  • Amazing and worth the $$$
I normally don't buy ham radio equipment from Amazon because I try and support the ham stores so that they don't end up like Radio Shack, but this one was coming from Ham Radio Outlet anyway and it was a good deal. I had been going back and forth between radio options for my Jeep for a few months and had narrowed it down between the FTM-400 and FTM-300. The only thing holding me back from the FTM-300 was the size of the screen, but I decided to go with it anyway and I am glad I did. The screen is so very nice. It has excellent definition and color. It isn't hard to read at all. In fact, I prefer the smaller size in my Jeep because space is limited as it is. Now let's talk about performance. Although this radio (full disclosure: I am a Yaesu fan) is extremely easy to program from the faceplate, I used the RT Systems software to program in all of the repeaters and simplex frequencies and had it running in no time. The scanning is extremely fast even with a lot of channels. Sound quality from the built in speaker was loud, but since I have installed it under the front seat of my Jeep and often have the top and doors off, I added an external speaker (which is optional to have one speaker for both A/B or one speaker for each). The non-touch screen was actually a selling point for me. It works reliably and the menus are easy to navigate quickly. Not having the touchscreen menu items on the screen actually makes the screen size more comparable to the FTM-400 in usable space. It is also easy to use even if you are wearing gloves. I am also not continually cleaning fingerprints off my screen. One of the main reasons that I chose this radio was for the APRS function. APRS sends a signal that allows someone else to see your GPS location on aprs.fi. It also allows you to send messages to other people via ham radio. I live in Utah and a lot of the places I go do not have cell service. I like having lots of options to make sure that me and the kids get home. Ham radio is great for this, but just in case I would like for someone to be able to see where my last APRS beacon was and come looking for me. Yaesu has a separate manual just for the APRS function. It was easy to set up to my preferences even though I have never used APRS before. Also, I love the new microphone. Great build quality, intuitive button placement, programmable buttons and feels good in your hand. Yaesu did a great job with the mic. The body mounting plate is outstanding. Yaesu has gone to a mounting plate that the radio body slides into and locks. I have the plate screwed into the plate, through my carpet and into a board under the carpet of my Jeep. The radio then slides in and locks in place, with a release catch for easy removal. Simple thing, but works great. The faceplate mounting plate is very basic, but will work in most applications. I wanted something that was easily removable because I do not leave the faceplate in the Jeep when the doors/top are off. I also want to keep it out of the sun. Because of this, I purchased a Lido Mounts suction cup mount. It is a standard ball mount design and screws right into the faceplate. I can easily remove the mount from the ball whenever I need to take it out of the Jeep. To be honest, I'm not much of a Wires-X guy because we don't have repeaters near me and I don't run a hotspot, but this radio will handle that. I have had some YSF contacts and the audio was great. In summation, no buyer's remorse here from me. It is an excellent radio and an outstanding addition to my Jeep. Just a great product from Yaesu. *********************************************************************************************************************************************** I rely on reviews when I make purchases so I put a lot of time into reviewing everything I buy on Amazon for personal and my business. • Great Radio!!!
I've been an amateur radio operator for 27 years, hold an extra class license. I have been getting into the digital radios and have several. The FTM-300 is THE BOMB for mobile use! Digital on the A and B bands, large display, large knobs, and THE MIC! The MIC is a HOME RUN with it's shape and the great big MUTE button. Both receivers can be blaring away when the phone rings and with a quick push of the great big mute button, I can answer my call. The menu is intuitive and is similar to the FTM-400 and FT-3D (I have both). If you're considering a C4FM mobile, this is it! While the touch screen on the FTM-400 is nice, even great in the shack, I find it cumbersome in the mobile. The FT-300 is not touch screen, just button (well sized and spaced) and knobs. I really like having the FTM-300 in my work truck. The internal speaker is great, plenty loud! I have no need to add an external speaker(s). I say speakers because Yaesu gives you the option of external speaker jacks for A side and B side, or you can use an external speaker for both bands. But with a factory internal speaker like it has, you probably won't need any. I've had it for a couple days now and the more I play with it, the more I like it. ... show more

  • Excellent radio for mobile use
The detachable head comes with all required mounting hardware, and can be mounted easily in a vehicle due to it's smaller size compared to the 400dr. The screen (which is not a touchscreen) has proven easy to see in various lighting conditions. The APRS functionality is great, with with customized pop-up alerts showing you received beacons, messages, etc. Each band has two dedicated knobs, allowing for easy adjustments of each separately. Programming is quite easy when done from the unit itself, and even easier when done via the SD card. From a usability standpoint, this has been one of my favorite radios, and was a massive step up from the ID-4100 that I had installed previously. The only downside... is upgrading the firmware. I am accustom to finicky firmware upgrades, so I was very careful to follow Yaesu's directions exactly. I made many attempts, tried multiple computers, USB cables, etc. I even had another ham follow all the directions on his own computer, just to make sure that I hadn't made a mistake. It didn't work for him either. Out of stubbornness I just kept trying it... No idea what the issue was, but one time it just suddenly worked. ... show more

  • Simply awesome, worth every penny
I love this radio. Unlike other posts I think the size of the screen is just the right size. The fan doesn't run constantly only when needed. The speaker is clear and loud. This is an awesome radio, period.

  • Fusion True dual-band with cross-band repeater built in.
This is the first Yaesu radio that I found very easy to program and change settings on. Most of the settings are in a human-readable menu that is easy to follow. I set it up as a Simplex Fusion Node for me and other local hams to use. I love being able to either monitor another frequency on the same or different band or use the APRS while talking on the other side. When using it in single band mode, it displays a spectrum across the bottom that shows additional frequencies being used. Fantastic radio and I plan to get another. ... show more

  • Awesome rig!
Awesome radio! Showed up in less than 2 days! Loaded an sd card with 200 frequencies and was ready to go! Great signal quality and having been snagging 80-100 mile simplex contacts in the winterheat contest going on right now. Being able to listen to both vfo's is a big plus to. Will definitely get another! ... show more

  • No Alphanumeric?
At this price this radio should have alphanumeric display. Period. A hundred features I don't need or care about, but no alpha? Makes no sense. I'll just spend $50 more for a FTM-400 and get a touch screen and alphanumerics. I predict an early demise for this product line. Dumb.

  • Worth every penny
Love it! Using it pretty much every day on a 1/4 verticle 2m dipole. Get reception on all bands and have zero complaints. Goes great with my ft 70d and my ft 891!
