  • G30 not recommended for Nvidia Shield TV (EDIT: Completely changed opinion. See below.)
EDIT: Completely reversed opinion. G30 remote is recommended to Shield owners wanting a replacement remote with voice, almost complete IR programmability, and lots more buttons than the stock remote. See revised conclusion. I wanted an inexpensive remote with * microphone * at least number keys * IR learning, so I don't have to use the TV remote I purchased the WeChip G30 from Amazon after reading a positive comment in Reddit. My experience: * The Engrish of the manual isn't completely unintelligible (although in the usual incredibly small print for el cheapo Chinese products), but confusing. I thought at first that IR learning didn't work, because the manual, as brief as it is, first discusses a version of the remote that only can learn the TV and Power buttons. Start at "5. This product has Another version ...". * Out of the box in non-TV mode, the following buttons work: * OK (recognized as DPAD_CENTER) and directional pad * Volume and Mute * Back (counterclockwise arrow), Home, Menu * Play/Pause * Enter (also recognized as DPAD_CENTER, and not ENTER) * Delete (recognized as APP_SWITCH; equivalent to double-clicking Home) * I thought the G30's microphone didn't work at first. Part of wanting to buy a remote is that my Shield remote's microphone doesn't work. When the Shield remote is awake, pushing the G30's mic button causes the G30's green light blinks once) and the Shield remote's microphone to activate (the Shield remote's mic button lights up), and since it doesn't work, nothing happened when I spoke. I had to wait until the Shield remote slept for the G30 microphone to respond (G30's green light starts flashing). * I don't think there is a way to have some of the buttons in non-TV mode act as TV buttons Pros: * Being able to program almost every button in IR mode is great. I was able to duplicate my Roku TV's remote. * The buttons have a nice clicky feel. * The G30 microphone seems to work well. There is no need to hold down the button, or wait after pushing the button; the mic is immediately active. * I don't use the air mouse function often, but it is sometimes useful. Cons: * The most serious issue is that most of the buttons don't work in non-TV mode: Number buttons, Stop, Rewind, Fast Forward, Page Up/Page Down. It's one thing for Shield to not recognize them out of the box, but I can't use Button Mapper to assign them to do anything. When I push the buttons in the "Press button to add" dialog box the dialog box closes, so Shield is receiving *something*, but as it stands 75% of the buttons are useless. "Alternate button handling" and "Alternate input method" made no change that I saw. * There is no separate Back button. My Roku TV remote has both Back (arrow points left, button to the left of Home) and the counterclockwise arrow; G30 has only the latter. Most applications in Roku interpret both buttons as Back, but some (such as Prime Video) properly interprets the counterclockwise arrow as a way to quickly replay the previous ten seconds; the TV system menu only understands Back. I taught the G30's Stop button as Back, and the counterclockwise circle as the same as on the Roku remote. * There is no way for some buttons in TV mode to use its non-TV functionality, or vice versa. The volume buttons are the main issue here. I control TV audio with CEC from Shield so this doesn't affect me, but someone who can't do this would need to always switch to TV mode to change or mute volume, then switch back to non-TV mode. * The IR transmitter isn't as strong as the TV remote's. Conclusion: 75% of the buttons not working severely limits the G30 remote's usefulness. That not even the Stop, Rewind, and Fast Forward buttons work is flabbergasting. Unless there is a way for Shield/Android to get the buttons to respond, I think I am going to return the remote. EDIT: After seeing a Reddit comment reporting complete functionality, I am pleased to report after requesting and installing Nvidia's software hotfix, Button Mapper now sees all G30 buttons! Even Delete appears properly as BACKSPACE, and not APP_SWITCH. I still deduct a star because of a) the lack of a separate Back button and b) both OK and Enter sending DPAD_CENTER so not distinguishable, but other than that the G30 has suddenly become all that it was supposed to be. EDIT 2: The 8.0.2 software update also supports the remote. No more need to request the hotfix. ... show more

  • Easy, if not seamless, setup
Color: Black
Product works well against NVIDIA Shield streaming box, though the volume control isn't working properly (or at all). This functionality will likely need to be "taught" to the device, using the learning steps. Keyboard on reverse is a great size for two-handed use and quite useful, too.

  • Very good conventional remote with keyboard. Air pointer needs work
Color: Black
I very much like the traditional remote controls on this device. The addition of the keyboard on the flip side makes it great for occasional input on a PC. I'm still trying to get the air pointer to be consistent as it seems to "wander" one direction or another with movement. It should return to the same place when the remote is positioned at the same place (without running into the screen edges, of course). So, good for a remote, but I wanted to use it for screen control of my CNC router and I may have to give up on it. ... show more

  • Excellent remote for Nvidia Shield
Color: Black
I got one of these to use with my Nvidia Shield TV box as my original remote had died. I absolutely love it. Not only can you use a motion activated mouse pointer, but it also works the same with the directional pad. The kicker of course is the built-in keyboard which works really well. So far, I am very happy with it. ... show more

  • Excellent as PC Remote 1 missing function
Color: Black
Have this connected to a PC I have connected to my TV, as a media PC, and it functions excellently as that, recalibrating orientation is easy and it's VERY intuitive. There is 1 missing function you think would be included, it does not have a functioning right click button. I'll have to see if I can reprogram something for it. It has a "menu" button but that's not good enough. Wherever the cursor is I should be able to right click and this remote just does not have that button. I can probably set up a 3rd party app on my PC for that but I shouldn't have to. ... show more

  • Perfect for LibreElec/Kodi
Color: Black
This is exactly what I was looking for. This remote is perfect for LibreElec. All buttons work as expected, the keyboard is great. I’ve been looking for this exact thing for a while now. My LibreElec host has no trouble, Kodi recognizes all inputs.

  • Mouse Function Not Great
Color: Black
I tried this because of all the five star ratings. Needed a remote for lap top when in a room displaying on big screen tv. No issues with set up or general remote operation. However mouse tracking, response, point and click is like drawing with a brick. It will do but not even close to an actual mouse so takes a bit more time to point and click. ... show more
