Description

The Wolo 846 has been designed to produce the powerful “Sputtering Sound” that is used by fire trucks and emergency vehicles. All metal construction, chrome plated throughout so to withstand the extremes in all weather conditions and to provide years of dependable service. The Chief will look great on any emergency vehicle. Provided with the horn is a metal front pedestal support that is chrome plated. The support will help to eliminate trumpet vibration at high speeds and on the roughest roads. The Chief was designed with two air inlets, either from the horn's base for roof mounting or front of the base for behind the bumper mounting. Installation is made easy with Wolo’s flexible inlet hose with brass fittings. The kit includes; flexible inlet hose, stainless steel mounting hardware and rubber gaskets for a watertight installation. Instructions in English / Spanish. The Chief requires an on- board air system (recommended Wolo on-board air system is Model 840).

  • Great horn
I’ve had this horn for 2 years now. It is still going strong. I have a few words of wisdom for the new setups. I fought air leaks. I hate air leaks. I used 1/4 ID line. It was a constant fight using hose barb/clamps. My suggestion is to either use OD DOT tubing or if you want more flow use Parker Push Lok fittings and hose combo. The Parker fittings never leak, and don’t require a clamp plus are rated for 300 degrees. Also buy a high quality industrial 1/4 or 1/8 solenoid. Buy a filter/separator/regulator. I am planning on doing Db testing at different pressures. Buy a Viair compressor. Mine is going on 6 years old and I bought it used. It is hooked to a 30 gal tank. I never had any problems with this setup. Hook the compressor up with the thickest wire you can. ... show more

The horn itself is great. I did a dual set with a Viair compressor that I've had a few years now. The small hoses that Wolo provides with these are junk. I'm not even running these at max PSI and one of the provided hoses blew. My suggestion, 30 amp relay on the compressor, a regular air hose like the ones you use for air tools from the compressor to your air tank. (I used a 10 gallon tank from Harbor Freight and did a multi port junction.) I wired mine so the relay was switch inside so the compressor could be turned on and off when the truck is parked. The air solenoid is powered full time so the horns will work even with the ignition off. As far as the air supply for the horns from the tank and the air valve solenoid, use the black air tubing with the compression fittings. So far the tubing and fittings are holding 115 PSI with no problem. I also did a 115/85 PSI pressure switch. ... show more

  • This horn is no joke the sound literally pierces your soul
For the price I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it is, after unpacking I charged up my garage air tank up to 165 PSI and hooked up an air nozzle to the port on the horn to test it out and let me just say make sure you're wearing ear protection because it literally rattles your brain and blurs your vision. To the point I actually have to be careful of when I actually use this on the road as it could possibly cause an accident with how loud it is that it would scare the hell out of somebody. It says it's rated for 125 decibels I have no way to test it but it feels like it's so much more than that just make sure if you go to try it out make sure you're nowhere near the business end of this thing especially without your protection or you will mess yourself up and yes it does sound exactly like it actual fire truck horn ... show more

  • Sounds great on CO2
Update 04/14/20: It's been cranked up to 350psi (highest my CO2 regulator goes) for 3+ years now. I'd say average use has been about 3 seconds a week in traffic, and a 5-10 second showoff blast once a month. Still going strong. At 350psi, it's much louder than a train. I compared it at a railroad crossing once, and it echoed about 3x longer than the train's horn did. I've got my horn running off my CO2 setup, regulated at 150psi, and it sounds fantastic. Doesn't sound exactly like our horns at the FD, but that's from using CO2 instead of normal air, the higher pressure, and it being a different brand (we use Whelen). It's still obviously recognizable as an emergency-type horn, and still just as loud, probably louder, actually. People definitely notice it. Installation was ridiculously easy, mounted it under the front bumper of my Jeep XJ. I used a Kleinn 307 solenoid, perfectly matches the chrome of the horn, and it screwed straight into the front inlet of the horn for a seamless look and instant activation. Only issue I had was with the 6 inch jumper hose that came with the horn. The fittings blew while I was checking for leaks, and I only had it at 60psi. Should have had clamps on it, I don't know why it didn't. That's why I only gave it 4 stars. Luckily I had a couple clamps in my air hose repair box, and after that I had no issues. Honestly, the hardest part of the install was running 1/4" air brake line from the horn on the bumper, through the firewall, and then along the cab into the trunk, while keeping it hidden for a nice look. I ended up running it under the trim above the doors. After that, I just put a quick connect on it in the trunk so I can easily take it off my CO2 tank for air tools and refills.   • LOUD great sound! But included hardware sucks
The horn works great, but the mounting hardware and host connectors are lacking. I ended up mounting the horn and the solenoid for it (Wolo brand one, not included with the horn), to a 2' long 2x6 with some structural screws. This let me attach the solenoid to the horn with a small bit of 1/8" copper pipe using the included compression fittings. The included hose was too short and the wrong connectors to be useful, and the included plug for the 1/8" port was threaded wrong and thus doesn't fit. I mounted the board to a frame rail with several 1/4-20 bolts and ran a 1/4 NPT hose from the solenoid back to the air tank (2Gal/150PSI Viair kit) w/regulator set to ~80. Works great, and running at the lower pressure and 2gal tank, we can lay on the horn for a long time without running out of air. ... show more

  • Let me say that these are good quality for the price
I have installed a lot of horns on different trucks. Let me say that these are good quality for the price. I have never used a 12v compressor so i cannot say for sure how well that would work. All my trucks are air brake with in board air. At 120lbs these horns are loud and authentic. You will not be dissapointed if you use proper air pressure. The cons. The supplied bolts for mounting are good enough. I did have to add some sealants because the rubber gasket mushed into the base a bit. I was afraid it might leak. But for the price no big deal. The supplied air fittings are not really what you need. It may work for some but i had to buy my own. The thread size for the horn base wasnt exactly right. Brass fittings get real tight real fast. I reccomend no more than 3 turns after snug. But they do seal and hold. These are a lower price alternative that with a few cheap parts and tubing will deliver a nice epic fire truck sound. I would reccomend to the mechanicly inclined. ... show more
