The base is much heavier than expected, which means the holder will not tip over accidentally. The wood is smooth and very pretty, great grain and color. I thought this was the classiest ring holder I saw. I was not disapointed it is nice and sturdy. I gave it 4 stars because it is a little sharp on the edge of the metal in one spot. We are going to try to file it down. I would buy it again. But was a little pricey
