either big enough to sit around the circumference of the entire opening, or small enough to slip between the drive shaft and the grinder body (but still big enough for any peppercorn). Use a finger to gently stir peppercorns in the funnel to keep them moving. Don't try to shake the funnel or the grinder, it won't end well. ・Since the drive shaft is hexagonal, if you desire ridiculous quantities of ground pepper for some reason, it is possible to go mad scientist and replace the crank with a drill (any one with a 3-jaw chuck should work). ... show more

  • Great grinder but I fill it twice a week.
This grinds wonderfully and it's easy to open and fill. Which is a good thing because it's capacity is very small. I have another grinder the same height and it holds 10 times as much. I'd definitely opt for 1 of the taller models if I had a do=over but II like it a lot.
