  • Nice sturdy tool for drawing circles
Style: Pocket Compass XL - 1" – 21" Range
I used this to trace some circles on the backside of a velcro sheet that I needed to cut. This is quite a fair bit sturdier than regular compass, and has a nice locking mechanism which ensures you don't accidentally lose the radius that you were tracing at. Quality is quite nice, and I like that it includes a build-in holder for the pivot needle. ... show more

  • Works well and is accurate
Style: Pocket Compass XL - 1" – 21" Range
I just tested my new arc/circle drawing tool and it works well. For storage the pin screws into one end and for swinging an arc the pin just drops into the hole near the opposite end. Light, downward pressure on the pin allows you to anchor the end and swing an arc without denting your wood. When making a small arc you will probably need to push the tool with your fingers, several inches farther out from the pencil, so that you don't break the pencil lead. I checked the imperial and metric scales against other accurate rulers and they matched. Be aware that the holes for marking are countersunk large enough for a regular pencil but the through-hole for the lead is small so a mechanical pencil is needed. A minor issue is I think the slide locking mechanism could be better. When tightening the thumb screw it was natural for me to gently squeeze the outer forks together but this caused it to break loose easily or not even lock. I tried without squeezing the forks together and it locked much better. ... show more

  • Does the job, but is awkward
Style: Pocket Compass XL - 1" – 21" Range
The tool is made well, but honestly a bit heavy & bulky making it difficult to use in most applications. I had to modify my holes (drilled them larger) to accommodate a standard pencil, you'd have little problem with a mechanical pencil, but then the weight needed to push will probably bend or break a standard mech pencil. Also the weight needed to move such a heavy object makes this prone to slipping unless your are exerting a lot of effort on the center pin. This almost always results in a large hole in softer materials. Materials like metal, this thing is going to slide all over the place. Its a good concept, but needs to be made of MUCH lighter materials (and it is aluminum) to be of any use for most jobs. This is great for very specific projects, but wont be of much use most of the time. ... show more

  • Great tool but a little confusing at first
Style: Pocket Compass XL - 1" – 21" Range
Very nice tool...works great and is very precise. It is a bit confusing till you figure out to add an inch from the pivot point to set the correct distance desired. Works great!

  • So MUCH Better!
Style: Pocket Compass XL - 1" – 21" Range
I had been looking for something to help me with making better rings for my pyrography projects than the 'ole string and pencil method. Others, though they will give you that circle you're looking for, you size is VERY limited. This one give me the ability to make BIGGER rings! WHEW!!

  • Good at making large circles.
Style: Pocket Compass XL - 1" – 21" Range
I bought this compass to make larger circles for my woodworking projects. I've only used it once, but it worked. It took a couple of tries to figure out how to hold the pencil (I used a mechanical pencil) when drawing the circle, but it turned out well. It would be nice if the hole where the pencil goes was smaller because you have to hold it in place when making the circle. ... show more

  • A Pen or Pencil Must Fit the Swinging Arm Tightly
Style: Pocket Compass XL - 1" – 21" Range
I purchased this swing-arm compass to make full-scale drawings of a 22 inch diameter composite flywheel, with numerous concentric circles to illustrate the fiber reinforcement architecture for the build technicians. The compass is very well made and the measurement adjustments are easy to make. My difficulty was that I was trying to use a drawing pen to draw the large circles on vellum or bond paper. The drawing pens I had did not fit the swing arm very well and would constantly skip. A pencil worked better, but required two-handed coordination to draw an accurate circle. I expect that the swing arm would work better with a scribe, or perhaps a pencil or pen that fit very tightly into the swing arm receptacles. So I think this swing arm compass may be excellent for some applications, but was not ideal for me. ... show more
