  • Good for the price
It’s a good compromise for the price but by no means an equal substitution for an equivalent lens by Canon. Pretty good build quality, works fine. No variable zoom so it’s always at 50mm which is fine for a cheaper lens.

  • Low budget, good quality.
I’m surprised of the quality of image of this lens, since day one it gave me memorable pictures and took my photography game to the next level. Bad things about this, for me and maybe because I have a canon 400D ( it all depends on how new is your camera body ) I have slow autofocus and even thought the image quality is pretty good, still not so sharp as the canon 50mm: Conclusion... if you have a low budget and you want to start in this photography world in any way, buy this ASAP, and when you are all pro this will be still a good lens to take pictures. Fully recommended! ... show more

  • 3.5 star lens with a 5 star value
The YN50 1.8 isn't going to turn any heads, but I feel like it is a great lens to have in the lineup if you don't already have a nifty/thrifty fifty in your kit. After 10 years of wear and tear my canon 50mm 1.8 came apart; plastic body + constant twisting = not good. For half the price of the Canon, I saw this and gave it a shot. Images are a little bit softer when wide open at 1.8 than the canon, but everything looks and feels the same. People might even like the softness for video. Overall though it is a lens with a fast aperture, familiar feel, and a great price. Random thing that only a few will be affected by. I moved on to Fujifilm and use a Fringer autofocus adapter for my Canon glass, which most of them work flawlessly. Unfortunately the Yongnuo-Canon glass do not autofocus on the fringer, not knocking any points off, just informing anyone that would be considering the lens to adapt to other systems. ... show more

  • one of those rare super high value per dollar items
I did not get the MK2 version so this is for the currently super low-cost MK1 version. This is one of those rare "super high value per dollar" items. Grab it before all gone if you are looking for your first 50mm f1.8 EF and you are NOT using it for video but only for photography. This is NOT for video (unless you are only using it for b-rolls) because of the noise, not the image quality. The autofocus works fine. I have both the Canon original 50mm f1.8 ef (MK1 with loud motor and focus ring locked in auto mode) and this one, and I see no obvious differences in terms of IMAGE QUALITY. The BUILD quality, even though already pretty good, is still not as good as the Canon original but with 1/3 the price there is no complaint. The Canon original is plastic as well after all. Again, if you are only doing photos, absolutely recommended! If you need to shoot some live video with audio then get the MK2 because the motor is improved and quieter on MK2. ... show more

  • Very good.
It isn't a high-end Nikon Lens, but it is good quality for what it is. Very sharp.

  • Great lens for the price
Insanely good lens for the price. I paired it with a 1100 dollar Sigma 85 the other day to shoot multi-cam interview and you certainly can see a difference, but at 5% the cost, it wasn't that much worse. I sometimes see some slight magenta or green tinting, but it's easily fixed in lightroom. The AF works really well with the dual pixel software on the 90d as well. This should be in every Canon EOS system users bag. After an all purpose zoom, this is the second lens I suggest people to buy. Just as good as the Canon nifty fifty imo ... show more

  • Ok, but nowhere near Canon’s
I should’ve expected less from the price, but you definitely get what you pay for. The build quality isn’t the best, the photos are ok, the manual focus is ok but it doesn’t feel good, and the auto focus is loud and I wouldn’t recommend using that cause it doesn’t work anywhere near similar to Canon’s brand lenses. I was determined to spend as little as possible for a 50mm lens, so I took a chance and bought it. I should’ve listened to other reviews, but I wanted to see for myself. I ended up spending extra to get the Canon brand 50mm lens because it is just THAT much better. If you’re looking to just have a 50mm lens and you don’t want to spend too much, get it; otherwise, I would suggest saving yourself the hassle and going with the Canon brand lens. ... show more
