  • All the basics are there!
My aunt teaches ASL and suggested something along the lines of a more "dictionary" type book when I mentioned wanting to teach my son some signs to communicate before he can speak. While this book is not alphabetized like a dictionary, it's divided into various sections, alphabet, numbers, basics, days and times, friends and family, etc. There's a glossary in the back linking words to pages, making quick word look up an ease but I've noticed some words that I feel are basic are not included, such as morning. They have all day, all night, tonight, yesterday, day, the days of the week, but not morning. So when looking for some phrases such as good morning, you'll have to do a little improvising, such as good day, etc. But it can all be pieced together for the most part. Some signs got confusing (lack of description, some arrows on the signs weren't specific enough) and I had to refer to a YouTube video to see how it was signed. One thing I really like is the intro, it's short but packed full of confidence building suggestions and recommendations for learning and practicing ASL. So happy I went with this over a baby sign book! ... show more

  • Amazing book!
After searching for a while to find the best ASL learning book, I chose this one. And I'm glad I did. It has a very large vocabulary with clear signs and helpful tips. It teaches you about the order of words and facial expressions which are also vital to sign language. Highly reccomend! (Also has a VERY helpful index at the back to find words quicker!) ... show more

  • Medical Field: This Is For You!
This book is incredible! I'm a paramedic and needed assistance with communicating with the deaf community and this book helped like no other. If you need a "crash course" in ASL, this book is for you! Absolutely recommended for anyone in the medical field! I carry this book with me every night I go to work. :) ... show more

  • Great book!
I bought two copies, one to give to the KSU library (Kennesaw State University) and one for me so I can learn to better communicate with my nephew. This book's format with clear pictures and descriptions is a great help for someone learning ASL. Just a little nuance can change the meaning of the sign and this book points that out. • Great for beginners!
This is an honest non paid for non free item given review. I met someone from a dating website who was Deaf. And who is also a college ASL instructor. I wanted to learn ASL and started learning lessons from YouTube. But I also wanted a good book for beginners. I looked at many books on amazon and read many reviews on them but settled for this one. When I met my Deaf friend he was impressed with this book and said all of it was correct. The only difference with some of the signs was this book was more tailored for worldwide ASL and not specifically the American in American Sign Language. To me. I'd rather learn what is known world wide than just in the United States. Either way. If you get this book and sign with a Deaf individual who knows ASL, they will STILL know what you are saying/signing. Some may want to correct you. But like vocal language and meaning. Some words can have 5 different ways you can sign them. To me, who cares! If Deaf individuals know what you're meaning then what's the problem? I was learning ASL from several different YouTube teachers/lessons, an actual Deaf person, and this book. EVERY one was different! Or had different signs for some or many words. Some of the signs were similar and some were different looking. But they all meant the same thing/word. So if you're going to be learning from different sources anyways. This book is the perfect book to have for beginners. The main ASL laws in this book were all the same and what is "right" when my Deaf friend read through it. Like proper facial expressions with signs and using your dominant hand with most signs or explaining classifiers. No there is no DVD with this book but the pictures are VERY good and to me describe the motions and facial expressions very well. But even if there was a DVD with this book. It will still have different looking signs than any other book, YouTube or DVD lessons anyways. After what I have already learned of ASL. It it impossible to find/know the exact main signs for words or certain words that every single Deaf person in the world all uses. I guess ASL also has it's own slang or variations. Since I saw 5 different ways to sign "how". To me and a Deaf ASL instructor. This book is great!!! 5 Stars! ... show more

  • Book-it
This is a great book for beginners who want to learn ASL. Also, a good book to add to your library. The pictures and side notes are clear and easy to follow. The color pages are attractive and helps to make learning fun and interesting. Great book

  • An effective tool
This is probably one of the most valuable tools that I have purchased for learning ASL. The pictures are clear and the vocabulary that is included in this book will get you started in your learning process. The book is also very well organized. I am an absolute beginner and only know how to fingerspell. I have been able to pick up more signs easily with this book. ... show more

  • Great book
This is a great book. I love that it has full, color pictures. The spiral binding is definitely helpful for studying, however, where I found it was lacking, was in the description of each sign. For a 'complete beginner' book I would expect there to be word descriptions of each sign, not just arrows and pictures alone. Some of the signs are accompanied by descriptions for facial expressions and such, but not much beyond that. However, another compliment to the book is that it divided by category (food, medical, etc.), which is a huge plus! It's a great book, but I found that 1,000 Words to Sign by Geoffrey Poor was a much better choice for me (I purchased both books to compare). It is color pictured as well, it's alphabetized, and each word has a complete description with multiple pictures attached as necessary. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either book to begin signing, the latter book just worked better for my needs and learning style! ... show more
