Directions: It's better boil with soda. Recently I have seen a lot of customer feedback about red water problems. I went to do a tannin removal experiment, add soda and boil, boil for 15 minutes. Soak in hot water until the water is cool. Add new water and continue to boil, cycle 3-5 times. My experiment was repeated four times. Then continue to soak in water, change the water once a day, and remove tannins need for 4 days.

  • Make sure you process it properly for clear water
Size: Mopani driftwood (5-8 inch pack of 5)
Like everyone says, the tannins are of the charts. You obviously have to process it before you put it in your tank if you wanted clear water but it only takes like a week. 1. You have to rinse the wood 2. Boil it for 15 minutes. (The pot might get discolored but it's nothing that can't be scrubed off. You won't need to clean the pot till after you finish the boiling rounds but I'm giving you guys a heads up) 3. Drain 4. Boil 3-4 more times. 5. Set to boil but put half a cup of baking soda and quarter cup of salt. It will bubble/foam so just mix it from time to time. Rinse 6. Boil with regular water 1-2 more times to get rid of the salt/baking soda. Rinse. 7. Find a bucket, fill it with hot water from the tap( you don't need to boil anymore)and let the wood sit in it for about 8 hours with a towel over it. 8. I switched the water after I came home from work and before I left for work. So, twice a day. 9. You will see the water lighten up to a tea shade. After 2-4 days. 10. Rinse and put in your tank. 11. No more tannins. 12. Your tank will probably not be as hot as the water the wood was submerged in and heat makes tannins leak like crazy. So don't be too scared to put it in even if the water is tea colored. PS. If your water does go brown, which it shouldn't, it's nothing a bit of activated carbon or purigen can't fix. Don't be scared of the wood, I think it can sense fear. This is a bit of an aggressive approach and it's time consuming but if you want it processed quickly and effectively, this is one way to do it. Over took 4-5 days and my tank looks good. And it's not leaking tannins. I have a few photos that show what it looks like in different lighting settings. ... show more

  • Happy with my purchase
Size: Mopani driftwood (10-14 inch pack of 2)
Pros.... Solid, heavy, decent size. Cons.... I was expecting a little longer parts. Summary.. Didn't release crazy amount of tannins. Placed in the fish bucket.Added burning hot water and let it sit.Did the same thing 5 times every 20 minutes. The last time I let it sit for some hours. I let it dry then I place it in my aquarium. I do have carbon and purigen in my filter so maybe that help.I should have bought 3 pieces.Overall I highly recommend this. ... show more

  • nice pieces
Size: Mopani driftwood (2-5 inch pack of 10)
I got some nice pieces that won't to big for my 10 gallon tank just right to put my moss 3on for my shrimp tank you do need to either soak or weigh it down because it will float I was sitting up a new tank so I let it fall on it's own worked out good and really didn't change my water color within 48 hrs it was clear ... show more

  • Dye issue
Size: Mopani driftwood (10-14 inch pack of 2)
I like the shape of these driftwood pieces, but soon found they dyed all the light colored rock and shells in my aquarium. I guess it would have been better if I soaked them in the tub for a week or so, let them bleed off all the excess dye and also get water-logged so they wouldn't float. Aside from those two words to the wise, not bad for the price. ... show more

  • Beautiful driftwood- pros and cons
Size: Mopani driftwood (10-14 inch pack of 2)
Pros: -really is beautiful. No boring chunks of wood. -Each piece slightly greater the size stated slightly so you get an amount equal to or greater than you paid for. -pieces are chosen to complement each other. -Most pieces can be placed in a variety of positions (right side up, upside down on its side) versus some that can only go in one or 2 sides these are more versatile. -lots of branch or root extensions to create hiding places and underwater worlds -Way way way cheaper than any pet store. -ship fast and packed safe -dirt cleaned off before shipping. Arrived clean without excess bark or rotten wood Cons: -Need to be boiled 2 or 3 times. I actually soaked the wood in a bucket and changed the water a few times, boiled once, put back to soak in bucket a couple days. I boiled one more time and that was probably a little excessive (Some tannins are good for your tank.) -you need to wait to put them in unless you want to boil 3 times (completely boil and then soak in bucket in between boiling every few hours. -Can’t choose any of the pieces. -may need to cut wood to make the shape you want Overall great pieces at a great price. The seller really knows what they are doing. I would highly recommend. ... show more

  • High quality pieces
Size: Mopani driftwood (7-11 inch pack of 3)
Pieces were true to size if not slightly larger. The pieces I received were heavy and visually interesting and had no splintering that needed to be sanded. They leach tannins like crazy but that's a trait that is inherent to untreated Mopani. Patient prep work will be required if you want clear water. ... show more

  • Boil your heart out!
Size: Mopani driftwood (10-14 inch pack of 2)
So this is my first time ever have an aquarium, let alone driftwood. I bought these two pieces, and they are beautiful, even though they are a bit smaller than I anticipated. I saw everyone saying in the reviews and the product listing to boil the heck out of this wood, and I did just that. I boiled water and dumped it in a small cooler I had since I didn’t have a pot or pan big enough to use to boil water with the wood. I did this roughly once every day or two for a little over three weeks and the water I was dumping out after letting it sit was STILL brown. I finally just said to heck with it and put them in my tank. Water has not turned color at all since adding, but I also have a Seachem Purigen packet in my filter so, that might be helping . They sank just fine thankfully, so no issues with floating up or having to anchor them with something. I’m like 90% sure this wood was sprayed with some sort of coloring or treatment because it just felt really chalky upon arrival. But regardless, it is nice wood. Just don’t buy if you plan on using it quickly because this requires so much time and patience. ... show more
