Description

Winsor & Newton Artists' Picture Cleaner is a natural resin/oil emulsion containing ammonia designed for cleaning varnished paintings. It works by dissolving linseed oil oxidation and will remove surface dirt and the products of oxidation in the old varnish. Note that a picture that needs to have old varnish removed should be entrusted to a competent picture restorer. Unvarnished paintings may also be treated with Artists' Picture Cleaner but great care is necessary and the process should be stopped immediately if any color appears to be coming off the painting. Shake before and during use. Clean small areas with cotton wool pads. When cleaning is complete remove any remaining cleaner with distilled turpentine. Batch colour and settlement may vary.

I bought this painting from 1936 (a copy painted of the original painting titled "Alone and Forsaken") in a little antique shop while on vacation. Decided I'd like to try and clean it, and found this stuff. Followed the directions using cotton wool pads (and wiped at the end with their distilled turpentine - so make sure you get that, too!) and was shocked to see the whole mood and color of the painting change and brighten. It's glorious. Friend asked me "How did you learn to restore paintings?!", since she thought I had gone through a painstaking process of professional restoration. Ha! There are still bits of yellow stained in (when you're staring closely at a painting for that long, you see every speck), and I am not sure if it is old varnish or nicotine staining.. I bought an oil painting at a garage sale, and while I'm sure it's not worth much, I like it enough to want to clean it without damage. This product was cheap enough to want to try. It was a successful cleaning.

I bought a grubby 1930s oil painting at an auction and bought this to see if I could remove the years of dirt. While the cleaner did lift some surface grime, I'd say the results are very modest. The colors are a little more vibrant, but the murk remains.

I was nervous about using anything on my old dusty oil painting. It worked fine enough. Clean grim off well. I used and old tshirt then cotton balls. I highly recommend using in a well ventilated area. I may go over it one more time but will have to purchase another bottle.

Did this turn my 100-year-old “oil painting done by a talented family member but no DaVinci” painting into a brilliant, like new painting that would match a professional restorer’s work? No. But, did it easily and safely clean off all those decades of soot and grime and make the painting look a WHOLE lot better than it did? YES. I chuckled at some of the results - our painting (which I have looked at now for almost 70 years) has a river running through the middle of it. But, who knew there was a little “waterfall” area in the river before we cleaned it??? So, if you’re expecting your oil painting to look like it was professionally cleaned as it might if you spent big bucks to get it done, you will be disappointed.
