  • Got a lemon, but it was replaced within a day. Can't complain now.
Capacity: 8TB Style: Previous Generation
I ordered this a few days back and it came yesterday. I installed it as soon as I got home from work, created a partition in the same way I've done a million times before, but something either went wrong there, which I don't think happened. I've been installing and partitioning drives since I was like 10. I'm not saying it's impossible I screwed up, I'm saying it's very unlikely. The computer I installed it in also booted slow which it shouldn't because it's a brand new, high end workstation PC booting from an M.2 that I built myself to perform very specific tasks. It normally takes 5-20 seconds to boot from dead cold. With that drive installed it took about a minute, which your average PC user probably wouldn't even notice. But I'm not an average user, and I certainly did. It also gave me issues when trying to render with Blender or open CC4, Substance Painter, or any GPU intensive program. Even Halo CE was laggy and that's hardly a dent on my GPUs at max settings. I can play Halo and Render animations at the same time most nights. I'm not sure what that was about, some sort of bottleneck in my machine somwhere, because when I removed the drive and wiped the partition, everything worked fine again. I'm fairly sure there was a fault with the drive itself. I first noticed when it only showed 8gbs of capacity. I've seen USB sticks do this, but it's almost universally because that portion of the memory is unallocated. This was not unallocated, it was simply not present. I tried every formatting and recovery trick I know to no avail. Even tried a few paid recovery programs with no luck. At first I thought I just screwed up, but with each recovery and formatting methods I tried that failed, the more I was convinced I didn't screw up. Finally around 11 or so at night, after hours of trying I gave up and submitted a request for a replacement which came already today. I just installed said replacement moments ago. No issues what-so-ever. Installed fine and reads exactly as it should. So, yeah. I did apparently receive a dud on the first go, but Amazon was quick to replace it and the new one has no issues thus far. WD has always made good equipment and I stand by their HDDs even still. This was the first problem I've had with WD drives in many years, over a decade. I've had VERY old ones become corrupted, but never had one not work right out of the box. Again, I want to stress that this was last night it all happened. Amazon got a replacement to me in less than 24 hours, so yeah. No complaints from me. Everything is working and I'm happy. Would buy again. ... show more

  • Digital Computer Storage You Need
Capacity: 8TB Style: Previous Generation
Digital Computer Storage You Need for today's large program files and data. I have been in computing for well over 50-years and I remember the first Personal Computer HDD, that cost more than this one and were only 5-MB in size! This drive is faster access and very quiet and will have all the storage that I will need for my computer and the second one I bought will work great for my Digital Movie Storage System on my Home Theatre System. Have had this for several months now and have had NO ISSUES with them. I highly recommend them for a Computer Storage Device, Home Network Attached Storage Device or Home Theatre Movie Storage Device. Great Mechanical Hard Disk drive from a trusted manufacturer! ... show more

  • Godd storage device, bad productive workload device
Capacity: 8TB Style: Previous Generation
Before bying this device you must aknowledge that this is a rather slow high capacity storage device. It is not meant for gaming or any productive workloads. It works perfect in the usecase it was built for - storing big volumes or large data sets/ collections. If read\write speed isn't important to you (like a home media server) - it will work fine ... show more

  • Another great product from western digital.
Capacity: 8TB Style: Previous Generation
I have been building computers since them came out and I only use WD hard drives. they are reliable, cost effective and they last. This drive is no exception. I use it for my plex server so it gets a ton of use and like the 6TB Blue already installed has work flawlessly. Also of note is that me personally have never had a WD drive fail. For media use or data storage this drive is a great choice but I would not recommend for gaming as it is a platter drive with a speed of only 5640Mb/sec data transfer rate. It would just make load times very slow, and quite frankly the WD black line of drives are a better chose for gaming as they are made for it. Great product. ... show more

Capacity: 8TB Style: Previous Generation
timeline: Ordered May 7 Arrived May 9 Installed May 10 (we don't get packages until fairly late in the day) June 19 decide to Install BG3 onto the drive to play with a friend. Steam locks up completely, computer freezes up (windows 11) Restart PC, Steam and all of this drive are nowhere to be found. attempt to find it, not my first or last Windows Weirdness adventure. Do steps by Freebooter and some other things. No luck at all. Now i'm just upset to be just outside the window for anything to be done about it. all because I wanted to play a game -.- hopefully I can extract my pictures and such off it. have tried using an external HD plug for it, it will not initialize at all, just the quiet death beeps. ... show more

  • Pretty much the perfect storage drive...
Capacity: 8TB Style: Previous Generation
It may not be a super-fast SSD, but it's 8TB, so it isn't exactly designed to be your main drive, anyway. As a storage drive, this drive has served me fantastically. I do A LOT of photo, image, audio, and video editing, and have more directories on my working storage drives than you can imagine. This drive sneers at my projects and keeps right on plugging away. Will buy again...For sure. ... show more
