With so many OBD-II scanners on the market, it can be a daunting task to select the right tool. My approach was to consider a few factors, all of which culminated in my decision to go with the XTOOL D7S. -Factor 1 (Support): Not all scanners can perform every diagnostic function for all vehicles. Thus it’s important to verify your specific vehicle(s) with customer service as the first step in order to determine whether or not the tool can do what you want it to. -XTOOL excelled in this area of support, they were the only scanner company out of 8 that replied to my email inquiry within 12 hours. After establishing contact with XTOOL, my follow-on inquiries were answered by “Jenny” in just a matter of hours, even on the weekend. They were honest and informative. -Factor 2 (Diagnostic Capabilities): I was experiencing intermittent drivability issues on my 5.7 Jeep. Loud clunking sounds at low speed, loss of forward momentum (felt like the driveshaft was disconnected), dash lit up with traction control and ABS lights and a warning to service the ABS and 4x4 systems. -The D7S proved its weight in gold as it positively identified a faulty left/rear wheel speed sensor. Live-Data showed 3 wheels at 25 mph and the left/rear wheel at 0 mph, while in Park, the 3 good sensors reflected 0 mph and the faulty sensor reflected 8,191 rpm. The D7S displayed 4 related DTC’s, all of which resulted from the faulty wheel speed sensor. -Ordered an OEM wheels speed sensor, installed it and an hour and $48 later, my Jeep was driving like new. -Factor 3 (Cost): The D7S is pricy compared to allot of inexpensive scanners, but the D7S is not an inexpensive scanner. It’s a quality tool. It’s fast, easy to use and has the potential to pay for itself after just one use. Plus, it’s well supported. -I’m impressed with XTOOL, both their products and support. Unlike some other companies that only provide annual scanner updates, XTOOL has their head in the game and provides monthly updates with just the push of a button. I purchased the Xtool D7S to work with several of my vehicles (1) Toyota, (2) Hondas and wanted a one-stop device with bidirectional capabilities to compliment a very basic ScanGauge 2 that I've been using for years. Full disclosure, the D7S is the first advanced diagnostic tool I’ve tried and is way over the top for most of what I do as I will mostly use it to read codes since one of the Hondas and the Toyota are from the early 00's. These vehicles simply do not have all the software that a newer one would have. The D7S does have some great functionality with my newer Honda Civic Hybrid. I can confirm that the manual bidirectional testing functions (activating the cooling fans, door locks, and ABS actuator) worked on the Civic. The DTC diagnosis feature is very comprehensive and provides online links taking you to DTC explanations so you are not having to look these up on a separate device. I have not tried using any of the live data to diagnose harder to find issues, so I can’t speak to its functionality for some of the more advanced features. Navigating the tool can be a bit tricky. For example, the D7S can perform a crankshaft sensor re-learn procedure on the Honda Civic but finding it was not initially straightforward. The Special Function button on the main screen only takes you to a handful of manufacturers and Honda was not on the list. Turns out it was further down in the "Diagnosis" menu where you need to jump through a few more options until you get to "Diagnostic Package". There you will find bidirectional features including the crank sensor relearn. This initially confused me, so I reached out to Xtool tech support and they were very responsive and were able to help me find that function. Perhaps Xtool will address this in a future update. There is a lot I still have not done with the D7S. Ideally, I'd give it a 4.5 star review because I just have not had a chance to use it comprehensively and it is too early to speak for its longevity. Looking forward to using it on my own vehicles and trying it on a few others in the future. So far it seems to work well and time will be the ultimate test. I do give five stars for their customer service! Xtool is very responsive when you send them questions via email, and were able to quickly address several of my inquiries which was greatly appreciated. ... show more
