Description

Size=4" Made from 130, 000 PSI Au tempered Ductile Iron, the Yost Vises ADI-4 is both lightweight and strong. These vises are designed for durability and longevity. The body is 4 times stronger than cast iron vises and 50% stronger than the previous Forged Steel Vise (FSV) Series. This extra strength means more clamping force for demanding projects. The Au tempered Ductile Iron Vise is lightweight without compromising clamping force. As the only manufacturer in the world to build vises out of ADI, Yost Vises is proud to say that this is the toughest vise you will buy. The Vise features a 360-degree Swivel Base with two lock downs.

  • ADI-4 fit & finish and installation
ADI-4 - well packed in a sturdy box; paint not chipped, vise not scuffed or dented. Somehow bigger than I thought it would be. For me, I wouldn't want any bigger. The jaws open more than 5" and align well. The vise doesn't have the best paint job ever, but covered where it should be and not covered where it shouldn't be. I didn't see any mechanical imperfections. I took it apart, wiped it down well, and used the base as a template for drilling the holes in my bench. Rotation locks are M10 x 1.5; I added M10 grade 8.8 washers to these. I checked the mounting tabs with one of the rotation lock bolts and liked that size, so I ended up with M10 x 1.5 x 90mm bolts (which is a 17mm head - awfully close to 11/16") to secure my vise. 80mm would have been better, maybe even 75mm, through my 1.75" bench. I used neoprene washers sandwiched by 2" x 3/8" galvanized washers top and bottom, between vise and bench on top. Added M10 grade 8.8 washers under the mounting bolts and above the nuts on the bottom. I took my time to position and clamp the base before I drilled. Remember, you want your fixed jaw either even with or slightly in front of the front edge of your bench so if you need to clamp something that hangs down, it will clear the edge of your bench. I used one of my bolts hunting through my drill index to find a good fit. With the base securely clamped and a sacrificial wood block clamped underneath to eliminate tear out, I drilled the back hole first and ran a bolt through it, then aligned the two front mounting tabs so a line between them is exactly parallel with the front of the bench, clamped again and drilled both front holes. Remember to put rotation lock plate in the base with the bolts in it; it won't quite fit with the mounting plate mounted (gee, how could he know that? ;) ). I greased the top of the base and its mate on the vise itself, the rails, and the main screw. Then I bolted it together and wiped it down. I got by with a little clamp-on vise that really didn't hold well for years because I didn't want to drill holes in my bench. What's the point of a nifty workbench if it doesn't have a vise on it? Now to put her to use. ... show more

  • Sloppy machining
This would be an excellent vise for the money if the jaws were parallel. In my case, they are not. I have used it quite a bit on rough work where that didn't matter and now it's probably way out of warranty. So I removed the jaw liners and have been filing away at the underlying cast iron. What a pain! It was way out of parallel, not just a little. I've forgotten my original measurement, but it was a fairly thick feeler gauge. I just file on it for a while every time I go out into the shop and it is close to being finished. I probably wouldn't have posted this (having all of my spare time taken up with filing) but I happened to be in a Harbor Freight store the other day and took a look at their vises. All of their jaws closed perfectly parallel. How annoying. And the overall feel of their comparable vises seemed more solid than this one. And the levers that clamp it from rotating seemed better machined. I don't know if their cast iron is as strong as this one, but the overall machining at workmanship were much better at Harbor Freight. Very surprising. ... show more

  • Beautifully manufactured, Intuitive & innovative!!!
I don't always take the time to write reviews but now and again theres a tool or product that makes me feel like I need to give it the due process it deserves. This Vise is certainly one of them (obviously). It arrived within a week of ordering it, got free shipping and the packaging was wonderfully done, double boxed and padded inside, arrived in perfect condition. Beautifully accented and painted a bright crisp red that draws your attention inside of the shop. I love that the attachments are oxidized for longevity, it certainly has done the trick inside of this climate which does get relatively humid now and again. The performance of the unit is nonetheless outstanding than it's appearance and well thought packaging. It has great clamping force, the swivel base has no movement once pinched down with a relatively light touch, really doesn't take much to get it rigid enough for fixed & sturdy workstation. The anvil is well machined and of a nice covenant size for the overall construction of the unit. I applaud the innovation put into the design for adjusting the tolerances of the unit to adapt for normal wear and tear overtime. That's very nice. It's got a full lifetime warranty on the unit and accents. If the jaws mess-up, the drawbar bends, the base breaks loose, they will replace the piece or vise free of charge to the customer. Yost really won me over with this guy. I couldn't be happier with the vise itself, and its overall performance. Plus it's US produced, manufactured, & distributed... (& it shows). Thank you Yost! ... show more

  • Just as good as the old version
I bought this for another bench. It's just as good as the older steel version. These 4" vises are a good size for home workbench use. The jaws extend a little more that normal - you can use them on a 5 inch grip. I have not used a cheater bar, but I have put about a 100 lb push on the end of the handle to do some limited die forming, and the vise does not complain at all. This vise is about the minimum if you want one that will not break or embarrass you - it's neither Harbor Freight or Wilton quality. It does have a gib you can adjust so the jaws will not wobble. it does not have any shaft bearings like a milling vise would have. As to whether the ductile iron is as strong or stronger as the older steel version, I have no interest in testing to failure to find out. They both hold work just fine, and I like the adjustable gib to keep the jaws from wobbling. ... show more
