  • its huge
It came in handy for a school event recently. it is very big, kinda heavy with tiny words...but it served its purpose.

  • Awesome reference.
This baby sits right next to my computer for when i'm not sure what some word means in an assignment (it hasn't failed me yet). My favorite part about this book is the etymology. It's super fun looking up words, and finding out what language they came from, and what they meant in that language. My cousin did a thesis paper on interlinear glossed text, and i didnt know what "glossed text" was, so i looked it up. Turns out there's two ENTIRELY different entries for gloss, which are spelled the same, and came from different languages (yes, they are pronounced the same too). I wonder how i got by without one of these handy before... Also, searching for stuff on the internet is not as good. Not even close. Where a dictionary on the web might have two or three entries, this bad boy will have like 7! Archaic, and obsolete versions of a word, as well as examples of how to use them. Also, no advertising banners to go through. If i have to look up a word, and go on a little journey (as sometimes the definitions have interesting words in them) I find it's much faster to use paper than the internet. ... show more

  • Great Christmas Gift for someone who wanted it!
This was bought as a gift - it is exactly what my husband wanted. He could not be happier with it. If he is looking for a word - it's got it.

  • solid dictionary; limited ancillary info for so big a volume.
Nice, Big dictionary with decent etymology. Not for people who like alternative spellings.

  • I "RUSH"-ed to buy this, once I realized that the "gilded-cage" of language is very complex even to native "English" speakers.
I have never been much of a diction and grammar, enthusiast! However, it "dawned" on me to look some things up after seeing them in a different "Hue!" with ultra luminescence. I now know why new arrivals to US have such a hard time with English grammar! So many words have different variations, as come from various older languages or "Roots!" Take for instance "Special," also part of "Species"- designed for a dedicated purpose! Then the various different meanings of simple things like the ROYGBIV - spectrum of colors! Even the names of trees have "off-shoots" such as the "Linden Tree," which lines the Unter Den Linden in Berlin, Germany- and itself has numerous variants such as "Box-wood!" The 17th "Strasse" or word simple word "Street" has various different meanings in and of itself, as well as our basic mathematical numbers, etc.... from antiquity to the current era/ "digital" age.... I would also recommend this to folks in the US Armed Services, and US State Department or others "serving" abroad as might add "clarity" to a whole "host" of issues..... Bottom-line: It is easy to see the "Bigger Picture" and why so many folks in fact have a very hard time with language and the "Signals" and meanings it can convey, in numerous forms/fashion , from exceedingly "Simple" to highly "C3omplex!" I "RUSH"-ed to buy this, once I realized that the "gilded-cage" of language is very complex even to native "English" speakers..... But it is also easy to be, as in the case of "Chromium" over- "Saturated!" ... show more

  • Love this dictionary
I loved this dictionary. Over the years, I have collected quite a lot of Merriam Webster Dictionaries: Collegiate, Learners’, Desk, Legal, Grammar etc. This is the magnificent one of all! I finally got it when Amazon had 3 for the price of two along with two books I bought. There are many illustrations in this dictionary as it’s usual the case with any M-W ones. There is one year’s coupon to subscribe to Merriam Webster online. There is also a short biography of Noah Webster, who started the dictionary. The rest is of course history… If anything, maybe it should have more usage examples…That’s one of the reasons I also like Oxford Dictionary series as they always have lots of examples though not necessarily enough illustrations. Merriam Webster ones seem to have more ‘American’ words, though. It comes with a thin cardboard box which I think maybe needs to be replaced by a slipcase so it could be taken out easily frequently. But well…you can always throw it away or flatten it to keep. Just some nitpicking… ... show more
