  • Quiet
These are damn quiet. Put them into a MS Storage Space with three of them running in parity mode giving me 10.8TB of actual storage. The write rate is lower than I expected, but I am sure that this is due to the storage space setup. So far, these drives have been working rather well.

  • Data centers upgrade is my come ups.
Ordered 2 of these drives, before using them I checked the hard drive values using Medicat USB tools. Everything passed for health wise (sectors and blocks). Now I have bought brand new hard drives in the past and it died on my with in 6 months to a year and I did get a refurbished one as those were under warranty, none of the data was covered (same as if you were to buy one from many of the refurbished drives here). I have had hard drives that still was working before either I sold it or rid of it that was from Windows 7 days. I have friends that still rocking an old IDE drive. If you objectively look at the statistics of drive failures in their first few years it's not so bad and I look at it that the data center just broke it in for me. As long as it passed the disk health check and it's not a consumer drive, I'll bite. My only regret is that 6TB isn't enough for all of my Steam games. ... show more

  • 39k Hours... yikes
On the one hand... a high quality drive for super cheap... On the other hand... sold as "like new" but advanced analysis reveals it has 38,688 hours of Power On Time... which is... *extremely far* from "like new"... nearly 4.5 years of active spinning... yikes. I'm only using it for a periodic long-term backup of several other drives so I'm not bothered enough to return it, but buyers should beware if you expect a true "like new" drive to use in a constantly-spinning/always-on scenario. ... show more

  • Power On Hours excessive for "Like New"
I knew when purchasing that I would find over 10k power on hours, but 39719?! Thats nearing the end of its life! Like new my butt! Average lifetime is about 44k power on hours. We will see how this goes in the next 30 days, but this is ridiculous.

  • 24/7/365 for years w/o problem
I've used these disks and their predecessors (Re and Xe) from WD for over 10 years in high-end compute servers and in NAS, in both cases packed tight with several others (i.e., running rather warm, generally around 130F) and running 24/7/365. They do eventually fail, but none failed in the first 5 years and I have one that's been running 9 years... They are no longer made (replaced by WD Gold, itself replaced by WD Ultrastar DC), but I still have several running just fine. For anyone accustomed to SSD speed, these are really slow, of course, but in a RAID configuration they are plenty fast enough for streaming 4K with DTS sound (even in a RAID configuration intended for error-tolerance more than speed, such as RAID 5). ... show more
