Top Amazon Reviews

  • Huge budget winner
Color: Black Coral Sea
I have reviewed about a half-dozen mechanical keyboards and used another half-dozen more before those. I'm familiar with keyboards from major brands and unknown brands, from $20 to $200+. Right now, I would say the ~$80 price category is where most people should be looking for a mechanical keyboard. If you want something versatile, well-built and feature-rich, you save yourself a lot of headache avoiding the common 'gaming' keyboard brands and seeking out niche 'enthusiast' brands in this price range. There's a lot of competition, but you can usually get something that's the best of most worlds with few compromises at that price point. So this keyboard currently comes in just over $60, and it's quickly jumped to the top of the pack for me against $80-120 boards I've used before it. I expected for the price there would be more to complain about, but this is a pretty balanced option for the price! The software is good - this is where a lot of boards fall flat, but I was really happy to see this keyboard allows you to use the software to change the key functions and dial in the colors you want and save it to the hardware, so you don't need it running all the time. You can do more with the software active, which is fairly normal if you're used to gaming keyboard brands and their software, but it's not often I see the variety of settings and options you get here under enthusiast or unknown brands. I find the screen surprisingly nice-looking - it pops in place with a special 8-pin connection that goes around a blank slot where you can alternatively set down a key switch instead. The screen appears to be IPS, rather than TN or VA, as there is no noticeable ghosting between frames on animations, and the colors don't change when viewed off-axis or at different angles. You really have to get close to it before you start to see the pixels, so it's quite high resolution for its size. Personally, I just use it as a form of customization and keep a gif looping on it, but it's super nice for navigating the built-in keyboard features that you'd normally have to remember FN+key combos for. The screen only uses FN + right and left arrow, and FN + enter. (it isn't actually a button, itself) Kind of a bummer it's covering what would be the Delete key, but you can easily just switch anything else to the Delete function and put that key in its place. This is what mechanical keyboards are all about! Hotswappable switches, customization, dialing in that perfect typing feeling and ideal look! So then, how is the typing on this board? It's on the better side of "good". Out of the box, I'm not a big fan of the keys, and I think the switches are somewhat on the cheaper side. They have a nice, smooth action to them, but the stems don't have the 'circle' around the 'cross' and the plastic of the switches isn't transparent or translucent, so the light passes through a hole. It would have been nice to have a transparent light spreader so the RGB comes out more even. A lot of enthusiasts will appreciate the south-facing LEDs, but I don't love the awkward 'window' that light is forced to come out through. It doesn't shine through as brightly as it should. The keycaps appear to be OEM profile, although it's not stated anywhere specifically. I love XVX profile but that appears to just be the brand of the board, not the shape of the keys. Bummer. The typing feel is nice and soft, the stabilizers and switches are pre-lubed and it successfully prevents any gritty feeling to the motion. The sound is quiet for a mechanical board, but it's also fairly clacky for all the supposed damping in place. The keycaps may be the culprit, in particularly some in the top row have a tendency to bottom out with a strong high-pitched clicky noise. While it comes with the feel of a nice, "thocky" board (the ideal most mechanical keyboard enthusiasts seek out) it doesn't have that sound. I'm not a fan of the ocean wave visual, so I tried swapping out some of the keycaps with other sets to see if I got a more thocky result. Although I have a set that worked to help the sound of a higher-end board of mine, the leftover keys from that didn't seem to benefit this one noticeably. It's like going from clicky to clacky - maybe a bit lower-pitched than before, but far from the thocky depth I'm looking for. I could see more modding, such as putting some padding under the keyswitches (and maybe trading out the switches for another set) being a benefit here, but more testing will be needed there. As for the bigger picture, the case appears to be plastic all around, but it's a surprisingly heavy board. This may be one of the heaviest I own, if only by a little. It's not enough to be a problem, but if you meant to rely on the wireless to use this as a living room keyboard I would probably look elsewhere, as it's already less than ideal using larger than a 75% keyboard in that kind of setting. But on the plus side, there's very little deck flex to speak of with this board. I particularly appreciate the cable routing channel on the back, as it allows the USB-C port to be seated a couple inches in, effectively preventing damage to the port from accidental bumps. While the overall build here doesn't scream high-quality, I don't find anything to be worth worrying about. Whatever the case, I come back to the value proposition. While some aspects of this keyboard don't impress, what does is the fact that it comes in at half the price of my daily driver, and sacrifices shockingly little in comparison. I do wish I had a volume knob here, and of course if I was even thinking of using this at my desk it would need a wrist rest for ergonomics, but for all its features and its build quality, this is genuinely quite an impressive keyboard for the price. I easily recommend this board to anyone who might be interested, whether you don't much care about the particular sound and feel of your keyboard and just want something affordable and good, or you're a tinkerer looking for a project. With the current 20% discount off its usual $80 price, I think this is the best keyboard I've personally gotten my hands on in its price range, while undercutting the competition at the same time. ... show more

  • Awesome Keyboard - Bad software
Color: Black Coral Sea
I'm currently typing this review using this keyboard. This is probably the nicest keyboard I have ever used. The keys feel super smooth and have a good mechanical keyboard feel without being insanely loud like some other mechanical keyboards I have tried. The mini screen is an awesome feature but honestly could've been executed better since the software is lacking. I'll speak more on that in a minute. But the keyboard itself is amazing. The key caps have a very nice design and the RGB lighting looks great and has lots of different patterns. This keyboard comes with a built in battery which is really nice if you prefer a wireless keyboard. The battery lasts a super long time too. I haven't had to charge it yet. This keyboard comes with tons of options for connecting it to the computer. You can use the included USB cable, USB dongle, or direct bluetooth connection. I prefer either using the cable or dongle but the directions for direct bluetooth connection are pretty simple. So far I have had no connectivity issues. The only reason why I give this keyboard 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the software used for programming it and changing the little accessory screen. The screen is supposed to be able to show GIFs but the software makes it basically impossible to upload them. As with many cheaper amazon keyboards, the software is not made well and has stability issues. When trying to upload a GIF to the integrated screen, you have to split the GIF into multiple PNG images. But even when I do that, it will not let me upload more than 1 PNG. So basically you can only upload images and not GIFs to the mini screen. There is also some other broken functionality in the software. Its just a really clunky application that barely works. I'm going to have to find some third party software so I can properly upload a GIF to the screen. I've seen this too many times where a company making an otherwise great physical product cuts corners on the software and effectively ruins a great product with bad software. This keyboard is no exception. I am only deducting one star for this slight since the RGB color change portion of the software works well and the GIF upload isn't 100% essential to operation but its a really annoying quirk. If you order this keyboard, I would suggest looking for some third party software to change the image on the integrated screen. Overall, this is a great keyboard. It feels super nice to use and isn't too loud. The keyboard is well made and has pretty much all of the features you could want. The integrated mini screen is a nice touch but the software that goes along with this keyboard is so bad that its impossible to upload a GIF, only a static PNG. I would award 5 stars but the software has broken functionality. If you order this, you will probably be very happy with the keyboard but you may need to come up with a workaround if you want to upload custom GIFs to the screen. ... show more
